BREAKING—42%⬆️—Pandemic profiteering @Walmart just increased the price of 2 rapid #COVID test kits from $14 to $19.88… by 42%! Meanwhile rapid tests are either free or $1.20 each in Europe. Or if its @AbbottNews, can’t they lower damn price?! Asking for the 🌎 in pain.
2) And @cvspharmacy & @Walgreens are worse — they are charging $23.99 for a 2-pack. Shameful considering rapid tests are just $1.20 — if you even pay anything in Europe. @AbbottNews is also complicit in this price gouging racket.
3) Wondering also@why the price of rapid tests are so damn high? Read this👇

It mentions the name Tim Stanzel— remember it. He may be an FDA employee now—but he also famously worked for Abbott & Quidel… even founding one of Quidel’s science divisions.
propublica.org/article/heres-…
4) Walmart’s minimum wage of $12/hour can’t even buy a damn 2-test package! A Walmart minimum wage worker would have to work 2 hours to afford one! cnbc.com/amp/2021/09/02…
5) For those arguing higher prices due to demand — I’ve studied health economics for years— the danger in healthcare is that for any life-saving product—it’s vulnerable to price gouging because most people WOULD PAY AND ARM & LEG - anything - to save the life of a loved one…
6) thus, this allows pharma to charge over $100,000 for a cancer drug therapy and charge $1000/vial for insulin — because both products = life and death if you can’t get it! HEALTHCARE isn’t like a new gadget or jewelry one can skip if pricey— healthcare is a *NEED* not a WANT.
7) Big pharma price gouging is obscene. It’s been ~100 yrs since it was invented, patent donated for $1, and yet it’s price gouged for $1000/vial to people who absolutely can’t afford it. And many in Congress are blocking reform in BBB to reduce this (cough, GOP & Manchin, cough)
8) Corporate greed in a nutshell—

“Big pharma fairytale is R&D justifies astronomical prices, but the pharma reality is that you spent most of your company’s money making money for yourself”

Congresswoman @katieporteroc slams @abbvie CEO Richard Gonzalez
9) Given limited rapid tests available, we need to be extra careful with the swabbing — ➡️ please swab both throat (mouth) and nose, not just nose alone. Swabbing both finds 15% more cases than nose alone says one study 👇

📌Words can’t express how glad that Elizabeth Holmes of Theranos has been found guilty of fraud x4.

➡️My friends remember when I once confronted Holmes at Harvard @Xfund & called her a **fraud**’on stage to her face in early 2015. Justice at last!👇nytimes.com/live/2022/01/0…
2) I have this moment saved in my photo albums to pull out for just this moment… the Harvard event was for a “2015 Experiment Medalist” award— it was held in the auditorium of Harvard’s education school. I remember it like it was yesterday—cuz her bullshit oozed from every pore!
3) someone once said, “the arc of the moral universe is long, but it does bend towards justice”… I am a true believer in that very much today….

UK hospitals 🏥 seeing critical staff shortages + caseload. 📌Maybe whoever arrogantly pushed the “#Omicron is mild” / “no need to worry” should be fired. 📌Maybe whoever naively believed the “it’s mild” propaganda should reconsider how they were so dangerously duped.
2) Same situation in US hospitals — both overloaded and critically short of staff due to both infections and burnout. 👇 this will be repeated worldwide if we don’t stop #Omicron and wake up!
3) I don’t know who can still call this “mild” with a straight face when staring at 2x record pediatric hospitalizations.

⚠️Totally “mild”—US pediatric #COVID19 hospitalizations nearly 2x last year’s all-time high. Kids shouldn’t be hospitalized—kids shouldn’t be getting #LongCovid. Kids have their whole lives ahead of them. Let’s protect the kids. 🙏

HT @DrWilliamKuHealthData.gov
2) What a sad way for kids to spend Xmas vacation—moreover these infected kids will go back to school next week and infect more kids - tragic. ➡️ The worst pediatric COVID hospitalization state isn’t Florida — #1 is Texas.

Figure by @DrWilliamKu
3) Florida is just behind Texas in pediatric COVID hospitalizations— Florida may soon overtake its summer #DeltaVariant peak at this rate.

Why you should #SwabYourThroat…. Negative via nose… Positive via the throat. #Omicron is very different from all other variants. We need to adapt to changing testing strategies.

P.s. This story made my day! 👇
2) here was my tweet 🧵 yesterday morning that led @tweetmommybop to try out the throat swab rapid test after her husband has negative nasal results. RAT tests of Omicron are being compared using nasal tests vs Delta. I think they need to do throat swabs too with #Omicron
3) The throat swab positive while nasal swab negative testing story is becoming quite common. Here is another person with 3 negative nasal tests but got an immediate positive when she switched to a throat swab. 👇 #Omicron is different - we must adapt.

⚠️NOT MILDER FOR LONG COVID: “#LongCovid can happen no matter what virus variant. There's no evidence that there's any difference between delta or beta or now omicron” ~Fauci.

“10-30+ % of people will go on to have persistence of symptoms”—of billions 👀

2) #omicron is a potentially really dangerous Trojan horse for lulling folks into complacency but ultimately hitting them hard with #LongCovid!!! That’s the exact worry many epidemiologists and scientists have… a very sinking feeling 👇
3) But but but “it’s mild”… how would you like to live life with almost no smell or taste? That’s #LongCovid neurological damage. 👇

Let this irony sink in—CDC advises folks to all wear N95 to protect against wildfire smoke aerosols, yet @CDCgov still doesn’t recommend everyone to wear N95’s to protect against coronavirus aerosols of super infectious #Omicron?

➡️@CDCDirector needs to advise N95 for all now!
2) Someone else discovered the non sequitur inconsistency… the @CDCgov can’t say N95 is supply chain blocked (it’s not anymore) or blame fit anymore
3) CDC needs to revamp its credibility. But it has a big hole to dig out of after @CDCDirector’s horrible policies this past week to lift isolation early without testing— unscientific in every way. See thread 🧵 below 👇
