Alongside women's rights in the twenty-first century is the development of the men's rights movement, parts of which have culminated into the contemporary #manosphere, in the UK associated with Laurence Fox's Reclaim Party Deputy Leader, Martin Daubney.

Consisting of online communities that ascribe to misogynistic ideologies, which objectify, disparage, & dehumanise women, the #manosphere also houses those who identify as involuntary celibate #incel. Last year, 'The Incel Rebellion' was published, examining this disturbing turn. Image
Drawing on ethnographic research & interviews, the book provides an original & timely insight into the development of the #manosphere, & into how & why men join & self-identify as #incel. But as this article reveals, how people write about them matters.

The 'Incel Rebellion' book also explores the extent to which the influence & philosophy of #incel & the #incelsphere draws on & is penetrating mainstream culture & political discourse, & its harmful impact.

This research into the #manosphere is from 2019 - the first known qualitative study focusing on 'The Red Pill', an online forum wherein heterosexual men attempt to improve their seduction skills by discussing evolutionary psychology & economic theories.

…rnals-sagepub-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.11…
'The Red Pill' explicitly integrates neoliberal & scientific discourses into its seduction strategies, superficially resolving a contradiction between hegemonic masculinity’s prescriptive emotional walls & a desire for connection by constructing women as exchangeable commodities.
This 2021 research article focuses on the fact that men’s victimisation is a central topic in online discussions, particularly in the #manosphere, where its emphasis is often combined with a strong anti-feminist stance.

…rnals-sagepub-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.11…
This 2021 research examines the link between extremism‐motivated violence and extremist groups through a case study of misogynist #incels, a primarily online community of men who lament their lack of sexual success with women.

…rnals-sagepub-com.hallam.idm.oclc.org/doi/full/10.11…
To learn how misogynist #incels talk about mass violence committed by members of their group, researchers analysed comments relating to the 2018 Toronto van attack, in which a self‐declared incel drove a van into pedestrians, killing 10 people.

bbc.co.uk/news/uk-562690…
The research demonstrated overwhelming support among self‐proclaimed incels for the attack & violence more generally. Incels viewed mass violence as instrumental, serving the following four main purposes:
1 garnering increased attention

2 exacting revenge

3 reinforcing masculinity

4 generating political change.

The findings indicated the need to examine misogynist #incels as a potential terrorist group & male supremacism as a basis for terrorism.
The man who gunned down seven people in 2021, killing five, in a rampage in Plymouth is being lionised by an online #incel community, with some ironically venerating him as a “saint” & celebrating the attack as an aid to their recruitment drive.

This #THREAD *speculates* that online propaganda, UK politicians, & sometimes mainstream news media might play a role in radicalising BOTH violent misogynists AND far-right terrorists.

Family members of those killed by a gunman in Plymouth have urged the government to take action on #incel culture in new online safety laws. Jake Davison, who had discussed the incel movement on social media, killed his mother & four others in August 2021.

Hitler, Trump, May, Orban & Johnson have all demonised vulnerable minorities to win power.

On the 10th anniversary of the #HostileEnvironment, Home Office staff have warned of a “culture of fear” where they may be asked to act illegally.

#NeverForget

theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/m…
#HostileEnvironment policies have changed the fabric of society. No other policy in living memory has left such a malign mark, a stain like an oil slick. It's racist, xenophobic, immoral, illegal, unfair, punishing, divisive, mean-spirited, discriminatory & counterproductive.”
Shami Chakrabarti, a former shadow attorney general, said: “Ten years of the hostile environment have been a disaster for race relations, community cohesion and national pride. Using starvation and destitution as a means of control led directly to the #Windrush scandal.”

Analysis of Berlusconi's & Trump's racist & misogynist insults & 'impoliteness' rhetoric, for which they never apologise, involve violations of the traditional moral order that are part of a far-right populist agenda of 'shameless normalisation'.

journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.11…
Linguist Ruth Wodak’s (2021) definition of 'shameless normalisation' explicitly refers to ‘impolite or shameless behaviour’:

"The far-right populists’ agendas (and related rhetoric) are reaching or have already reached the political mainstream." Image
"We are confronted with widespread & growing normalisation of far-right policies, of formerly tabooed topics, wordings & impolite or shameless behaviour (i.e. ‘bad manners’). The boundaries of the ‘sayable’ are being shifted, & (now) ‘anything goes’." ImageImageImage

A new research report from colleagues at Sheffield Hallam University shows that for the bits of Britain most in need of “levelling up”, full employment is simply a myth.

#CostOfLivingCrisis

shura.shu.ac.uk/30252/1/real-l…
The report - the sixth in a series that has been published every five years since 1997 - reveals the real level of unemployment in Britain by adding in the hidden unemployed – people who are on incapacity benefits but who would be working in a truly full employment economy.
The real unemployment total is around 2.34 million – a million higher than the Govt claims.

Official measures fail to adjust for distortions arising from the operation of the benefits system - how very large numbers of incapacity-related claimants hide substantial unemployment.

When the Trojan Horse story broke in 2014 it did so on a narrative wave characterized by terrifying headlines of a ‘plot to Islamicise British schools’. But it was a based on a fake letter, & reveals a complete failure of government & journalism.

transformingsociety.co.uk/2022/05/19/the…
In January 2022, The New York Times released an investigative podcast about the Trojan Horse scandal which characterized it as an "Islamophobic hoax" and compared it to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a historical antisemitic hoax.

nytimes.com/interactive/20…
The Trojan Horse Affair, sparked by a fake letter, had massive long term, national implications. The controversy led to the development of a new phase in the Prevent agenda & the affair & the letter were used by Govt to back the implementation of a Counter Extremism Strategy.
