Here's something you'll almost NEVER hear from the "product launch" crowd 👇🏿

This formula is one of the best ways to measure your CONNECTION to customers:

([upsell amount] - [refund amount]) / [total number of customers] = connection
Higher numbers mean a greater connection to your audience (and it hints at the affinity they have for your business, products, and practices).

UNEXPECTED:

I focused on reducing refunds in 2021, and I ended up making way more upsells as a result.
• 2019 refunds: 6.7%
• 2020 refunds: 4.83%
• 2021 refunds: 1.55% (with the highest sales volume of these 3 years)

I'm clearly achieving greater alignment with my customers 🔥
Why won't you hear this from the product launch crowd?

Because high refund rates are their dirty secret.

"Yeah, but who cares if we had $800k in refunds on $2M in sales? We still made $1.2M."

With rates that high, your payment processor will CERTAINLY make your life difficult.
Not only that, but most big launches have lots of affiliate tie-ins on the back end.

(Because this is how you coordinate messaging across lots of personalities and media.)

Once you factor in this cost + employee costs, that $1.2M starts looking pretty thin.
Also, launch culture is unsustainable.

99.9% of you will ALWAYS be better off focusing on marathons over sprints.

ESPECIALLY if you're the type who hates having their time compromised by having to put out fires.

From 2008–2010, hanging out on Twitter felt like spending 24/7 at a tech conference where everyone who was anyone was in attendance.

By 2015, Twitter morphed into the crossroads of culture and politics—but energetically, it still felt like the place to be.
For me, this remained true through most of 2021.

But recently, something shifted—something SIGNIFICANT.

For the first time in at least a decade, the energy of growth and change is NOT concentrated on a social media platform.
The new energy is DECENTRALIZED across GitHub, Discord, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, crypto exchanges, and NFT trading platforms.

And while this is certainly aligned with the growth of blockchain technology, it’s (notably) not a result of it.

The process of MINTING things to the blockchain has resulted in a new CONSIDERATION LANDSCAPE.

Due to the FRICTION and COST of minting, we now want to make damn sure we’re dealing with something *actually* worth minting.
A random blog post?

Probably NOT blockchain material.

But a contract that requires action from both sides?

Absolutely.

What else should be minted?

Property deeds, licenses, registrations, research papers…
I’ve mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating here:

I’d like to see a special blockchain for journalistic outfits where publishing requires a nominal gas fee, but issuing a CORRECTION to an existing article requires an extremely onerous fee—perhaps even destroyed tokens!

🧠 THOUGHT OF THE DAY 🧠

MOST of the transactions that COULD take place do not actually occur because they fall beneath the MINIMUM TRANSACTION THRESHOLD (MTT).

The MTT is an artifact of the need to involve a “trusted third party” in all transactions.
Because of this MTT, it’s literally impossible to establish a TRUE, completely efficient pay-as-you-go plan for ANY GOOD OR SERVICE!

As a result, some segment of the market pays too much for goods/services they don’t use, and another segment pays too little for what they DO use.
This transactional efficiency problem affects everyone, and from my perspective, the most significant effects are psychological.

If you’ve ever looked at various payment models and thought, “This doesn’t quite fit,” you’re right! Thanks to the MTT, a perfect match is impossible.

For these corporations, CENTRALIZATION is the path to the two things they want most:

• More PROFIT
• More CONTROL

But since there’s no free lunch, we must also examine the TRADE-OFFS corporations accept with their myopic push for centralization.

🚨 Want to fight back against Big Tech? 🚨

First, you must understand Big Tech’s primary source of power—CENTRALIZATION.

Here’s an example of how this works:

With Twitter, you use their app to post content to the site…

And that’s where your ownership/control ENDS.
At this point, what happens with your content is entirely up to Twitter:

• Do your tweets show up in your followers’ timelines?

• If you get banned, you LOSE your content!

• What if you want to reference old content to re-publish on a different platform?
Obviously, if you get banned, you lose access to Twitter. More specifically, you lose your audience, which is significant blow…

But IMO, that’s not the worst part!

No—losing your content and being unable to reference it or publish it elsewhere is an absolute DEATH BLOW ☠️

At least 98% of people who purchase #WordPress Themes make the following mistake:

Their purchase is *completely* predicated on acquiring a Theme that gives them the “look” they think they want.

They don’t consider what matters to visitors AT ALL.
What do visitors want?

• Speed — pages must load FAST on every device

• Clarity — no scrolling required to get to the point (no hero images, no ads, no BS)

• Ease of Use — great typography, clear + adequate spacing, and NO CLUTTER

• Simplicity — less is more!
But what do most prospective website owners want?

An aesthetic they deem worthy of how they see themselves.

A little bit of visual pizzazz. Some “oomph.”

Now ask yourself:

What does any of that have to do with the website *actually working* for visitors?
