#CReAM_RWI_22 #econtwitter
Can #immigration strengthen the monopsony power of firms? Yes, if immigrants have low reservation wages. We are thrilled to begin #Cream_RWI_22 with Jan Stuhler's @EconomicsUc3m talk on 1990s #immigration shocks in🇩🇪 and #monopsony relying on admin data #Cream_RWI_22 #econtwitter
@CVar_Sil is discussing the results of an experiment to assess Colombian's policy preferences to the inflow of 🇻🇪#migrants. They find that natives that view the crisis as an economic issue are more likely to support health access restrictive policies #Cream_RWI_22 #econtwitter
Julián Costas-Fernández @CReAM_Research starts the 2nd session considering the distributional consequences of #immigration in imperfect labour markets🇬🇧: Migration boosts labor productivity while contracting the labor share, shifting income from employees to owners. #Cream_RWI_22
@acahrens is now discussing the labor market consequences of policies that limit work prospects of #refugees. Admin🇨🇭data and policy variation within cantons show that mobility restrictions upon arrival have a negative effect on employment and income of refugees. #Cream_RWI_22
@BernhardEcon closes this session with a paper on spillover effects of 🇺🇸 #immigration enforcement laws on children’s human capital. These policies had a negative impact on the English proficiency of US-born children with at least one undocumented parent. #Cream_RWI_22
We continue with @sardoschau study on the effects of threat on the assimilation of refugees in 🇩🇪. They show that refugees assigned to more hostile regions converge to local culture more quickly, but no faster economic assimilation due to higher discrimination. #Cream_RWI_22
@cbatista_econ is now presenting the results of a randomized experiment aimed at reducing information gaps on the risky irregular #migration of young men in West Africa🇬🇲. The results show that information campaigns have only small impacts on the desire to migrate #Cream_RWI_22
@AndreGroeger is now discussing the relationship between World Bank foreign aid and #migration intentions and flows from developing countries. The study finds that project announcements decreases migration aspirations in the short-run, but varies across regions #Cream_RWI_22
@EconJoelMachado closes this round with a paper that estimates the effects of changes in bilateral #asylum policies (list of safe source countries) in the number of claims using a structural gravity model and finds a 30%⬇️in applications between countries involved #Cream_RWI_22
#Cream_RWI_22 first keynote is @paolopinotti78. Insightful talk on reception systems and an intervention fostering integration opportunities for refugee workers with personalized support in 🇮🇹. More information: forworkproject.eu
@matteogamalerio starts day 2 of #Cream_RWI_22 discussing the findings of 2 information provision online experiments in 🇪🇸and 🇮🇹 on how improving knowledge about the challenges faced by pay-as-you-go pension systems can improve natives’ attitudes.
@CamRemigereau is now showing that forced migrants transform the political landscape. She exploits a natural experiment resulting from the 1962 repatriates from 🇩🇿 in 🇫🇷 and finds that the far-right votes were higher in districts with high shares of repatriates #Cream_RWI_22
@sschneiderstraw investigates the effect of the coverage of 🇫🇷TV news programs on natives’ attitudes towards #immigration using natural language processing techniques. She concludes that increasing the salience of immigration increases polarization. #Cream_RWI_22
#Cream_RWI_22 continues with an inspiring keynote by @FranciscaAntman reviewing evidence on the historical experience of the assimilation and ethnic attrition of the Hispanic/Latino population in the 🇺🇸 and discussing current issues in the labor market, health, and education.
#Cream_RWI_22 final presentation. How do ethnic enclaves shape behavior? Contanza Biavaschi digitized 1930census information on the residence of newly arrived #migrants in NYC & finds that the concentration of naturalized co-ethnics increases naturalization. See you in 2024!
