TROUBLING—64% of all new cases worldwide last week were recorded in Europe, as well as 57% of all new #COVID19 deaths worldwide. Both exponentially rising. This bodes badly—it’s even before the busy upcoming holiday travel (read: worldwide wave). #MaskUp #ventilation #vaccinate
2) I believe the winter wave under #DeltaVariant or even #DeltaPlus could be even higher caseload than last winter. Hopefully deaths won’t exceed last winter but it could still be 50-66% as bad. Why? Because Delta is 2x more contagious & also more severe than last winter’s Alpha.
3) in terms of cases, no other region comes close currently. Same for deaths - the Americas with comparable population doesn’t even come close to half of Europe last week.

But I do worry if Africa would ever get hit hard & would the world report it? Or would the world not care?
4) Poland is now on pace to set new records for cases and deaths with no real mitigation in sight. HT @DrWilliamKu
5) And in UK, in 28 days alone, over 1 million new cases last month plus 4300+ deaths! UK is an island - so it can’t use the “it’s our neighbors” excuse. It’s a @BorisJohnson policy debacle - and @sajidjavid’s failure of leadership.

EUROPE. ALL. TIME. RECORD. HIGH.

Very little mitigation until recently. No major booster strategy or booster push until hospitals full. Completely opposite of Israel 🇮🇱 that has almost zero #COVID19 deaths now because they pushed boosters for all early.

HT @Antonio_Caramia Image
2) Don’t want overrun hospitals / surging deaths / lockdowns? Boosters ASAP. 👀
3) Europe is now the epicenter of COVID in the world. What a failure of leadership.

I don’t know whether to call this ‘racist’ or ‘very racist’.

Fact: I was born in China — I did not choose where I was born. I am an American 🇺🇸. And to the trolls—no, I didn’t “start COVID” either.
P.s. it is very racist. Also, please follow Dr @STOmarova - the woman in the above video.
3) Early pandemic, when Wuhan outbreak was surging, people called me a “CCP spy” or “communist misinfo / propagandist” when I tried to warn the world about the huge pandemic risk of the coronavirus. Trolls still do. salon.com/2020/03/27/a-t…

BOOSTERS CAN HELP AVOID LOCKDOWNS—that’s the clear conclusion from Israel. Israel🇮🇱 defeated #DeltaVariant wave without a lockdown by quickly giving 3rd shot for entire population—everyone age 12+!!! Europe hasn’t done that & now suffering dearly. #COVID19
haaretz.com/israel-news/bo… Image
2) Europe completely dropped the ball on boosters. It had time to enact it during early Delta wave before winter came. Now it’s almost too late for a burn through catastrophe
3) Israel 🇮🇱 acted fast and listened to its pro precautionary scientists. Other places did not and paying a heavy price.

BREAKING—207 GOP members of US Congress just voted to condone the **workplace death threat** to slash the neck of @AOC. That is the real tragic headline behind the 223-207 vote to censure Rep Gosar. Gosar would be fired if any other workplace.
This would not be acceptable in any other workplace. Police would even be involved.
3) Only 2 Republicans voted to censure Paul Gosar: Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger.

⚠️CAREFUL—Try not buy cars with leather interiors—much of the leather for cars comes from illegally deforested ranches in the Amazon rainforest. In the United States, much of the demand for Brazilian leather comes from automakers. nytimes.com/2021/11/17/cli…
2) A New York Times investigation into Brazil’s rapidly expanding slaughterhouse industry has identified loopholes in its monitoring systems that allow hides from cattle kept on illegally deforested Amazon land to flow undetected through 🇧🇷‘s tanneries and on to buyers worldwide.
3) more than 600 operate in an area of the Amazon known as Jaci-Paraná, a protected environmental reserve where deforestation is restricted. & illegal transactions are the linchpins of a complex global trade that links Amazon deforestation to appetite for luxurious leather seats

Worrisome—Several outbreaks of severe bird flu in Europe and Asia have been reported in recent days, in a sign the virus is spreading quickly again. Previous #birdflu outbreaks have led to culling tens of millions of birds. It can infect humans. 🧵
news.yahoo.com/norway-reports…
2) It is attracting the attention too of epidemiologists as the virus can be transmitted to humans. China has reported 21 human infections with the H5N6 subtype of avian influenza so far this year, more than in the whole of 2020.

3) South Korea reported an outbreak at a farm of around 770,000 poultry in Chungcheongbuk-do, the OIE said on Monday, citing a report from the South Korean authorities. All animals were slaughtered.
