Can confirm dashboard report in our NE Ohio county @bhrenton@jeremyfaust. For as long as I live I’ll never forget my gen surg call/rounds this weekend. We’ve all become somewhat numb to our #COVID19 reality over the past few years but this new situation is pure dystopian - a 🧵
As I join the surgical resident for rounds I notice a sparsely populated nursing station/floor with strange faces. Most nurses have left or are currently sick. Military personnel in full combat fatigues roam the halls changing waste bins, assisting in patient transport - 2/7
I see a familiar face in one patient room, an anesthesia (CRNA) colleague retooled to the floor since all non-emergent surgeries have been cancelled for weeks - she fiddles with a stoma appliance and laughs nervously - 3/7
Some patients in rooms are clearly rattled that their attention from nursing/techs is waning throughout their stay. They understand the dire situation our region is in but that is obviously little comfort to an individual convalescing through a scary diagnosis - 4/7
A visitor curses at me under her breath when I ask that she put her mask on as she’s coughing in the room. She makes sure to let me know she thinks this Rona thing is overblown and complains about wait times for tests/food trays - 5/7
I field a constant barrage of pages from surrounding urgent care centers/hospitals trying to transfer in urgent non-COVID related surgical emergencies & it’s 14 hours + to get them a bed (if we can at all) with diagnoses that typically need surgery within 2 hours - 6/7
The reality is that the majority of patients bringing our system to its knees are #unvaccinated patients & the #OmicronVariant is throwing a tsunami of volume at us the likes of which we’ve never seen. It’s surreal as I drive back to the 🏥 past packed bars #GetVaccinatedNow

Today I had my second run-in with a man claiming “a real man doesn’t wear a mask”. Last time it was “real men don’t live in fear, *homophobic slur*”. I have many thoughts about this type of reluctance to #WearAMask & how it’s contributing to the spiraling #COVID crisis (THREAD)
2/6 Now, first of all, I think the disgusting slur was related to the awesome blue floral design mask a friend made that looks great with a blue gingham shirt, AMIRIGHT @RepWeinstein? But I digress...
3/6 This type of macho male ego (pronounced #ToxicMasculinity) aversion to wearing masks is as pervasive as it is perplexing to me. If they aren’t explicitly barking this approach into people’s faces in anti-mask defiance then they have it written all over their face/posture.
