#SCOSummit2022 #SCO the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation compises 9 member countries. India and Pakistan joined up finally in 2017, and Iran might be admitted in 2022.
Between them they account for much of the world's contradictions. economist.com/the-economist-…
Russia looks to it because it is a pariah elsewhere. China as the World's Number 2 power in terms of econ and military might comes to it wielding the biggest clout. India and Pakistan admitted together in 2017 have been and are at loggerheads for as long as theyve been UN Members
India and China have just reached some sort of a pull-back-from-the-brink accord that leaves India shortchanged; they daren't admit it publicly. Russia and China have all but signed a mutual self-defence pact though Russia needs China more than China needs Russia.
Meanwhile, the only think China and Russia have in common is the unfriendliness of America. The US is supplying arms Ukraine to fight Russian invaders there, and supports Taiwan against any possible Chinese invasion.
America also stands by India but not explcitly against Chinese incursions in the Himalayan region. Outsie the SCO, India looks to #AUKUS and #QUAD to contain China.
The host country for #SCOSummit2022 is 95% Muslim but says nothing about either China's persecution of Uighurs or India's officially denied not-such-explicit-persecution of it's Muslims.
So with all this complex and contradictory background what the hell is the #SCO for? The only think I can think of is
a) its not western dominated
b) it provides a great Photo-Opportunity to publicity hungry authoritarian leaders to come together and strut about.
Oh and I forgot,
"In 2021, meanwhile, more than 50 people were killed in clashes on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan." acc to this nice essay in @TheEconomist

Look at this way,
Adani is the Worlds second richest man. At 155 Bn USD his networth = 4.9% of India's GDP of 3.2 Trillion USD

Musk (272 Bn), Bezos (152 Bn), Gates(106 Bn), and Zuckerberg (54 Bn) COMBINED have a networth of 584 billion USD = 2.78% of US GDP of 21 Trn USD
To reach 5% of US GDP you will have to combine to that lot, the networth of Buffet, Larry Page, Sergie Brin, larry Ellison, and Steve Ballmer. to reach 1 trillion USD of networth = 4.9% of US GDP
Vishwaguru needs 1 Adani to reach there.
Which insight goes to show that your size is more obvious when you are a big frog in a smaller well.

#Uzbekistan - the country where the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is meeting in Samarkand.
It was the Uzbek Soviet Socialist republic under the USSR till 1991. Islam Karimov moved on from First Secretary of the Communist Party to rule as president till he died in 2016
He won a rigged election in Dec 1991 winning 86% of the vote and then 3 further elections in 2000, 2007, and 2015 each time winning > 90% of the vote.
He ran a repressive and brutal regime. His successor and current President, Shavkat Mirziyoyev loosened things up.
#Uzenkistan is Constitutionally a secular nation. 95% of the population follow Islam. Article 29 "guarantees freedom of thought, speech and convictions". Article 31 guarantees "freedom of conscience" and "the right to profess or not to profess any religion".

Just leaving it here for people to decide for themselves: Some views espoused by Salvatore Babones, the Sydney university Professor whose opinion piece in Quadrant was advanced by @subramaniank as a counter to the criticism of Indian democracy by @TheEIU @vdeminstitute etc.

#India's right-wing #sanghi #whatsapp groups are seeing this message to day.
This series on the State run (i.e. RSS and BJP controlled) TV Channel will allegedly set the record straight on India's freedom movement.
here is a promotional video of the kind of stories that the 75-episode series will tell Indian citizens about

It is introduced by the Prof Heerman Tiwari.
In the opening scene in what looks like a Roman Catholic Seminary a man with a cross
around his neck is heard telling his men in stylised Hindi as spoken by the firangi, "India bahut hi prosperous hai, Unke saath trade karo, Hamara King ka yeh order hai, ki jo bhi tumhara ius mahaan yatra par hurdel kare, usko punish kiya jaye" The video then cuts to

My #Sanghi-infested #WhatsApp groups are sharing a story in an obscure California based online magazine (see pic).
Q. Why Now? the last election was in 2019 and the next is not till 2024.
A. To bury the shameful story of the shameful release of #BilkisBano's rapists. Image
The sad and depressing fact is that women have been involved in the unseemly jubilation and public felicitation of the 11 murderers and rapists who have been released.

"Why do women support Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi?" asks the article in fairobesrver.dot.com.

You might equally ask, Whe do you battered women stand by their tormentors?

It's hard to engage in any conversation with family in India for long before it turns to politics. Despite all the complaints about how bad things are, the refrain is always "There is no Alternative (TINA) - to Mr Modi". "No one else can possibly win 272 seats in 2024'
#MamtaBanerjee is a maverick firebrand, #Kejriwal is a charlatan, #Congress is a spent force, focused on family, other regional parties are limited to their regions - And therefore, TINA.
But look at the divisive policies, the lack of jobs, inflation, I say. "Yes but TINA!!!"
So now you know why there is this extreme relentless pursuit of every opposition leader esp from @INCIndia, the #ED raids, the #SocialMedia abuse and the character assassination.
It is all in aid of creating this entrenched self-fulfilling opinion in the minds of people - TINA.
