Quick thread about Pence's foreknowledge of the 1/6 Capitol riot.

Grassley walked back his claim within 30 minutes (see the Roll Call thread):

IMO this was a Freudian slip, and it was very telling.
IMO it shows that senior Rs who were & are loyal to T**** had a plan B if Pence decided not to carry out his role in the joint session that day. T**** would have preferred Grassley as the SPPT to take over that role.

IMO, Pence decided to ensure Biden's win was certified.
A lot of my fellow pro-democracy supporters seem to misunderstand exactly what Pence was planning.

He believed certain R Senators would file objections to the EC slate of electors from certain states, triggering a delay while those matters were looked into.

(continued)
That is a step that's within the power of a VP during that process.

T****, Eastman, Ellis & others had publicly said this could and should happen. My last day as a T**** supporter was 1/5/21. I had tweeted on 12/27/20:

(My timestamps are in NZT.)

Two things I got wrong in that 2020 tweet: I underestimated the threat level, and I said the prosecutions would be fake (ie, corruptly carried out) because I assumed the protestors would be innocent.

I'm way more skeptical now & never trust a promise of a "peaceful protest."
There was a lawful option to delay certification BUT that power rested with Senators, not the VP. His sole & necessary power to trigger a delay relied on at least one Sen objecting to a state's certification. Abundant House Rs objected but IIRC only one Sen did & it went nowhere.
IIRC, shortly after that Senator objected to Arizona's certification, law enforcement ordered those in the chamber to start evacuating. Pence had tried to stall the rec. his USSS detail gave to evacuate immediately, & by car. He overrode them & stayed in the parking garage.
One of many egs of Pence & his Dear Leader overriding the USSS, thereby increasing agents' stress & the risk of harm to multiple people.

They had urged JFK to use the hard top on the limo in Dallas, and it would've saved his life. Think of the legacy THEY have to live with.
Pence should have evacuated by car, when told to by his detail.

He claimed he wanted to stay so that continuing the joint session would look better. Honestly, him coming back by car wouldn't have looked bad to anyone.

I now think he stayed in case the coup attempt succeeded.
Pence had foreknowledge of the riot plans, and just like T**** and any other unscrupulous politician did and would, he maintained the facade, while keeping his own options open at all times.

He claims he restored order asap. He did not.
Since those weeks before 1/6 when my skepticism of T**** and his henchmen steadily rose, I've been able to figure out what really happened by looking at what those like Pence who had the power to save lives did NOT do at key points.

IMO, the answers are right there.
But it's not as if prosecutors can only rely on omissions rather than actions.

There is a mountain of solid evidence from thousands of official agencies, documents, videos, and witnesses of every kind.

Rs are TOTALLY screwed.

Thread: Margaret Atwood's comments on the rising threat of American Theocracy

We who are now #XGOP and #NeverTrump have a relatively unique take on issues like these. I feel I can add value to the debate, having spent years on the left and the right, and now being indy.
I had already seen the movie of The Handmaid's Tale when I saw resistors appearing in costume at political events.

I thought it was ridiculous and self-defeating for them, and maybe it was, at that time. In 2020 resistors ended up having the last word, thankfully. #YoureFired
As you know, there's still people who think even the recent absurdities expressed by TFG (& his henchmen like Bannon, Flynn, & Meadows) are no big deal & that he's adequately trustworthy, patriotic, & a true defender of the US Constitution.

Such people view me as a traitor.

Thread: Ethan Crumbley's parents

Everyone should read the details of what they did & said when there was a chance to prevent the mass murder.

thedailybeast.com/ethan-crumbley…
I also believe the school administrators erred in allowing him back to class that day.

Telling the parents to get him into counselling within 48 hours was a criminally inadequate response.

There are so many things they should have done instead.
And since day one I've asked myself why this high school didn't have metal detectors. I know that other schools do.

Public alarm at the number of school shootings this year is justified, but let's remember that many schools have effective prevention policies. Others should too!

Thread: T****'s and Meadows' reckless behavior toward others when T**** contracted Covid in late September 2020.

OMG I so want to use a .gif of the duly elected 46th POTUS saying this:

theguardian.com/us-news/video/…
Those of us who live in reality are not surprised to hear of the shenanigans in the T**** White House in late Sept and early Oct 2020.

What does surprise me is the stupidity of Mark Meadows. What an absolute eejit he is to voluntarily provide shenanigan details in his book.
Meadows revealed his own reckless misconduct and corruption as the WH Chief of Staff during that time. And nothing in his book is going to win the support of anyone who is already #NeverTrump (ie most of the country.) T****ers are gonna despise him, too. What a moron.

Fauci is absolutely right, as usual. Omicron (and/or future variants) can *potentially* cause a new wave regardless of season, but they might not. We will have to wait and see.

I'm grateful for (qualified, decent) Covid scientists around the world. If interested, read on...
I've already seen the far right fascist maga talking points that Omicron was somehow deliberately "released" in order to distract from political issues in the US.

>Eyeroll

I hate to break it to them but at the moment Covid began this was all set in train, naturally.
This pandemic is a natural disaster. Even if Covid was somehow manmade, it still would have evolved into variants, which is an ongoing natural process.

Working together so that poorer countries can vaccinate their people would hamper this natural process of mutating variants.

Been listening to this excellent song "All You Fascists." Here's a thread about a term in the lyrics:

"The people in this world are GETTING ORGANIZED."

The trade union movement's MO has traditionally focused on the concept of organization. It's closely tied to democracy.
The thread I linked above at the start of this one has more context about my current views on American democracy and why I left the T**** cult after the sore loser refused to accept the result of the 2020 Presidential election. (He somehow accepts all the other results, lol.)
Read the song lyrics here.

"Words and Music by Woody Guthrie, Derivative by Billy Bragg."

I was a Billy Bragg fan in the 1980s and kinda rediscovered him in the late 2000s. He's unapologetically left wing in his music.

Thread: Current #WaukeshaAttack death toll rises from 5 to 6.

The first 5 victims were all adults, the 6th is a child. I think seated, elderly spectators couldn't get away fast like others could.

My thoughts below on possible motives:

apnews.com/article/milwau…
The far right extremist GQP side are pushing a racist narrative bc the defendant is Black. They falsely accuse opponents of playing down this attack bc the defendant is not white.

As one of their opponents, I'm not playing it down one bit. As usual for me, regardless of race.
The attacks in Waukesha, WI and Parkland, FL have some things in common (and other things not in common!)

Both defendants might have been stopped if authorities were more "tough on crime."

Both defendants have known political views.

Both are obviously severely mentally ill.
