good morning happy Sunday☀️today on #Insiders are ABC host Pat Karvelas, 9fax (smh) international editor Peter Hartcher and murdoch editor James Campbell. The interview is with federal Energy minister Chris Bowen.
this thread is not fact-checked. I block snitch-taggers. Tweets in this thread are hashtagged #Insiders for your muting convenience.
opening spiel is on the NPC event this week, which Speers calls “a blunt warning from China” delivered directly in Canberra - at the invitation of journalists. He hypes up regional tensions. Briefly mentions National cabinet and coercive control. Then more China. #Insiders
the montage is politicians and journalists on China and the #NPC event. Clips of Wong calling de-escalation. Whatever Simon Birmingham thinks. Marles and Chalmers. The “necessary means” and “use your imagination” grabs. #Insiders
the usual chest beating rhetoric from Dutton. Three clips of Dutton. Same for Marles. No PM. Lots of war-conflict journalism. #Insiders
#MakingNews is the refusal of bosses to pay Australian workers, which is labelled “skilled migration push”. Also in the news is the misogyny of the Liberal Party, which is called “more women”. Speers the editorialises on “what China wants”. #Insiders
panel. We start with the #NPC speech. Hartcher says China is not offering any concessions and wants Australia to make substantive concessions and “wants Australia to kowtow”. He describes criticism of the Aust media at the NPC too. #Insiders
they are demanding that media stop criticising China, says Hartcher. They are demanding self-censorship. Clip but I missed who it was. The Chinese ambassador I think. Karvelas says there was a “charm offensive” and the message “leaves no room for debate” on Taiwan. #Insiders
their position is to take Taiwan by force if necessary, says Karvelas. She says the prospect of re-education is alarming. Speers says Australia and the US have been “very careful” in response to activity around Taiwan. #Insiders
clip of Marles saying we want a the TaiwanStrait to return to “normal, peaceful”. He is acting PM (hence no PM in the montage - my mistake) and Campbell says everybody have a shower and sit down for a bit is a good idea. He calls the PRC a “black box”. Thanks, James. #Insiders.
back to Hartcher who describes the Chinese government in Taiwanese airspace and a white paper that is now contradicted. He says potentially China will deploy troops to Taiwan. All three mention the Pelosi visit. #Insiders
should Biden have said he opposed her visit? Hartcher says once China objected she had to go. Campbell calls the Chinese response sabre rattling and that the “war games” have not worked. He points to the sinking of the Russian warship in the Black Sea. #Insiders
a survey on the Taiwanese people’s “resolve” to resist any Chinese invasion. Karvelas repeats the “chilling”description of “use your imagination”. She advises Australians to watch the #NPC address on iview. She says Wong did not dignify it with a response. #Insiders
bit of bothsidesing on Dutton and “strong bipartisanship” on China is agreed. There is no more Manchuria candidate talk, says Speers. He then segues to the interview with international climate change implications and National energy objectives clip. #Insiders
interview. Bowen is ashes to explain the National energy objectives. He says energy supply is our biggest emissions and there were no National objectives. It was silly, says Bowen, and we fixed it we are building on the target passed the week before. #Insiders
will the regulator step in to direct energy be sourced to renewables? Bowen gives the example of Transgrid in Broken Hill being told to keep running their old diesel generators? Something like that. #Insiders
business investment certainty, says Bowen. State and territory co-operation. But does it stop gas plants? asks journo who promoted “gas-led recovery” for the Morrison government for over two years. #Insiders
what does it change? Bowen says it changes the way the Australian Energy market regulatory authority makes its decisions and gives them another tool to regulate capacity. Does the capacity mechanism include coal and gas? #Insiders
the supply has been too slow, says Bowen. Four gigawatts have been taken out of the market and only one new gigawatt has come on line. He says we need a mechanism to get the new generation on as coal fired power stations inevitably close. #Insiders
it is about underwriting reliability as we transition to renewables, says Bowen,m. But will it include prolonging coal fired power? asks Speers. Various mechanisms, industries. We are all trying to get more renewables into the system and maintain reliability, says Bowen #Insiders
this is so different from the last 10 years. The relevant minister is clearly describing commitment to transitioning away from coal and to renewables. He praises Tomago smelter for its transition plans. But what if they don’t, or can’t? says Speers. #Insiders
what about offsets? Bowen says net zero does involve offsets and the government is ensuring the offset market functions. Names Ian Chubb as overseeing the offset design. #insiders
there is also a review of Beetaloo. Bowen says the Pepper review will set out how offsets operate in Beetaloo. But what about the existing 215 big polluters? Bowen cites emissions reduction technology. He says the world is decarbonising. #Insiders
we would be slapped with carbon tariffs if we were not doing this work says Bowen. Will the safeguards mechanism stop new coal and gas projects? It is not designed to do that, says Bowen. He repeats “facility by facility”. And the minerals required for solar panels? #Insiders
what are you doing to ensure Australia has secure supply of these crucial minerals? Wow. When was the last time a press gallery journalist concerned themselves with solar panel input supply chains. #Insiders
we want to be adding more value to those minerals in Australia, says Bowen. We want to mine the lithium and turn it into batteries. That’s why we have a battery manufacturing hub policy. #Insiders
what about the announcement that China is suspending climate change talks with the US? Bowen says he hopes those two biggest emitters resume talking to each other. #Insiders
back to panel. Speers again humble brags about how complex is the policy he has been reading up on to interview ministers who are across their portfolio and negotiating substantive change. #Insiders
he hit the ground running, says Karvelas. He looks relaxed and comfortable, says Campbell. He “stumbled into” running an country’s energy policy in a crisis, says Hartcher (he ran in an election and won, Peter). #Insiders
“all that sort of stuff will be part of that discussion” - the sort of “contribution” Campbell makes whenever he is on #Insiders
Hartcher returns to China and says Australia has to develop sovereign manufacturing capabilities. We just heard that minister is prepared to do it at least for batteries, Hartcher says. That minister lol #Insiders
the upcoming jobs summit, the ACTU list of demands and clip of Chalmers saying the unions are not the government [abbr]. Campbell chortles that the government will put the ACTU list “on the fridge”. Hur hur. #Insiders
it is not a tax summit, says Speers, and Karvelas says it is easy to un-legislate tax cuts. They are getting harder to defend, says Speers. Except for bracket creep, says Campbell, coz that flimsy nonsense that was promoted by Frydenberg must be aired. #Insiders
clip of (Liberal Party deputy leader) Ley saying the jobs summit is a stunt. Clip of Littleproud (National Party leader) telling Sky he would accept a jobs summit invitation. This typically messy divided politicking puts the panel in their happy place. #Insiders
coming back to what is likely to be achieved, says Speers. The Treasurer Jim Chalmers has not rejected the ACTU demands outright. Hartcher says the ACTU discussion paper is from the 1950s and contains “discredited” ideas. #Insiders
there will be a discussion paper from Treasurt too, says Hartcher, and he says the ACTU list has the “virtue” of letting the government appear reasonable to business by rejecting “discredited ideas” like paying workers for the value they create. #Insiders
the finding of bullying and sexual harassment in the NSW parliament. Karvelas says this is gendered and there were five attempted sexual assaults. She plugs her column on gender and says places with traditionally majority men produce these cultures. #Insiders
she is not saying women can not preside over these cultures too of course says Karvelas and Hartcher points out that part of the period the bullying report covers was during a woman Premiership. The feminist illiteracy in this comment is woeful. #Insiders
NSW gets another go, this time the Barilaro clusterfuck. Campbell poo poos his colleagues ad says the public do not care. Karvelas says the public do care. Speers says we have to move on #Insiders
#TalkingPictures is up, another murdoch politics person. Sarah is a back to you Speersy laydee.
#FinalObservations 1 is Hartcher saying the Trump story has a long way to run and a mass uprising is possible if Trump is prosecuted. #Insiders
#FinalObservations 2 is Campbell saying that the Victorian Liberals are “really scared” that they could lose some seats in the “tealy areas” in the Vic state election. #Insiders
#FinalObservations 3 is Karvelas asking people to pay attention to teachers jobs and pay and responsibilities and a “big shakeup” is needed, coming. #Insiders
the outtake is Peter Dutton trying to act like a normal human being towards a woman colleague for the cameras at Ekka Ag show? in Brisbane. #Insiders
this has been another edition of watching #Insiders so you don’t have to 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼
just #RaiseTheAge cowards. Stop giving police more powers to wreck lives. Take one away.
AG talkfest today. They would rather expand police powers to criminalise and incarcerate Black people than take away the police power to target and criminalise Black children.
the chief law officers in every jurisdiction are going to announce today that these blokes are the solution to domestic violence.
good morning from unceded Darug lands☀️today on #Insiders are Guardian Aus editor Lenore Taylor, Ch10/ABC host Waleed Aly and ABC politics editor Andrew Probyn. The interview is with opposition defence spokesperson handy Andrew Hastie.
more Andrews than women this morning. Like a corporate board. #Insiders
opening spiel is “China shows its force” - the Pelosi visit - and Labor “celebrating” passing a 43% emissions reduction target by 2030 in legislation. #Insiders
good morning☀️happy Sunday! Today on #Insiders and live from Garma on Yolngu lands are ABC Indigenous Affairs editor Bridget Brennan, Guardian Indigenous affairs editor Lorena Allam, and QandA host Stan Grant. The interview is with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
the show opens with a Welcome from Jarwu Yunupingu in Yolngu and English, who asks the audience to spread their culture from Garma. #Insiders
opening spiel is that it has “also” been a big week with the first sitting week of the new Parliament. The montage is politicians and journo claims, mostly about the 43% emissions reduction being legislated and the inflation rate. #Insiders
Albanese is up. He opens with acknowledgement in language. Tribute to dancers and elders. It is his fourth visit to Garma. “On what is was and always will be Aboriginal land” - applause.
commitment to the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart, and the PM introduces the - Minister Linda Burney, Senator Pat Dodson, Senator Malandirri McCartney, new member for Lingiari Marion Scrymgour, AG Mark Dreyfus and Luke Gosling. A “bipartisan” nod to Leeser.
humility and hope, says Albanese. He says the tide is running with us and he believes there is a place in Australian hearts for the Uluṟu Statement from the Heart. Reprises the courtesy theme.
maybe ABC management does not weigh up the implications of amplifying failed Liberal Party politicians who campaign for gruesome death industries. Or they do, and decide to legitimise corrupted profiteering anyway. I bet they rely on a weak “satire” rationale.
