First, the zoom meeting (pictured above) took place because of the visionaries @BhramarBioStat and Huixia Judy Wang, who conceived the idea of the COPSS Leadership Academy and brought it to fruition!

The purpose of this award is to "recognize early career statistical scientists who show evidence of and potential for leadership and who will help shape and strengthen the field".
Before #JSM2021, we were asked to record a 20 second video of the things we are trying to answer or things we hope to use this incredible platform for. See answers from people here:

During #JSM2021, I was *beyond* excited to see @jtleek named the winner of the COPSS Presdient's Award. Selfishly because he is a mentor & colleague of mine @jhubiostat, but mostly because of how big of an inspiration he is to our field as a whole 8/n
After #JSM2021, Judy & @BhramarBioStat kindly organized a meeting for us to talk w/ winners of the COPSS Presdient's Award (@jtleek) & COPSS Distinguished Achievement Award and Lectureship (Wing Hung Wong -- hugely influential in my fields of research) to share their wisdom

It was around this time that @BhramarBioStat kindly asked us how she could best support us.
Myself, @jeff_goldsmith and others suggested that one thing we felt would be really beneficial is more training in leadership from mentors and/or leaders in our field.

We were asked to nominate individuals and then Judy and and @BhramarBioStat said they would do their best to ask those individuals if they would come speak to us to share their insights and stories.
So much to unpack there, but I'll wrap up this 🧵 with some wise thoughts from @sallycmorton and @FDuBoisBowman this past Monday.
"What are important things to think about when starting out in a position where you are leading folks?"
@sallycmorton -- "be inclusive, offer clear communication and clear objectives (think strategic planning!), and process is just as important as the end goal"
14/n
"What are effective strategies to encourage (bio)stats depts to embrace change (e.g. curriculum, students, faculty hires, etc) in a more data-driven world?"
@FDuBoisBowman -- "Interview folks in industry, aggregate skills, and let that guide/motivate changes in curriculumn" 15/n
I'm so appreciative of this experience thus far, and assuming this thread is helpful to someone, I would like to keep it up by sharing insights that I have found helpful and useful.
Also, nominations for the 2022 COPSS awards are Dec 15!
First, I wrote a blogpost giving a few highlights about the Specialization, what someone will learn, and a bit about the instructors who built the series: @mirnas22@Shannon_E_Ellis@rdpeng and me! 👩🏫👨🏫
The first course, Introduction to the #Tidyverse, begins with what are "tidy" data, how this helps data organization, how non-tidy can be transformed to tidy data, the data science project life cycle, and an overview of the #tidyverse ecosystem!
@Bioconductor@naturemethods OSCA is a rich, reproducible, accessible (from beginners to experts!) resource with many #scRNAseq workflows & datasets. The resource is an online #bookdown book that compiles every night to track development by the open-source and open-development @Bioconductor#rstats community
