People are still being carried away on stretchers in Itaewon. Bystanders say there was a massive crowd and people got trapped. Truly horrific. This should have been a fun Saturday night out but it’s ended in tragedy
From where I’m standing it looks like at least 20 bodies under a blue tarpaulin on Itaewon’s Main Street next to the Hamilton Hotel
Emergency services sprinting down the street, non stop ambulances. Stunned crowds still in Halloween costumes
A friend told me he was in Itaewon last night and the crowd was so large he was pinned in and could only move in one direction. Too early to say what happened here tonight but it seems like crowd control went very wrong
Just saw a medic giving CPR to someone on a stretcher going up the street. This incident is still unfolding #Itaewon #Seoul
Police are trying to clear Itaewon but I think a lot of people are confused and may have just arrived. Still big crowds in Halloween costumes

Taking a moment to try to absorb what’s happened in #Itaewon tonight where so many young people came for a Halloween night out and ended up tragically losing their lives - 120 so far but emergency vehicles still here. Most people here in their 20s, local, many foreign students
For people who don’t know Seoul, Itaewon is always crowded with partygoers on a Sat night but tonight was especially busy because people were looking forward to celebrating Halloween for the first time since Covid. Many described frightening moments being swept up by the crowd
Witnesses told me they couldn’t breathe and felt lucky to be alive. Still unclear how events unfolded but seems by 11pm the crush of people became unsustainable and that’s when ambulances arrived. Police officers were standing on vehicle roofs trying to get the crowd to clear

Now that I’ve left #Ukraine 🇺🇦on assignment for @TelegraphWorld, a thread on a remarkable country of strong, resilient people. Wars are caused by the worst of humanity, but extreme circumstances can also bring out the best of humanity. It’s good to focus on the best 1/
First up, Andriy Sadovyy, the mayor of Lviv, who is speeding ahead with plans to create one of the largest rehab centres in the world for what he estimates could be up to 50,000 war amputees - a staggering number of people facing lifelong consequences from Russia’s invasion 2/
Among them is Serhiy Pasechnik, who lost his leg in a Russian tank attack. He looked forlorn when told it cld take a year to fit a decent prosthetic but still found the strength to go & play with his energetic toddler son 3/

The UN has demanded answers over the alleged police harassment, intimidation and the arrest of frontline medics during the #HongKong pro-democracy protests. Medical workers - the people we rely on to keep us alive in a crisis 1/
telegraph.co.uk/news/0/hong-ko…
The UN probe was instigated by Dr Darren Mann, a #HongKong-based British war surgeon out of concern that the Hong Kong police were purposefully targeting and preventing medical workers from their humanitarian work at the height of the city's civil unrest 2/
In a letter to the Chinese and Hong Kong govts, the UN raises allegations of medics with ID being accused of rioting, or “arrested and hand-cuffed with zip-cords either in the vicinity of violent confrontations or in the course of performing their legitimate healthcare duties.”3/

Adding to a small flurry of stories this week about how #Taiwan is doing a stellar job on fighting the #coronavirus I interviewed Stanford’s Prof Jason Wang about his paper on what Taiwan is getting right @TelGlobalHealth @TelegraphWorld 1/ telegraph.co.uk/news/2020/03/0…
The link to Prof Wang’s paper is below. He said that #Taiwan had been ready - after Sars in 2003 they had already been preparing for the next epidemic. “You want governments to do stuff before you know it’s happening” 2/ fsi.stanford.edu/news/how-taiwa…
“The establishment of the national health command centre was really critical,” said Prof Wang. This integrates central and local data, processes it and communicates key messages to the public about #Covid19 prevention 3/
