Chapter Three of 'Austerity, the media & the UK public', by Mike Berry, reveals how national news media reports had several key impacts on the response to the 2008 financial crash, not least in
increasing public support for #austerity policies.
a) played a key role in establishing the public belief that the deficit was the result of government overspending especially in areas such as welfare and immigration (rather than eg the highly risky deregulation of the financial services)
b) led the public to believe that the deficit was highly dangerous & needed to be dealt with quickly; and
c) limited discussion of responses to the rise in the deficit to minor variations of #austerity policies, which meant that viewers were left unaware of alternatives.
Overall, the chapter finds that press & broadcasting defined the origins, consequences & solutions to the rise in public debt resultant from the 2008 financial crash in a narrow & highly proscribed way, which helped to increase public support for #austerity policies.

Sophia was a talented artist who lived with significant mental distress, & had been living on a sandwich a day for the last few months of her life after both her employment & support allowance (ESA) & her personal independence payment (PIP) had been stopped.
Her body was discovered by police in her flat in Hornchurch, Essex, in November last year, weeks after she had died.
Her electricity had been cut off months earlier for non-payment of bills.
"Consider #Brexit. It’s a foolish policy, to be sure, but much more than that. It was enabled by a vaguely worded referendum that was introduced by a prime minister who crossed his fingers and forbade preparation for the outcome." - Tim Harford, FT.
#Brexit "was sold to the British people on false pretences. A member of parliament, Jo Cox, was murdered during the campaign. Three of the prime ministers leading the project — Cameron, May and Truss — voted against it, and the other, Johnson, was notoriously ambivalent."
"Ever since the (Brexit) vote, the process has been mired in vitriol, contempt and denial. One does not have to be a diehard Remainer to look at the entire decision-making process and fear that the British polity is not really up to the grown-up job of running a country."

In 2020 the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Offfice deleted records of its discussions with the all too familiar & extremely controversial strategic communications companies SCL & Cambridge Analytica in Brazil.

'Money for everything? Universal basic income in a crisis'.
This paper explores universal basic income (#UBI) in relation to crisis, from #COVID19 to techno-economic disruptions to work and prospective post-capitalist transition.
Critical debates around automation, wage labour and post-work are brought into conversation with emerging trends in urban political economy around foundational infrastructure, smart cities and platform capitalism.
To deliver on the promise of UBI, it's argued that more radical structural interventions in capitalist asset ownership & property relations, alongside democratized state investment in technological development, UBI & infrastructure, are necessary counterparts to a sufficient UBI.
"The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, is considered to be one example of the rise of populism during the 2010s in Europe. During the decade that he has been in government, Hungary has been a forerunner in terms of democratic decline."
"Throughout this period, political communication has increasingly shifted online, & politicians are now actively using social media to gain political capital. Despite growing literature on online political communication, visual political communication remains underrepresented."
"Orbán’s case offers a unique opportunity to examine what authoritarian populism and maintenance of illiberalism look like when a regime has been in power for more than 10 years. Using visual discourse analysis, we analysed 131 visuals of Viktor Orbán’s Instagram from 2019."
