ఘంటశాల వెంకటేశ్వరరావు 1922 డిశంబర్‌ 4న గుడివాడ మండలం చౌటపల్లిలో ఘంటశాల సూర్యనారాయణ, రత్నమ్మ దంపతులకు జన్మించారు. చిన్నప్పటి నుండే భజనలు, కీర్తనలు తండ్రి వెంట పాడుతూ ఉండేవారు.
తండ్రి ఆశయం నెరవేర్చాలనే లక్ష్యంతో సంగీత గురుకులంలో చేరారు. అక్కడి కట్టుబాట్లను తట్టుకోలేక తిరిగి సొంత ఊరికి వచ్చేశారు. తెలిసిన కొందరు సంగీత విద్వాంసుల ఇళ్ళలో పని చేస్తూ సంగీతం అభ్యసించాలని నిర్ణయించుకున్నారు. ఈ క్రమంలో పని ఒత్తిడి పెరగడంతో ఆయన సంగీత కళాశాలలో చేరాలని అనుకున్నారు.
