1/ Thread on a self imposed predicament faced by the establishment, which consists of 2 main problems:
A) #Johnson
B) #littlekeir

2/ Faced with the possibility of a @jeremycorbyn led Government, the establishment turned to explicitly incompetent and corrupt but reliably populist #Johnson as the one man who could stop #Corbyn. The reasoning was probably this: However bad #Johnson would turn out...

3/ Wouldn't matter all that much because with @jeremycorbyn ousted, the system could go back to normal, with a "competent", if dull, Blairite Labour leader ready to step into the breach with a capitalist B-team should #Johnson prove too embarrassing. #littlekeir seemed perfect.

4/ The former lawyer & DPP, with a long list of establishment connections looked, on paper, to be the epitome of a safe pair of hands. But he's useless. As incompetent as #Johnson but without the personality or political instincts, he has all the electoral appeal of toothache.

5/ Even, worse for the establishment, #Johnson has turned out worse than predicted. Not because he's unusually corrupt (see, for example, most other PMs) but because he's so shameless with it. #Johnson is quite prepared to give the lie to UK "democracy" to get his own way.

6/ Past PMs had a higher loyalty to the state, if perhaps only because of compromising material on their past behaviour sitting in the vaults of MI5. With #Johnson it's all out in the open and he doesn't care. They seemingly have no serious leverage...

7/ So #Johnson breaks laws with impunity, and makes a mockery of Parliamentary process, exposing the unwritten "constitution" for the sham it truly is. British Parliamentary "democracy" is largely a fiction told through pageantry & high rhetoric.

8/ In truth, there is no constitution, just a loose agglomeration of gentlemen's agreements masquerading as due process. These can be broken at whim, without real consequence. If someone chooses not to play their part in the pageantry correctly, the facade becomes too obvious.

9/ If #Johnson were playing by the rules, he'd have already stepped aside to make way for someone more palatable. Instead, he's rather enjoying the perks of power - and squandering our money - and wants to push ahead with another term...

10/ To preserve the myth that British democracy works & does not reward the corrupt and venal, #Johnson would have to lose. But if an election is held soon it seems unlikely that #littlekeir's #Labour will beat him. Furthermore #Johnson will be leading the Tories...

11/ during a time in which the Anglo Saxon empire is faced with an unprecedented economic collapse if he stays in office for several more years. The long term reputational damage to the Tory Party and establishment is likely to be acute...

12/12 So the question now is will #Johnson be allowed to survive the summer or be ousted before he is able to call an election that he would probably win? 🤨
