We are all brilliant in identifying issues and creating audits; I truly believe as SEOs we are able to take a website to the next level. But, how can we get our recommendations implemented? A 🧵 by @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
One of the crucial parts of getting things implemented is knowing who holds the keys to the website. Often this is not marketing, but closer to the product/development team! Which means relationships outside the marketing team will have to be created. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Throughout my experience I have seen many marketing teams struggle with this step; as it can be hard to effectively communicate with development teams. This is no one's fault, because the roles are different. There are ways we as SEOs can help with this. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Respect workflows
Familiarise yourself with the workflow of development teams and their projects. Seamless integration into these workflows will go a long way as it helps the project team and causes the least amount of friction. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Raise requirements & change requests
Help the teams by communicating your change requests (CR) and requirements in the way the development teams do. Familiarise yourself with the project management tool (such as JIRA) and write clear tickets. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Clear tickets
Be to the point, don't write paragraphs (nobody reads them). 1 line summary of what is needed, steps to reproduce, expected outcome, example and acceptance criteria. No need to be overly polite, you are communicating a change request. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Be patient
Devs and other teams often don't fully know what you want to achieve -especially with newer or more complex concepts. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Be responsive
Dev teams often have tight deadlines and releases. If there are questions or comments, you will do well to prioritise them so you don't become a blocker. As soon as you are a blocker, the relationship suffers as you make them look bad. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Be inclusive
Results are often shared with marketing teams - we should share with development teams more often! This shows the impact they make, and makes them look good within the company. This goes a long way to establish the relationship even further. @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
This works for the majority of the development and project teams I have worked with. Both when I was in-house, agency-side... Both with internal teams and external teams. By extending yourself into their world, implementation will improve! @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
Extending your relationship building beyond marketing teams has several benefits; it gets stuff done as well as creating bridges between the marketing teams and their developers. Ultimately the website and marketing campaigns are the winners! @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
As an SEOer, how have you found working with development teams? We are looking forward to your tips and experiences! @Kevin_Ellen_#SEOthread
