At Parliament. Someone on a megaphone claims that Parliament is fitted with audiosonic weapons designed to make people feel sick.
A police speaker came on to make an announcement and everyone started booing. Then chants of "you serve us".
Am at the parliament forecourt. There is an antivaxx truck, which drove up and pushed a little through the police line. A small group of people ran to it. The police pulled the driver and passenger out of the truck and arrested them (I'm assuming).
The police notice keeps going, telling people that parliament is closed and that if people go onto the forecourt they'd be arrested. People keep booing.
At the speakers truck now and they're trying to get people to come together for the speeches. But it's a bit chaotic. The guy on the microphone just claimed there's 2 million people here. Definitely not.
Okay, there are two stages, one in front of parliament house and one in front of old parliament house. A real division. Chaotic.
Someone has just started talking in front of old parliament house (Mac). He's talking next to police officers. He said that when he started organising protests he got a knock on the door from the police who said they needed to investigate.
He said, there's a bunch of paedophile up on that house. You need to investigate them.
He starts chants of "sack them all". He says: "Pick up your shields, pick up your swords, and dont give these cowards another inch."
Someone new on the stage now. He says he used to be a constable of police. Screams out the name of all the fed and state leaders and says "thank you for uniting all of Australia."
This guy talks about how the police protect paedophiles in parliament instead of people.
He says the best thing about this is the unity is has created in Australia, particularly amongst us white people and the sovereign aboriginal people of this country. Says we are currently facing bigotry in australia. Aboriginal people have been facing this for over 200 years.
UN Globalist Elite. The Great Reset. Drink!
The speaker says "When they want to bring in the Great Reset, we say no." Everyone starts charting "we say no!"
Now talking about the constitution. Asked if this is actually being enforced or not? If ScoMo truly us leading a commonwealth then he needs to mobilise the AFP and arrest every treasonous premier. Everyone cheers. If he doesn't then he is a globalist puppet.
Says what we are doing here is everything it means to be Australian. We are showing the world not just that we are Australian but that we are Australia.
I missed a speaker. Then there was a priest who spoke about how this was a spiritual battle. Not much enthusiasm.
A few new speakers up. Including John Farris (?), the drummer for INXS. He's now leading chants of "we the people, we are sovereign".
That was basically all he did. He now introduces Adam Gibson from Parents with Questions.
Protecting children is one of the biggest themes of this protest. Lots of signs about kids.
He says that there are millions of kids who are under risk from the jab.
He says this group needs to have conversations with other parents with respect and love to stop them giving their kid the jab.
He says they shouldn't be an angry mob but loving warriors of peace. The house is full of fear and coercion and anger and "we are better than that". Big cheers for that.
The response to this however is still a lot more muted than the calls to arrest the state premiers.
There are lots of police here.
Now Dr Dan Hanson, an ex dentist. Said he gave in his registration because he won't work for a corrupt coercive system.
He claims there's at least 1/2 million people here (there isn't).
Claimed he received instructions that said doctors and medical practitioners are not allowed to talk negatively about the vaccine campaign. Lots of boos.
Now talking about Ivermectim being banned. Says he talked to Dr Peter McCullough. Lots of cheers. This guys said the vaccine is apparently causing more harm than good (not evidence of this btw).
Says he's starting a group to being back ethics into the medical system. Says lots of doctors want to speak up, but can't. Ends by saying "let's end this shit".
New speaker (Dr Peter Johnson). He says that this is the biggest battle in history, one that was forecast thousands of years ago. It is a battle between light and dark.
I'll give them this. The MC is ensuring the speeches are short and snappy. I wish the left was better at that. #ConvoyToCanberra
Now nurse Cathy Burn, saying she's representing nurses and allied health professionals. A lot of medical speakers here. This lot of speakers are really focused on mandates and vaccines, much less on Global Reset and paedophiles.
She starts big chants of "Australia is United".
She's talking about freedom being human rights. "When tyrrany becomes law, resistance is a duty".
The MC says "who's been the biggest virus over the past two years? It's been the media. When those camps are built we can fill them with journalists". #ConvoyToCanberra
Sorry, my tweets are a bit scattergun. Trying to grab what is interesting. I may slow down soon as my battery is getting low.
George Soros! Drink!
Okay, we're back to how mainstream media and the government are controlled by The Globalists.
Speaker says mainstream media spread dangerous conspiracy theories. Like "covid vaccines are safe, effective and necessary"
COVID is also a conspiracy according to this speaker. Not a single COVID death has been verified he says (this is good conspiracy stuff).
My phone almost dying, so stopped tweeting, but have written notes. About to head home, will put up some more thoughts when home.
Back home. I took some other notes on speakers, but won't bore you with it. When I left at 1 they were talking about reconvening at 2 for more speeches, so not sure if it still going on or not. But when I left there was big stream of folks walking away too. #ConvoyToCanberra
A few thoughts.
Despite all the hype, to me this basically felt like every other protest I'd ever been too, with two major exceptions - a lot more Australian flags, and a lot more conspiracy speaking at the microphone. #ConvoyToCanberra
I do of course recognise that I may be lucky in that way as I didn't feel like I was sticking out too much in that crowd. So I felt safe the entire time. #ConvoyToCanberra
The other thing was that I was interested as to whether they'd be any violence or tension. In the time I was there I didn't really feel any of that. At no point was I really nervous things would boil over (this may change). #ConvoyToCanberra
Where there was clear tension was between the groups. There were literally two different stages, with different speakers talking at the same time. The split seemed to be between the anti vaxx groups and the sovereign citizen folks. It made everything feel very chaotic.
In saying that, I listened to speeches at both stages and the rhetoric was basically the same. They all had ppl speaking about the globalist conspiracy and how the GG should step in and sack the Government. That often got the biggest cheers. #ConvoyToCanberra
But the vaxx mandates and vaccines for children were the most obvious targets of the protest. This is what most of the signs were about and most of the speakers. They chanted "freedom" but it was all about vaccines. #ConvoyToCanberra
I think that is interesting as this may have been the biggest anti vaxx protest Australia has ever seen. I'm always hesitant to talk about how big these movements are, but I can't see this sentiment going away soon. And it is going to have an impact on health debates for a while
But that split between the movements will be something to watch. That tension is obviously also not going away. It's incredible they couldn't put it aside for today. It will certainly influence the direction is goes in the future. #ConvoyToCanberra
Anyway, those are thoughts for the moment. Below are some photos I took. #ConvoyToCanberra
The anti police messaging here is on point. But he was in the minority. The speakers were very pro-police, just believing they're being directed incorrectly. #ConvoyToCanberra
It is really clear that having a sense of community and belonging was central to so many involved in the #ConvoyToCanberra. #auspol
It's not surprising, but it is interesting, and can tell us a lot about what happened/will continue to happen. 1/24
In my PhD I am studying online manosphere groups as an example of an "intimate public".
Intimate publics are groups who bond over a shared world-view and "emotional knowledge". Connection is not just about ideology, but also a joint feeling about their position in the world. 2/
Notably therefore, intimate publics aren't just about politics, but also about the mundane. The difference between a social movement where people come together solely about a political goal, and a social movement where people are also seeking deep connection through that goal. 3/
We often think about conspiracy theories as being the purview of the far-right (i.e. QAnon). COVID-19 however has shown that elements of the left can be just as good at it.
Here are a bunch of receipts from Aus, and some thoughts on implications of this. Thread. #covid19aus
Conspiracy theories succeed through tapping into, often healthy, distrust of institutions, and turning that toward a belief in a shadowy plot of elites working against the general populace.
These plots are always impossible to disprove, making response really difficult. In fact a lack of evidence is often spoken about as evidence of the plot itself, as it suggests a mass cover up by those undertaking the conspiracy.
Incoming: long thread about the #melbourneprotests. TLDR: the institutional left are massively failing in the response, and in doing so I really worry are going to push even more people to the far-right. #tradiesprotest#covid19aus
Before I begin, a note about what I mean by the institutional left, because I always get in trouble about this. I’m specifically referring to those in powerful mainstream orgs – the ALP, elements of the Greens, unions, left-wing think tanks and some progressive NGOs.
There’s been a lot of debate about the Melbourne protests, and whether they are all from the far-right. There was a mix – tradies with genuine issues and right-wing grifters who latched on. At times those two are the same, with an influence of the right in construction industry.
It's not just that this is unromantic, it's that it fundamentally misunderstands sexual relationships. Relationships are not transactions in which one person (a man) asks an other party (a woman) for sex, who then, reluctantly, agrees.
Relationships are spaces of mutual desire, lust, communication and ongoing negotiation.
Consent should be thought about in the same way. It is not a transaction. It's a mutual process requiring ongoing communication and sometimes even negotiation.
This proposal (and the responses to it) are a perfect example of the serious challenges we face in the regulation/moderation of discourse on the web. Thread. 1/15 #Twitter#Birdwatch#SocialMedia
It is clear that Twitter has, rightfully, concluded that they want to remove themselves somewhat from the process of moderation. They, alongside other companies, have faced significant backlash over their approaches and are searching for ways to outsource the process. 2/15
This controversy is well deserved, and we should be very skeptical of these companies having complete control over these decisions. Twitter's main priority is profit and they make decisions primarily to appease advertisers. 3/15
One thing to note is that this research is about relatively low-profile bans on Reddit. The ban of Donald Trump is much more serious and is leading to literally hundreds of thousands of people moving to platforms like Gab. It moves these platforms away from the fringes.
While not every Trump fan will move to Gab or Parler (if it comes back online), many many will. His reach overall will decrease, but those people who do move will encounter more extreme places.
