Meeting is starting with Cynthia Moore explaining the rules and opening ceremonies, explaining the agenda. Moore is making it clear that no other motions or resolutions are allowed.
Moore introducing Ashley Stevenson to sing the national anthem.
Which she does.
“In all thy sons command” btw…
Jimmy Littlejohn is now welcoming the UCP to the O’Chiese First Nations and doing an opening prayer.
Worth noting, that the auditorium appears to be filled?
For a non-event that no-one was allowed to attend, this is more than a little weird…
Moore back and thanking the membership for attending the virtual SGM.
And there are now almost 60,000 votes being mailed out.
Wowzers.
Gotta stop the NDP Moore says, but upward mobility and fiscally conservative.
Doubles down on the policy platform and emphasized the promise made, promise kept nature of the platform.
Moore - Running through the list of UCP accomplishments, oil and gas and there’s the balanced budget shout out!
Moore - regarding COVID, the UCP crushed it! The NDP would have made “the Australian style lockdowns look like Childs play”.
Moore - Moving on to bad actors within the party. They need to behave and do better. Don’t split the right ya’ll.
Moore - “We wanted to do this in person, the overwhelming turnout forced us to move to mail in ballots because of security concerns and too many people”.
Moore - Watch your mailboxes. Thanks for the feedback. We’re listening and are doing what we can to make the process is fair and not flawed. Nothing could be further from the truth.
“When you cast your ballot, think about what is best for the party and Alberta."
Prefaced by “We don’t want to do anything to pave the way for the NDP”.
Aaaaaand there’s a video!
With a Kenney VoiceOver and the inspiring UCP “theme”? Anthem?
Moore introduces Kenney!
Boatloads of people holding up “Vote Yes” and “keep Alberta United” signs.
Guess we know what it took to get in in person…?
Kenney - Welcome everyone! We’re at a First Nations hotel, because indigenous people were the first entrepreneurs!
No land acknowledgment tho…
Kenney - Invokes Vimy Ridge. Ties in Oil and gas. We’re getting the greatest hits here folks…
Kenney - Indigenous people loved bitumen too guys, they used it on canoes (which is true)…
Kenney - Alberta exceptionalism! We are Alberta Strong™️ and Alberta is back!
Kenney - We’re going to win a second majority! But first, lets go down memory lane…
Starts with Ralph Klein and the “twinkle in his eye”…
Kenney - Conservatives kicked Ralph to the curb and Conservatives decided. Do we really want to go down that road again? Do we really want to turn Alberta into a socialist lab experiment.
Kenney obliquely invokes GSA and says the NDP believed “parents can’t be trusted”.
Some can’t Jason. That’s just a tragic reality.
Kenney - I can back to stop the NDP and save Alberta.
Kenney is really hammering home the idea that this vote isn’t about him, it’s about beating the NDP.
Kenney - I worked so heard to stea… earn the leadership of the UCP.
Or something.
Kenney - We got elected the hard way. But instead of running against the NDP, we presented a positive campaign and didn’t fight against them.
Um.
Wot?
Kenney - I don’t want to just be in government, I want to fundamentally change government. I’m not just a conservative, I’m a movement conservative. Faith Family and Free Enterprise ya’ll.
Kenney - We did everything we said we would. We’ve fought back the socialist menace. The turn off the taps legislation forced BC to back down.
Um again, wot?
Kenney is now doing a play by play of his first week in office.
Takes a victory lap on the Carbon Tax.
It’s now a full on greatest hits reel.
Kenney - We restored workplace democracy!
We reversed the NDP’s attack on parental choice in education and saved faith based education from the NDP!
Kenney - We shredded the NDP’s curriculum and developed a balanced carefully thought out curriculum.
And there’s the critical race theory condemnation!
Wow.
Kenney just pivoted from the curriculum to reconciliation with First Nations.
Gonna needs some robe for all the whiplash…
Kenney - We led Canada in mental health and addictions strategy!
(By shutting down SCS and as we saw this week, pulling the plug on life saving programs at the last minute)
Haven’t heard him take a victory lap on the war room yet, but he’s moving through his list pretty fast.
Kenney - And then global economy collapse, oil prices collapse and COVID.
We were the hardest hit province in Canada, and the rest of the world had freezer trailers.
Kenney - Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. COVID divided us. The NDP exploited that. They should have gotten in line. Notley wanted hard Australian style lockdowns for two years.
Kenney - Someone has suggested Notley should have been looped in the decision process…
Cries of “shame” from the room.
Kenney says it makes as much sense as putting him in charge of pumping gas. Room loves it.
Kenney - We didn’t do those things because we wanted well being.
Some folks wanted us to only focus on Freedom and Personal responsibility. We couldn’t do that. Sings the praises of the US health care system…?
Kenney - Freedom is a central value, but so is a moral obligation to care for the poor and the sick.
Last September we thought we were good, but we were wrong and we almost blew up our capacity.
Kenney - I had to choose between freedom and a lot of people dying. I made the best of bad choices avoiding the two extremes.
Kenney almost apologizes, but instead “expresses regret”.
Kenney - COVID isn’t over, but we’re back to normal for reals now. We’re gonna revamp healthcare btw.
Kenney - We have two choices as a party. One path is of division, the other is unity. If you don’t all get in line and drop the COVID arguments, the NDP are totes gonna win.
Kenney - The other path is unity, where we overlook all of the mistakes and differences and focus on the bright new day of the future.
(The room of very clearly Kenney supporters only stands at that one)
Kenney - Back to the greatest hits and Alberta has it’s mojo back!
Kenney - Some people say that it was energy prices that balanced the budget. Nope it was totes us, we did it!
Kenney - Our economic recovery strategy is saving Alberta. We met more than any other legislature in Canada because we are committed to rebuilding the policy foundation of a new Alberta.
Kenney - We’re building internet too!
Kenney - We’re attracting new investments in O&G. We’re doubling down on natural gas. We’re making sure there will be blue collar jobs.
Also yeah, we’re doing some green energy too.
Kenney - The only green diversification the NDP did was tax people to fund windmills.
Kenney - “I forgot to mention oil and gas”.
Really?
Cause the last 40 minutes or so say otherwise…
Kenney - Plus Putin is bad. We have to displace Putin and OPEC’s oil. It’s a moral obligation!
Kenney - We’re going to build a major Canada US pipeline if you keep me in! This time I mean it! We will do it!
Kenney seems to really be loving the phrase “We never downed tools”.
Someone was visiting a work site. Not pumping gas tho…
Kenney - We need to unite and get the work done. I know about winning elections, I’ve never lost won.
Kenney - Why did conservatives divide around Ralph? Things got too good. Things are getting good again. Plus Trudeau is the worst Prime Minister for Alberta ever. But we can’t let us divide again. The Socialist menace will win again and we’ll never come back.
Kenney - Don’t compare me to the almighty, but to the alternative.
Actual quote.
Kenney - I ask for your support. But look at what we’ve done and how we’re moving the province forward. Credible polls say that we would win a majority right now, and we’ve got 14 months to build momentum.
Kenney - Ralph won a larger majority his second time around, we can do the same thing!
Jobs! Economy! Pipelines!
Kenney - Whatever the result, I will fully respect it. If there’s a leadership race, I’ll step aside. If I win this though, every member of our caucus and our team needs to get in line and support me.
Kenney - There’s 3 things I’ve learned. First, it’s a lot harder to build than destroy. Socialists want to tear things down.
It’s harder to unite than divide.
It’s harder to lead through wisdom than criticize from the sidelines.
Kenney - Prosperity! Strong and Free! God bless you and God bless Alberta!
And with the UCP anthem back, that’s all folks!
(Sorry for all the typos in this thread BTW, Kenney speaks fast and autocorrect really seems to take issue with a lot of his verbiage…)
