#TodayinHistory in 2016, after taking China to court, the Philippines won its case in the Permanent Court of Arbitration, when PCA declared China's #9dashline illegal and invalid. It was a historic victory not only for #PH but for all of the world's coastal states. THREAD.
The @PCA_CPA is the world's oldest intergovernmental org (1899) based in The Hague, Netherlands, tasked to settle disputes bet states. When @UN Convention on the Law of the Sea was entered into by 119 states (incl #PH & China) in 1982, it entitled archipelagic states their own...
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), wherein the coastal state has sole exploitation rights over natural resources 370 km from its baseline to the sea. Since the UNCLOS went into force in 1994, 167 states have signed this Charter of the Sea.
#PH had 17 yrs of bilateral negotiation w/ China but China never budged, claiming historic rights on much of South China Sea. China began pushing its 9-dash line claim in 1992, encompassing 3.5M sq km of South China Sea w/c overlaps w/ EEZs of many Southeast Asian coastal states.
On 5 Sept 2012, via Administrative Order No. 29 issued by the PNoy administration, #PH renamed its EEZ in the South China Sea as "#WestPHSea," citing the 1982 UNCLOS, further bolstering PH's claim.
On 22 Jan 2013, #PH finally filed its case vs China to @PCA_CPA, the 1st time that a legit case vs. 9-dash line was raised. Meanwhile, on 19 Feb 2013, China declared it would not participate in the arbitration. On 30 March 2014, PH submitted a 4k-page memorial (w/ 40 maps) to PCA
... “repackaging” the PH legal case in such a way that the center of the argument is maritime delimitation & entitlement. This was lauded as a "stroke of genius" bec PCA has no mandate to tackle issues of sovereignty. The Tribunal convened from 7 to 13 July 2015.
In Oct 2015, it certified that it has jurisdiction over the case. It heard the merits from the PH delegation (composed of delegates from the 3 branches of gov), from 24 to 30 Nov 2015, even w/out China's delegation as per the PCA rules.
#OnThisDay in 2016, at 5:00 pm local time, in a historic victory for #PH, @PCA_CPA announced its verdict that: 1. The Nine-dash line claim of China is illegal & invalid, its "historic rights" argument contrary to UNCLOS itself; 2. #PH entitlements do not overlap w/ that of China;
3. China violated #PH's sovereign rights on PH's EEZ, interfering w/ Filipino fishing & oil exploration; 4. China caused harm to the environment by building artificial islands in disputed areas.
6 yrs have passed, & many states have already cited & supported PH's victory.

#TodayinHistory in 1974, the Philippines hosted the Miss Universe beauty pageant for the first time, the first international event held in the newly inaugurated Folk Arts Theater in Manila, which only opened seven days prior. THREAD.
Since 1966, prior to the declaration of Martial Law, Pres. Ferdinand Marcos & First Lady Imelda Marcos earned strong criticism from SenatePH & people for having an "edifice complex," that is, pouring public funds on infrastructure at the expense of other more pressing priorities.
With the declaration of Martial Law in 1972, all checks & balances of gov were abolished. The Senate & House of Reps, who checks & approves the yearly gov budget, were suspended, w/ the Legislative Bldg padlocked. The Chief Executive had all the coffers of gov for the taking.
History distorters are arrogant: they dismiss evidence to uphold their bias. Meanwhile, the scholar exhibits humility. When faced w/ evidence, s/he adjusts accordingly, remaining confident that any rational person encountering the same evidence will arrive at the same conclusion.
The scholar is transparent in how s/he got his findings, showing how s/he weighed the evidence, citing reliable sources— imbibing the principle that Truth sides with no one. We only side w/ it or dismiss it. Are propagandists/history distorters ready for the truth?
No one is.
Tsismis? All I can say is, a historical study goes through fire and withstands scrutiny in the field before it gets published. Gossip spreads bec it pokes emotion, no matter how flimsy or unreliable it’s source is.
#TodayinHistory in 1945, recognizing destruction wrought by #WWII on banks in the Philippines, #PH Congress passed Commonwealth Act 672 to rehabilitate the Philippine National Bank, then issuer of currency notes, custodian of bank reserves, & sole depository of gov funds. THREAD.
The Japanese occupiers upon invading Southeast Asia in 1941, heavily relied on printing large quantities of money. Due to Japan's monetary monopoly, & having been cut off from export markets, Southeast Asia suffered from hyperinflation (money devaluation).
Furthermore, Japan needed to finance their war machine, hence confiscation of private assets in their occupied countries. "Mickey Mouse money" became infamous in #PH, as people have had to pay a bayong of these devalued paper bills to buy common commodities such as rice, etc.
#TodayinHistory in 1860 & 1869, 2 Píos of #PH Revolution were born— Pío del Pilar & Pío Valenzuela. Both were #Katipunan leaders. It was common practice for newborns to be given a saint's name whose feast day falls on the birth date (St. Pope Pius I). Hence the name "Pio." THREAD
Pio del Pilar or Pio Isidro y Castañeda was born at Barrio Culi-culi, San Pedro de Macati, to farmer Isaac del Pilar of Pasay & embroiderer Antonia Castañeda of Mandaluyong. "Del Pilar" was used to hide his family from prying Spanish agents. He became cabeza de barangay & soon...
Teniente del Barrio of Culi-culi in 1890. He was a passionate supporter of Rizal's ideas. In 1896, he joined the Katipunan, & est. his own Sangguniang Balangay in Culi-culi. When the revolution broke out in Aug, he was arrested
#TodayinHistory in 1986, months after #EDSA People Power Revolution, some Marcos loyalists in the military led by Arturo Tolentino occupied the Manila Hotel. Tolentino proclaimed himself "acting President." This was 1st of the 7 coup attempts vs Pres. Corazon Aquino's gov. THREAD
In the Snap Election in early Feb 1986, 2 contending parties competed: Ferdinand Marcos w/ Arturo Tolentino, & Corazon Aquino w/ Salvador Laurel (for Pres & VP respectively). COMELEC proclaimed victory for Marcos despite clear electoral fraudulence.
Aquino challenged the result as mass boycott of Marcos crony companies gained momentum. Meanwhile, the Reform the Armed Forces Movement (RAM) planned a coup vs. Marcos but was prematurely discovered. Upon failing, the coup plotters defected from the AFP.
We often wonder why #ArawngKagitingan happened the way it did. Why commemorate one of the most humiliating defeats in #PH#history & call it “Kagitingan” (Valor)?
History, military strategy, & geography provide the answer.
THREAD.
When the Japanese began its invasion of Southeast Asia in Dec 1941, it first attacked the US fleet in Pearl Harbor, crippling the only reinforcements for the defense of the islands. Hours after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Japanese began its invasion of #PH.
W/ the war machine sustained as Japanese marched from Bicol, Lingayen, and Ilocos towards Manila, to discourage attacks in the capital, Gen. Douglas MacArthur issued his War Plan Orange (WPO-3), gathering all Filipino & American forces in the Bataan peninsula.
