1/ Let’s have a deep dive into the Stardust upgrade.
As you probably know, the #Shimmer Beta network (incentivized staging network) just went live.

First off, did you already see the new visualizer?

2/ There are five phases for shipping Shimmer. We are now in phase 3 – Public Beta Testing of the network has started.

3/ All client libraries, tools and a lot of documentation has been published.

Also, the IOTA Wiki has been rewritten, give it a check:

4/ Now is the time to start testing and building applications on top of Shimmer. Many projects already do so.

According to Dom, this release marks the biggest #IOTA milestone of the year so far.

5/ With Shimmer, a token migration is not necessary, because there won’t be a new signature scheme (with Chrysalis, a token migration to the new network was necessary).

6/ All changes to the IOTA network (Tangle) can be found inside of the Tangle Improvement Proposals (TIP). Check it out:

8/ There is a defined framework for TIPs in place:

Discussion ➡️ Agreement ➡️ Evaluation of TIP ➡️ Draft ➡️ Work on implementation

9/ Why is Stardust so important? For the first time, it’s possible to run #smartcontracts on IOTA. It’s not yet another EVM chain, but the base layer of IOTA gets used as infrastructure to run many blockchains on top of it.

10/ This multi-ledger scenario opens up completely new use cases and is unique within the #crypto space.

11/ It will take some time until we see user interfaces built on top of this, because developers are just getting started building on it.

12/ Smart contracts (EVM chain) are currently in internal alpha testing with some community projects.

Testing will be opened up soon, so that everyone can deploy smart contracts on Shimmer EVM.

13/ The Hornet node software is the one supporting the new Shimmer network. Check the new Beta V2 release. Testing is currently ongoing.

14/ There are various client libraries, developers can choose from:

Rust, Go, Python, JavaScript, Java and TypeScript are available as interfaces to communicate with the network.

15/ A new wallet library has been built, easing the live of developers a lot:

Note: The protocol is capable of much more, this library only contains core features.

16/ Many community projects within the Shimmer ecosystem will open-source their own libraries.

This will act as huge boost and benefit the overall ecosystem.

17/ In the coming weeks, new features will be added to Firefly Desktop Stardust, so that everyone can test them.

18/ The Network Explorer has been rewritten. The milestone interval has been lowered to 5 seconds (from 10 seconds), making the network faster than it used to be.

This value might be lowered even further, depending on testing.

19/ New terminology – we are not talking about “transactions” anymore but about “blocks” instead.

Why? IOTA is not a blockchain, but a DAG – multiple interconnected chains. They are forming a web of blocks. So, the new terminology for IOTA 2.0 is setting things right!

20/ Currently we have one transaction per block. This might change in the future, allowing for more transactions per block.

21/ There have been changes to the protocol architecture regarding data sent via the network:

The processing & filtering logic of data has been offloaded to application specific node extensions, resulting in increased node performance.

22/ Cool new feature – Proof of Inclusion:

It’s possible to prove specific data has been part of the Tangle at a given point in time (via an easy API call).

23/ Permanode (Chronicle) has been re-engineered and restructured for performance and maintainability reasons.

In addition, there is a great new set of tools for developers available (e.g. Analytics API).

24/ The main target audience for Shimmer clearly are developers. Amazing developer experience team of the IOTA Foundation is empowering everyone to build.

Community projects must feedback what to improve/add.

25/ The beta version of @fireflywallet Desktop Stardust has been released and is available for testing:

26/ One of the coolest new features? Setting an expiry date for transactions.

Sending tokens unintentionally to a wrong or dead address? Don’t worry – if the tokens are not claimed within a pre-defined amount of time, they will be sent back!

This is a game-changer in crypto!

27/ One of the most important and unique features of Shimmer: Whatever assets are held, they can be wrapped into a L1 representation that can travel freely across the Tangle to other blockchains.

28/ We will see cross-chain asset & token migrations from one blockchain running on top of IOTA to another blockchain running on top of IOTA.

No complicated bridge solution is needed!

29/ Next steps? Testing! Try to break things! Also, internal stress-tests for benchmarking to check limits will take place before the Shimmer mainnet will be released. Also, having verifications by community-run projects assuring Shimmer Beta is running stable, is crucial.

30/ By the way – the @Ledger team is closely involved in the whole process!

All in all, many different tokens and a great number of #dApps on top of #Shimmer are to be expected.

31/ Personal note: Amazing stuff! Only a max. of 300 live viewers during the presentation?
