What are we to make of Boris Johnson's continuing support, both from most Tory MPs & the wider right-wing, given his relentless denial of reality, & almost daily demonstrable lies?

Why are @Conservatives more susceptible to believing lies?

slate.com/technology/201…
The Left aren't immune to believing lies, but the evidence seems conclusive: people on the Right are more prone to believing lies than people on the Left.

Why?

It may be that conservatives & liberals seem to hold different beliefs about what constitutes “truth.”
Finding facts, pursuing evidence & trusting science is basic liberal ideology. For many (especially US) conservatives, faith & intuition appear as equally valid sources of truth. Fairness & kindness come lower on the list of moral priorities for conservatives than for liberals.
Conservatives show a stronger preference for higher status groups, are more accepting of inequality & injustice, & are less empathic (at least towards those outside their immediate family).

Baptist minister & former Republican congressman J.C. Watts put it succinctly:
Campaigning for Sen. Rand Paul in Iowa in 2015 he observed:

“The difference between Republicans and Democrats is that Republicans believe people are fundamentally bad, while Democrats see people as fundamentally good.”
Conservatives are also less introspective, less attentive to their inner feelings, & less likely to override their “gut” reactions & engage in further reflection to find a correct answer.
As a result, conservatives may be more likely to rely on error-prone cognitive shortcuts, less aware of their own unconscious biases, and less likely to respond to factual corrections to previously held beliefs.
In both the UK & USA, conservatives come disproportionately from rural areas & small towns, where social networks remain smaller, but denser & more homogeneous than in the big cities where left-leaning liberals dominate.
As a result, it may well be the case that the opinions of family, friends, & community may be more potent in conservative areas than in the more anonymous big cities, where people tend to mix with a wider range of people & opinions, & where Left-leaning people tend to dominate.
The lack of shared reality between left & right in America today - & increasingly in Britain too - has no doubt contributed greatly to our current dangerously high levels of political polarization. This plays out daily in the news media, which politically, appear to be ossifying.
Despite occasional left forays into reality denial, conservatives are far more likely to accept #misinformation & outright lies.

Deliberate campaigns of misinformation & conservative preferences for information that fits pre-existing ideology provide only a partial explanation.
Faulty reasoning & judgment, rooted in the interactions between modes of reasoning & judgment shared by all with the specific personality patterns found disproportionately among conservatives, may also play a central role.

Dozens of mainly young #killthebill protesters have been charged by the Police & CPS, which appears to be the biggest use of riot charges against demonstrators since the 80s, giving the impression of “revenge policing” & giving in to political influences.

theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/f…
The all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on democracy and the constitution also heard that the police’s use of force, including deploying dogs, batons, and shield strikes, known as “blading”, was often considered disproportionate in the days that followed.
At least 62 protesters reported injuries over the course of the week, including 22 with head wounds & seven who required hospital treatment.

38 protesters charged with riot could face jail terms of up to 10 years. Only 22 people have been convicted of riot since 2011.

Starmer thinks the ONLY route to power is via the high-risk strategy of distancing @UKLabour from the #socialist policies of explicitly supporting nationalisation, unions, & wealth redistribution, opposing antidemocratic laws, & ending #NHS privatisation & insecure low-paid jobs. ImageImage
Imho, Starmer would get more support, respect & increase his electoral chances of success if he just repeatedly stated the obvious simple truths about the Tories in exactly the same way John Smith was unafraid to do.
People are hungry for change. My fear is that come the next election, the right-wing media machinery will crush Starmer, & pull back the curtain to reveal that @UKLabour would offer little real change. Given the multiple crises we face, 'less bad than the Tories' is not enough.

Quick #THREAD on Canadian-American economist, diplomat, public official, & public intellectual, John Kenneth Galbraith, who died in 2006.

His books on economic topics were bestsellers from the 1950s through the 2000s. As an economist, he leaned toward post-Keynesian economics. Image
Galbraith was a Harvard University professor of economics for half a century, writing four dozen books, including several novels, and published more than a thousand articles and essays on various subjects.
Among his works was a trilogy on economics, American Capitalism (1952), The Affluent Society (1958), & The New Industrial State (1967).

Neoliberal/libertarian economists Milton Friedman & Thomas Sowell couldn't stand him.

"As indispensable to confronting, say, your domineering mother-in-law or your local city council as it is to helping foment an ongoing & ever-escalating insurrection against, say, a sexist, racist, nepotistic power-mad oligarchy threatening to destroy democracy as we know it..."

Nadya's spontaneous, explosive approach to political action has involved jumping over barbed wire, kissing police officers, giving guerilla performances in crowded subway cars, and going on a hunger strike to protest the abuse of prisoners.

Here's Lucy amplifying the doctored far-right video of Keir Starmer.

Britain First's Paul Golding said to anyone 'harassing' JRM: “We will find out where you live. We will find out where you work. We will find out where you study & we will come down on you like a ton of bricks.” Image
Allan was one of three Tory MPs who shared the doctored video: Nadine Dorries deleted the Tweet without explanation; Maria Caulfield deleted her entire account; Lucy Allan deleted it but chose not to apologise & to double-down on the general point while not naming Starmer again. Image
Instead of apologising like any sane person would for sharing a doctored video from a far-right account, she said: "There was a total failure by the authorities to understand #cse #grooming, a dismissive attitude towards victims, & a belief that victims brought it on themselves."
