“In Judaism abortion is permitted and where the pregnant persons life is at stake, it’s required because the health and well-being of the pregnant person comes first.” @TheRaDR@NCJW#samanthabee
“The majority of Catholics - 56 percent - think abortion should be legal in all or most cases and 68 percent of Catholics do not believe Roe should be struck down.” @jamielmanson@Catholic4Choice#SamanthaBee
“What I realize more and more is that fragile men project their fragility onto God and their God is male and does not believe in women’s equality.” @jamielmanson@Catholic4Choice#SamanthaBee
“Religion has been used to justify atrocities and to maintain power for centuries. Now it is being used to hold and maintain and entrench existing power structures.” @TheRaDR@NCJW#SamanthaBee
“The country is supposed to be a country for atheists, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, for every kind of Christian, for every kind of Jew, so the question of when the soul enters the body should not be relevant & they certainly should not be behind how a law is written.” @TheRaDR
🧵 Welcoming the stranger — the immigrant, the refugee, the asylum-seeker — is one of Judaism's most core values. The Torah commands us no fewer than 36 times to care for those whose homeland, language, social network, and resources may be elsewhere.
We hear this more than any other commandment in our most sacred of texts, perhaps because it’s all too tempting, when things are going well for us, to forget. So the Torah has to remind us, again and again, until we remember.
There is no easy solution to what is happening in Afghanistan. But our history, our tradition, our humanity calls us to act. Here are four ways you can help:
Amy Coney Barrett is about to be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. There was nothing about this process that was normal. We can’t act like it was. THREAD
The World Zionist Congress, which has the power to allocate a billion dollars in money annually in Israel, has been ablaze with major issues around voice & power this week. Here’s a thread summing up the drama & implications between the progressive and right wing voting blocks.
TL;DR: Right wing groups banded together and have the majority numbers so they decided to propose to change the rules and make it so that progressive groups can’t vote on certain leadership positions or influence particular money. #wzc2020
That billion dollars impacts every aspect of Israeli society & global Jewish life, whether you are talking about gender equity, LGBTQ equality, the occupation, religious pluralism, or economic justice. The decisions here will impact women and families in the short and long term.
I’m a fan of @Daroff, too. But quoting only men and referring to William as the King of Twitter and Malcolm as King of the Jews, without even acknowledging gender as one of the primary issues for @Conf_of_Pres to navigate is not okay. @OmriNahmiasm.jpost.com/Diaspora/Who-i…
Just as a reminder, when Michael Steinhardt sexually harassed me he continuously referred to himself as the King of Israel. Kings are not the model of leadership we should be aspiring towards. They are often known for abusing power and abusing women.
There are plenty of qualified women to comment on world events and Jewish leadership. @OmriNahmias, if you had asked us you would have learned that gender dynamics are a top issue that @Conf_of_Pres must deal with under @Daroff. And I’m eager to be a partner to him in that work.
On my way to my 1st ever @Conf_of_Pres meeting, which is focused on Anti-Semitism. COP brings together leaders of major Jewish orgs as a way to leverage impact in the US & Israel. What messages do you want me to share w/ this group? What issues do you wish we were addressing?
11/13 morning speakers are men, including all “experts”. I know plenty of experts on antisemitism who are women and will plan to share that with COP.
In the meantime, would love to see the men from the experts panel commit to only speaking on future panels that include women. @IrwinCotler@JGreenblattADL@DavidHarrisAJC, what do you say?
