The IHR Emergency Committee for multi-country #monkeypox outbreak advised the WHO DG that the event, currently, does not constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). @DrTedros accepted the Committee’s advice.
The IHR Emergency Committee unanimously acknowledged the emergency nature of the event & that controlling the further spread of #monkeypox outbreak requires intense response efforts. bit.ly/3niOHUM
The Committee provided advice based on scientific evidence presented by WHO & several countries, & discussions on:
🔹 latest epidemiological trends
🔹 contact tracing activities
🔹 impact of large gatherings
🔹 access to vaccines & medicines
🔹 risk of stigma for groups at risk
More data on the #monkeypox outbreak is needed to better assess public health risk, including on:
🔸 transmission
🔸 clinical presentation
🔸 virus evolution
🔸 vaccine availability & efficacy bit.ly/3niOHUM
The Emergency Committee noted that WHO alerted countries about the #monkeypox outbreak early on through official communications. Convening an EC signaled an escalation of the level of alert to countries and a call for intensified public health actions.
The Committee recognized that the response to this outbreak must serve as a catalyst to address #monkeypox everywhere, including in several countries in Africa where it has been neglected for years despite calls for more attention.
WHO DG @DrTedros may decide to reconvene the Emergency Committee for the multi-country #monkeypox outbreak as the situation evolves and if immediate reevaluation of the event is required.

Abuse of older people (60 years and older) can take various forms: physical, sexual, psychological, or financial. Abandonment and neglect, indignity and disrespect are all forms of abuse.
Abuse of older people can happen anywhere. It occurs in homes, in long-term care facilities, even online. Many internet scams are targeted towards scamming older people. People who commit it are often in a position of trust.
Following the 2 previously published WHO interim guidance on #monkeypox for laboratory testing and for clinical management & infection prevention, the 🆕 guidance provides the first WHO recommendations on use of (smallpox) vaccines for monkeypox.
The goal of the global outbreak response for #monkeypox is to control the outbreak, and to effectively use public health measures to prevent onward spread of the disease. Judicious use of vaccines can support this response.
Based on currently assessed risks and benefits and regardless of vaccine supply, mass vaccination is not required nor recommended for #monkeypox at this time.
