Harsh-ji -

This matter has to be investigated from three dimensions.
1. Shruti 2. Smriti and then 3. The Community Ground Reality.

Shruti being a First Principles, there are less chances of lineage-by-birth being explicitly referred. Not to the best of my knowledge.

+
However, that is less of a Problem. Smritis are fundamentally expositions of Purushartha for all communities through Karma and Achara based on Vedic Principles. There we have ground realities are deal with, structures, organisations, aspects, views, features are designed.

+
By birth Varna-Jati-Kula seems to be the most efficient organization for us to realise the Vedic world view of Srishti-Sthiti-Laya and be in line with Rta. Purushartha, the equality proposition of Bharateeya Parampara, is easily designed for a Kula-Jati, through various Karma.

+
Like in the past, we may have discussed, Varna may be more of a ‘View’, ‘Aspect’, ‘Feature’ and less of a structural or organisational reality. Yet, by birth it is most easily acquired. As an aside, I have explained this in my paper.

+

indica.today/research/varna…
Also true that in the last 150 years two things have happened.

1. This perspective of life partially collapsed leading to a lot of problematic realities. Our ancestors knew how to avoid/overcome some problems created by birth-based- inheritance. We have a problem after 19C.

+
2. Also True - Industrial Revolution has taken the Profession out of the Community/Grihasthashrama.

Hence, we need an updated world view that helps us realign our Purushartha striving Karma across Individuality, Family, Community, Professional Institution & Public Life.

+
More importantly, it is also true that all Hindu communities have not been identified with the same Varna throughout. Some communities have even stayed outside of being identified with any Varna - they have remained within The Hindu fold of Bharateeya Parampara.

+
Not just that. Inter Kati-Varna marriages have been there since time immemorial and our various textual sources give enough instances of that too. Manu Smriti itself talks about communities as a consequence of Varna Sankara.

Yet, two things have remained intact throughout.

+
A. The Unit of Movement has always been a Kula-Jati. KJs/Families have gradually changed their identity. Very less of a movement for the individual by self.

B. The perspective of Purushartha striving Karma is easily applied to the context of a Community.

+
Its also true that Kula-Jati-Varna are instruments of striving for Purushartha through Karma and align yourselves with Sthiti and Rta. Hence, KJV are secondary realities and not primary, in the strictest sense of Principles.

+
However, Our Families, our Extended Families, our interactions with various people shape us as an Ecosystem - which all of us know - & this is a combination of what we are as an individual and what we have inherited through our ancestors in the form of Family Ecosystem.

+
We know how to design the Purushartha Karma/Experiences for the above reality.

If we want a completely Avarna situation or a self-chosen Varna situation, then we will have to do the following.

+
1. Draw the Universe with a perspective of Srishti-Sthiti-Laya
2. Define the Trajectory of the Individual within that in alignment with Sthiti & Rta.
3. Then define the Kula-Jati-Varna in alignment.
4. Then define the Purushartha striving Karma in alignment with Dharma.

+
Now, this is a gigantic task as you can see. With due respects to Shri. Savarkar, who I admire significantly, with whom there are many things that I agree with, he has not ventured into crafting this world as that will remain the domain of a Sage.

+
I fundamentally believe that we need a Purushartha perspective that recognises the Modern reality of the Individual operating in multiple worlds of Family, Community, Professional Institutions & Public Spaces. I also believe that there has to be a H World outside of the Jati.

+
But we lack enough clarity to shape these things yet. Although great Freedom Fighters of Bharatavarsha, like Veer Savarkar, have argued correctly for the need of that new world, I dont think we have even taken a step towards being able to do that because ...

+
the Purushartha striving Karma design is easy for a static Community of Individuals and very very difficult, if not impossible, where the Individual is choosing, apart from the complexity of inheritance realities.

The pitiable situation of journalism today is that they are not worried about a girl being done to drashti because of refusing to convert or the murder of a boy who was leading a Saraswatee Pooja progression.
They are not even bothered about religious institutions misusing young girls for religio political purposes. They are not even bothered that they are supporting something that came as subjugating women as part of the religion.
Their ideological crisis is such that they don't even know whether they are supporting religious hegemony or religious choice or religious essentiality.

But all they want to do is to pick a stray incident blow out of proportion. Anything that demeans Jai Sriram is an opportunity

A story narrated by Shri. Dharampal in his Collected Works come to my mind, in this hour of complexity.

Once Dharampal-ji was going in a train. He met a group of Yatris who were on a major tour. They had been to Rameshwaram and then were on the way to Haridwar via Delhi.

+
Out of Curiosity Shri. Dharampal asked “All of you must belong to the same Jati”. But they said “No”.

A puzzled Dharampal, like us, asked them. “How are you then sitting next to each other, sharing food and eating together”.

Our perspective of Caste System - you see!

+
What followed changed Dhampal-ji’s life. “Shrimaan, in a Yatra, there is no Jati” said those Villagers.

They belonged to various Jati. But, for the purpose of a Yatra, they could set aside their Jati customs, rules - acquire another set of customs and return back once done.

#Constitution #Smriti #Dharmashastra

A lot of discussion about Constitution and Smriti in the last two days.

Obviously, it is a Category Mistake to compare the two, technically.

Yet, I am sympathetic of people indulging in this comparison. This thread is to explain why.

+
Let us begin by understanding the difference between the two. That will also help us to understand why the Confusion.

1. Smriti-s are an elucidation of the Purushartha perspective. It is a Dharma-Artha-Kama-Moksha enterprise. For the individual, the community and the State.

+
The Constitution is merely the Philosophy of the Modern State & a Book of Law based on that. Minimally a philosophy, maximally Law and adequately an institutional framework for the two.

It is an administrative Contract between the State & the Society, rather the individual.

Namaste Modi-ji:

Dhanyavad for yet another beautiful “Ganatantra Divas”. The Bharateeya Parampara was flowing from all of its past, through the present into its natural future.

This is to request you for a "National Heroes" Monument.

#RepublicDay @narendramodi @PMOIndia
#SriAurobindo, the most important original thinker of 20th Century, was obliterated from our National Consciousness & relegated to a corner in Pondicherry for 70 years.

I sincerely thank you for bringing him back into the centre stage through the Republic Day Tableau.

+
Of course, it is now the responsibility of all of us to ensure that his personality, contribution, thought seeps into the society. Youngsters need to know him at an early age.

Thank you, also, for the National Committee to celebrate his 150 years Birth Anniversary.

#Thread - There is this point that troubles all of us. Why did Modern #Technology not happen in India, in spite of the fact that we did have a fairly advanced Science and Tech until 14th Century.

Is our way of life opposed to the kind of Technology we produce today?

+
Extending further, this results in “Is Dharma against Modern Technology, or even Technology itself? Is there a Conflict?”.

If not, what is the kind of Technology that Dharma anchors and enables.

+
This question cannot be answered directly. We need to take a step back & approach this by asking other Questions.

1. What is the Dharmic perspective of Life?
2. What is our perspective of Human nature?
3. Where does Dharma place Technology as a consequence?

Criticism is a necessary evil in public discourse. It has an evil component to it which we must not forget. Hence, it is necessary to conduct our criticism in such a manner that it results in +ve outcomes and, at the least, not in -ve outcomes.

It must have 10 attributes.

+
1. It must be “ApyayamAna”.

It must be articulated as though a parent is prevailing upon an erring child. The intention must be evident to compensate for the bitterness of Danda.

The tenor must compensate for the difficulty of the substance that one cannot see.

+
2. It must be built for “Longevity”.

The situation may be overcome, the context may get erased in time, but our criticism will stay in some form. The criticism must be relevant in some form whenever it is accessed much later in time. Else, it will stay as a negative example.
