1. Pray in Brahma Muhurata
Brahma Muhurta is the morning period between 3.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m.
You can chant Krishna's name during this period to purify your mind and surroundings and have a refreshing start to the day.
2. Fast until midnight
Fasting is an important component of celebrating Janmashtami. If possible, begin fasting at dawn and refrain from eating until midnight.
If fasting till midnight feels too much of a burden, you can consume water, fruits, and milk.
3. Prepare traditional foods
During Janmasthami, you can prepare traditional food items like Sabudana Vada, Sabudana Thalipeeth, Dahi Aloo, Roasted Makhana, etc, and offer them to Krishna.
People also make Makhan Mishri Bhog which is considered Krishna's favorite dish.
4. Bathe and clothe Krishna's deity
Bathing the deity of Krishna and dressing it in new clothes is another important aspect of Janmasthami, which is called Abhisheka.
If you have a Krishna deity in your home, you can perform the Abhisheka with milk or fragrant water and dress Krishna's idol in colorful clothes.
5. Worship ceremony at midnight
Finally, during Krishna's birth at midnight, it is time to hold a ceremony to worship Krishna and welcome him into your home.
In the ceremony, you can do kirtan, sing devotional songs or chant Krishna's name with love and devotion. After that, you can break your fast by eating snacks and traditional dishes that are made during Janmasthami.
