2/ Quoting the results of a small-scale study, @MonicaGandhi9 misleadingly claims “… We should reassure the public that Long COVID can be prevented through vaccination. Studies with good controls suggest that vaccination reduces the risk of Long COVID significantly.”
3/ This is simply not true.
4/ Findings of this large-scale study showed vaccination only partially reduces the risk of death and post-acute sequelae - by 34% and 15%, respectively.
6/ The greatest benefit appeared to be in reducing blood clotting & lung complications.
But there was **no difference** between the vaccinated & unvaccinated when it came to longer-term risks of neurological issues, gastrointestinal symptoms, kidney failure & other conditions.
“The findings show that vaccination only partially reduces the risk of death and post-acute sequelae, suggesting that reliance on it as a sole mitigation strategy may not most optimally reduce the risk of the long-term health..
consequences of SARS-CoV-2 infection.”
And that “…continued emphasis on primary prevention of breakthrough SARS-CoV-2” is required to reduce this burden.
9/ Vaccination does not “significantly” reduce risk of Long COVID as @MonicaGandhi9 falsely claims.
Such spread of deliberate and dangerous misinformation is a serious threat to public health. @sfchronicle, please retract immediately.
10/ Despite our collective wish to return to normality, #CovidIsNotOver. While current vaccines offer some protection, they are not as effective as we had initially hoped. Current treatments for acute Covid are not yet widely or easily accessible.
11/ Despite another false claim by @MonicaGandhi9, good-fitting, high-grade #FFP2 or #FFP3 masks do reduce transmission & save lives. #COVIDisAirborne, which means infectious particles are carried in the air. I encourage everyone to #WearAMask😷 esp when in indoor public spaces.
Great work Ireland. Refreshing to see a public health message which promotes exercising caution and protecting others through social responsibility. @HSELive
This message could not be more timely as the UK starts its third wave of the year.
“The Lib Dems stormed to victory Tiverton and Honiton in Devon, overturning a 24,000 Tory majority with a 30% swing”
“Their leader Ed Davey hails the ‘biggest by-election victory our country has ever seen’ while winning candidate Richard Foord says it has sent a shockwave through politics”
“Labour won the Wakefield by-election in West Yorkshire, having lost the seat to the Conservatives at the 2019 general election”
1/ Public health messaging has failed to warn the public on:
➡️ Long term infection harms
➡️ How to protect oneself from infection
Given we’re at the start of a new wave, case numbers & rates of hospitalisation are rapidly rising, here’s a
⚠️ public health warning ⚠️
🧵
This message is important to everyone, but is especially pertinent to those who erroneously believe #LongCovid is ‘just tiredness after infection’ and it won’t happen to them because they’ve had it and ‘it was just a cold’
I’m sure most people would consider an MRI extensive. In this study, two long covid patients underwent neuro cognitive testing (questionnaire results revealed deficits in verbal memory and attention). They then underwent MRI imaging and a PET.
MRI of both patients was unremarkable.
PET imaging however showed ‘widespread’ and ‘profound’ neurological inflammation the brain. (The luminescent yellow & red is inflammation).
Autoimmunity and abnormal clotting are likely downstream processes of #viralpersistence - whether that be in the form of intracellular viral reservoirs, viral debris or synthetic vaccine spike.
2/ Plasma samples were collected from a cohort of 63 individuals previously infected with #SARSCoV2, 37 of whom were diagnosed with #LongCovid (PASC) & 26 recovered.
3/ In the PASC group (n=37) , blood samples were collected multiple times up to 12 months after first positive result.
In those individuals recovered (n=26), blood samples were collected up to 5 months post diagnosis.
