Because Alberta diverts almost $300 MILLION per year FROM public education to subsidize elite private schools—to subsidize the rich—there is less funding to support your child. (See linked thread below.)

Albertans have been conditioned to accept this instead of being outraged
The diversion of tax money to from public education to subsidize the rich is why Alberta public schools have some of the highest school fees and highest bus fees in the country. 🧵👇

When funding was given out for covid supports, elite for-profit private schools like Webber Academy received hundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars in subsidies.
What the practice of subsidizing the rich at the expense of the working class amounts to is state-sponsored segregated schools where the segregation is by wealth instead of by race. The practice is classist.

🧵👇
Though it isn’t racist on paper practice of class-segregation still has racist undertones. Access to education has always been a great equalizer. Barriers—like tuition or school fees—are used to keep education inaccessible. They are tools of the oppressor.
In 2020 Alberta received “more revenue from students (tuition: $1.35B) than oil/gas royalties ($1.2B).”

It would therefore cost about $1.35B/y to eliminate university tuition. Instead corporate revenue was cut, and education spending was slashed. Monetary barriers remain.
To the oppressing class (represented by the Conservative party) public education is viewed as a threat. An educated population is more difficult to control than one that is conditioned to accept classist subsidies for elite for-profit schools.

🧵👇
They fear education because they know that if the working class ever figured out how badly they were getting screwed over by the neoliberal policies that Conservatives love—tax cuts for the rich, service cuts for the poor—then they know they’d be in big trouble.
This is part of why the #UCP’s new curriculum is such a big deal. They need to ensure that the next generation of workers is taught to be as complicit as their parents in accepting oppression by Conservatives.

They want to maintain an “order” where they’re on top.
As an aside, this is also why wealthy Conservatives have bought up basically every newspaper and newsroom in the country.

To borrow from Marshall McLuhan:If they can control the medium, they can control the message.

🧵👇
To get back to our original question:“why can’t @RisdonShawna’s child get the support they need?”

it’s because the #UCP has cut revenue (remember their $4.3B corporate tax cut?) AND cut services so they van brag about a surplus.

Support was stolen.

Politics is about choices.

🏫Overcrowded classrooms are a choice.
🧑‍🏫Overworked teachers is a choice.
🚌Bus fees are a choice.

#abed #ableg
Firing 26,000 teachers aids, classroom support workers, and other educational staff was a choice.

Remember: private school funding was not cut. That was also a choice.

Conservatives are not stupid. They know that the choices they make will mean the working class will suffer.

This is not an accident. It is by design.

Pollution remains unhealthy around #Calgary due to ongoing wildfires in the mountains.

Climate change is real. The fact that events like this happen almost every. single. year. is frightening. What kind of future are we leaving for today’s children?

It is widely understood that wildfires are worsened by climate change.

It is widely understood that climate change is worsened by the fossil fuel industry.

It is not widely understood that the fossil fuel industry is heavily subsidized by Canadian Governments.

The term eugenics was coined in 1883 by British explorer and natural scientist Francis Galton. Alberta and British Columbia passed laws that created eugenics programs, in 1928 and 1933 respectively.
2,822 Albertans and over 200 British Columbians were sterilized through these programs. In 1937 Alberta amended its Sexual Sterilization Act to remove the need for informed consent for sterilization.

Supporters of Eugenics made assumptions that Canadian society could be improved by encouraging reproduction among certain groups — particularly Anglo-Saxon Protestants — and discouraging or limiting reproduction of other groups.

Doug Ford should give a huge thank-you to the @OntLiberal party for helping to ensure this victory for his second majority tonight.

@StevenDelDuca campaigned hard against the @OntarioNDP right to the very end.

I had a hunch that this was going on when I saw all the calls for strategic voting—which often just confuses progressively minded voters.

Small-C, conservative-lite, Liberals, will nver solve the problems created by big-C Conservatives.

Consider: of those who thought Ford was a great/good/OK premier, 13%/10%/33% of respondents were Liberal voters.

h/t to @christoaivalis.

Expect a “strong” majority to show “confidence” in Kenney’s “leadership” when the results of the #UCP “vote” are revealed later today. #ableg

The religious right haven’t been this close to power in decades. Don’t expect them to give that power up easily.

They worked hard for their 2019 victory. #ableg
