Canada has taken first place in the 2021 Best Countries Report, an analytical study conducted by U.S. News & World Report. This is the first time Canada has claimed the top spot in the yearly ranking, having spent several years in the second and third positions. 1/3
Highlighted in the 2021 report is that Canada ranked first in sub-rankings, including quality of life and social purpose, meaning that it is seen as “a stable and safe society in which individuals [and business] can develop and prosper, and is open, fair and equitable.” 2/3
The 2021 report evaluated 79 nations worldwide using 76 different attributes and considers how countries are perceived, economics, military presence, quality of life and quality of education. 3/3 Canada takes 1st place in #2021BestCountriesReportinvestontario.ca/spotlights/can…
Two new attributes were added to 2021's evaluation. Perceived agility carries the most weight in this year’s evaluation, as the strongest factor for per capita GDP variations & highlighting the importance of a nation’s perception as adaptable, progressive and responsive.
According to the report, Canada is globally perceived as one of the most socially just nations, placing a high value on racial and gender equality, human rights and racial and ethnic diversity.
1/2 The brains of conservatives & liberals are wired differently. Interacting with others in a diverse society like ours is mentally challenging & cognitively draining for conservatives. They're black & white thinkers so interacting with people they don't identify with makes them
2/2 fearful & anxious, particularly about taxes. #Rightwingers negate the value of other Canadians: stop being poor, stop being disabled, stop being elderly, stop being non-white, stop being non-Christian, stop being non-cisgender, stop needing housing, etc. Just stop being.
1/2 Canada has a very long way to go to address many wrongs, reconcile and make adjustments on many levels but we are on our way. As leaders in a world where #democracy is under attack by #farrightextremists, we have a responsibility to focus on never giving up on being
2/2 an inclusive and progressive democracy ie. "a social or political movement that aims to represent the interests of ordinary people through political change and the support of government actions".
1/3 International research shows a strong relationship between happiness/well-being/life satisfaction and rising real incomes. Yes, there are other influences on life satisfaction other dimensions of the good society cont'd
2/3 but as that great modern philosopher Kanye West put it succinctly, “Having money isn’t everything. Not having it is.”

1/2 I know that old paper records like #residentialschoolrecords require controlled environments to be prevented from degrading and that creating and maintaining such environments is extremely expensive. The Vatican has such records.
2/2 Digitizing copies of the Canadian #residentialschoolrecords and placing them in the hands of the appropriate First Nations would provide access to their own historical records for research purposes.

#yycbeltline 🧵I'd like to bring forward another POV on policing. I'm experienced in protesting & I don't support counter-protesting. If there were no counter-protestors there would be no potential for violence. The police would not have to separate 2 groups to prevent violence.
If you aren't counter-protesting on the street you can put city council, mayor & police on the hot seat. Where is the permit to protest? What conditions does it state? If there is no permit or conditions then why is that? How & when will the council & police act to restore peace?
Don't counter-protest on the streets. The city council & mayor, MLAs and Police Chief aren't being pressured to ensure Beltline residents have peaceful quiet enjoyment of their homes, streets & neighbourhood. Make them act, phone, email, write & don't give up.
Recent research shows some individuals have strong desires to incite chaos when they perceive themselves to be marginalized by society. These individuals tend to see chaos as a way to invert the power structure and gain social status in the process. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/abs/10.109…
#FreedomConvoy2022 featured white supremacists & neo-Nazis mobilized under the guise of more popular grievances in order to further their agendas. Aside from overthrowing our duly elected gov't what were/are their agendas? What was gained by #illegaloccupations and #blockades?
🧵What is #rightwingextremism? A loose movement, characterized by a racially, ethnically and sexually defined nationalism. ... often framed in terms of white power, grounded in xenophobic exclusionary understandings of perceived threats posed by such groups as people of colour,
Jews, immigrants, the LGBTQ community and feminists.
Here are the 7 things you need to know: 1. COVID-19 had a significant impact on right-wing extremist activity in 2020. 2. Canadian right-wing extremists appear to be heavily influenced by US activity.
3. Right-wing extremist discussion of Canadian politics focused on Justin Trudeau and the New Democratic Party (NDP). 4. Right-wing extremists in Canada are drivers of disinformation.
