1) For the longest time, Montreal remained the epicenter of the #COVID19 pandemic in Quebec. But in a disturbing new development, the Indigenous-populated Far North of the province is now reporting the highest number of cases per capita.
2) In this thread, I will examine this new trend — one that probably deserves more attention by public health authorities. The Health Ministry chart below shows Nunavik and Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James now recording the highest #COVID incidence of any region in Quebec.
3) Perhaps this could be a perverse artifact reflecting much lower #COVID screening in the rest of the province. But the chart below prepared by the Cree community reveals a particularly low adult vaccination rate of 45% in Mistissini.
4) Meanwhile, alert levels are at their highest for all 14 Inuit communities of Nunavik, as the chart below shows. Given that health services in Nunavik and Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James are much scarcer than the rest of Quebec, this current contagion needs to be addressed fast.
5) According to Nunatsiaq News, eight people in Nunavik have died with #COVID19, with three of those deaths being declared in the sparsely populated region since Jan. 13. The fact that they died with COVID likely reflects underlying health problems.
6) Bertie Wapachee, head of the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay, told the CBC two weeks ago that #Omicron has hit the Cree Nation of Quebec particularly hard. “It stunned us…The way it spread was like no other [wave], this one was very different."
7) Wapachee added that COVID infections among health workers have caused low staffing in his region, which has just one hospital in the community of Chisasibi. Severely infected Crees requiring hospitalization must be sent far distances to Val-d'Or or Montreal.
8) The rapidly spreading contagion in the Far North of Quebec underscores how the #coronavirus can sneak up anywhere in the province, often in areas historically overlooked by authorities. It also illustrates how we are all in this together. End of thread.

1) On Nov. 30, 2012, François Legault, as leader of the then-fledgling Coalition Avenir Québec, pronounced that he was “shocked” when he read a report by the province’s auditor-general on the poor quality of air in elementary schools back then. What has he done since about this?
2) Back in the fall of 2012, Legault was not in power. The Parti Québécois was, and the Liberals formed the official opposition. Still, Legault issued a news release in which he deplored the state of the province’s schools. See the press release below. Image
3) The auditor-general’s report to which Legault alluded was 50 pages long. The report mentions the word “ventilation” 48 times in those 50 pages. The report itself referred to other studies going back to the year 2000 calling for improved school ventilation. See below. Image

1) COVID deaths are again rising in the U.S. as mass vaccination of booster shots has stalled. In contrast, Quebec’s #pandemic wave of deaths is beginning to subside following a ramp-up in boosters in the adult population. In this thread, I will delve into these latest trends.
2) According to the latest analysis by the Institut national de santé publique, Quebec’s seven-day average of #COVID deaths per million population has decreased to 7 from 8.4 a week ago. By comparison, the rate in the U.S. climbed by 1.2 to 6.8 during the same period. See below. Image
3) The resurgence in #pandemic mortality in the United States follows a plateauing of booster shots administered there in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the chart below shows a steady increase in boosters given in Canada to counter the #Omicron variant. Image

1) Quebec’s new chief public health officer stunned the scientific world Thursday when he seemed to shrug off the precautionary principle and dismissed installing air purifiers in schools during the #pandemic. What key knowledge does Dr. Luc Boileau possess on this subject?
2) "We don’t have to deploy this equipment, which has not been shown in a school context to be a factor of improvement (in dealing) with COVID in particular,” Boileau said at a news conference. “There’s no demonstration on the scientific side.”
3) In this thread, I will draw your attention to what just a few other jurisdictions and scientific bodies have had to say about air purifiers in schools, each one applying the precautionary principle during the worst respiratory #pandemic since the 1918 Spanish Flu.

1) For the longest time, Israel was held as the model around the world on how to launch a #COVID19 vaccination campaign effectively. But that campaign appears to be stalling and hospitalizations there are now rising. In this thread, I'll compare Israel with Quebec's approach.
2) Compared with many other jurisdictions — Quebec included — Israel was the first out of the gate to conduct mass vaccination in the #pandemic. It has also proceeded with a 4th dose for those over the age of 60, while many countries are still struggling to administer 3rd doses.
3) Yet the percentage of Israelis who are considered adequately vaccinated has plunged in the last few months. Today, it's in Cuba where most people are adequately vaccinated. Israel is now in 23rd place and Canada has surpassed Israel to place in 17th spot. See the chart below.

1) Although Quebec continues to lead the country in the number of #COVD19 deaths per million population, other provinces are now beginning to catch up, underscoring the gravity of this terrible fifth wave. In this thread, I will discuss what this means for Canada and Quebec.
2) First, though, I would like to recognize a sombre milestone crossed: Quebec on Wednesday declared a total of 13,009 COVID deaths — by far, the highest of any province. The chart below shows how the current wave of #pandemic deaths has surpassed last January’s.
3) But as I noted in my last thread — confirmed by reporting by the Canadian Press — the wave of #COVID deaths in Quebec has exposed a new fatal blind spot in the government’s handling of the #pandemic: the tardy 3rd dose vaccination of elderly shut-ins.

1) It is now universally acknowledged that Quebec authorities maintained a big blind spot during the #pandemic's first wave: the province’s long-term care residences. In this thread, I will focus on what appears to be a new fatal blind spot: the personal homes of the elderly.
2) First though — on the day Quebec Premier François Legault asserted that the province was emerging from the #pandemic's tunnel of darkness — the Health Ministry declared another 85 #COVID deaths. The latest mortality wave may be bigger than last January’s. Please see below.
3) Since January 1st, a total of 1,212 Quebecers have died from and with #COVID19. Most who have passed away were in their 80s and 90s and had been living at home — not in long-term care (CHSLDs). Why are they the ones dying now, and could their deaths have been prevented?
