The Booking Game

.... Elon Musk's solar business and straddled with "production hell" for the #Model X, things looked dicey. Till the book ings for the Model 3 kicked in. With nearly half a million bookings at $1,000 apiece, #Tesla's books saw an influx of $500 million (1/8)
and it has never had to look back since.

The opening of bookings is a crucial milestone in the launch of a new #car .... bookings have formed the cornerstone of the success of many #auto companies here, including the biggest of them all. It all started with #Maruti 800, (2/8)
which got over a lakh bookings when it was first launched, raising over half the investment needed to set up the plant to make the car. And then it got about one and a half lakh bookings when it underwent a generation change from the SS80 to the SB308.

That bookings (3/8)
record was obliterated with the nearly 3 lakh bookings for the #Fiat Uno. The joint venture between PAL and Fiat failed despite raising over Rs 500 crore from the bookings for its first car launch. Then came the #Tata Nano which also garnered over 2 lakh bookings, but (4/8)
could not translate the great interest into success.
1.15 lakh bookings for one of the big gest successes in the Indian automotive industry, the #Creta.
Now there is the #Mahindra Scorpio N that has garnered over a lakh bookings within the first 30 minutes of the window (5/8)
opening over 25,000 cars were booked within the first minute! Buyers were no doubt spurred by the long waiting period of nearly two years for the XUV 700 and one year for the #Thar. Also motivating them would have been the fact that introductory prices were offered to only (6/8)
the first 25,000 bookings.

Introductory prices have helped in getting record numbers of bookings. A fantastic introductory price of Rs 4.99 lakh from #Nissan saw the Magnite rake up the numbers, with the car attracting over 30,000 bookings within a month. The figure rose, (7/8)
crossing 70,000 in two months. Impressive for a company that was struggling to survive in the country.

WHY DO THE UNTOUCHABLES LIVE OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE ?

How did the Untouchables come to live outside the village? Were they declared to be Untouchables first and then deported out of the village and made to live outside? Or were they from the very beginning living outside (1/7)
the village and were subsequently declared to be Untouchables?

There is, of course, the view of the Hindu Shastras and if one wants to dignify it by calling it a theory one may do so. The Shastras of course say that the Antyajas should live and have their abode outside (2/7)
the village. For instance,' Manu says :
"X. 51. But the dwellings of the Chandalas and the Shvapakas shall be outside the village, they must be made Apapatras and their wealth (shall be) dogs and donkeys. X. 52.
Their dress (shall be) the garments of the dead, (they shall (3/7)

The history of Indian Cinema can be traced back to 1896 when the famous Lumiere Brothers’ of France demonstrated six soundless short films in Bombay. By 1899, Harishchandra Bhatvadekar made India’s first short film. This was one of the major milestones in Indian cinema. (1/4)
Throughout the first two decades, the trend continued with filmmakers. By 1920 there was a regular industry bringing out films starting with 27 per year and reaching 207 films in 1931. Today India makes about 800 feature films every year. Alam Ara (1931) was the genesis of (2/4)

Lack of forethought at the time of Independence was not limited to the choice of capital. It also cost Pakistan its share of India’s assets, both financial and military.

Pakistan was allocated a 17.5 per cent share in the assets and liabilities of British India. Cash balances 1
were held by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which held back the transfer of Rs 750 million for months. Fighting in Kashmir, which the Muslim League initiated with the help of Pashtun tribal raiders immediately after Partition, jeopardized Pakistan’s share of 165,000 tonnes
2
of arms, ammunition and other military material.

By 31 March 1948 India had transferred only 4,730 tonnes and another 18,000 tonnes by 10 September 1948. To this day, Pakistanis assert that India denied 142,000 tonnes of defence stores that should have come to Pakistan.

Fourteen days after the announcement of Partition, on 17 June, Liaquat informed the British that the Muslim League had decided to locate the headquarters of the Pakistan government temporarily in Karachi. He wrote to Mountbatten that ‘Accommodation, office and residential,

will, therefore, be required at Karachi by the 15th of August 1947, for the Ministers, officers and staff of the Government and the Members of the Constituent Assembly’ and asked for ‘readjustment in regard to the accommodation occupied by military units and

formations in Karachi’. Liaquat suggested that it would ‘be best if the military authorities who have considerable experience in these matters, could be requested to undertake the provision of the accommodation, together with the necessary furniture, telephones, etc.,
