I've noticed that my observation comparing #Bakhmut to #Verdun and #Passchendaele are now pretty much the accepted comparisons, and they should be. What a nightmare battlefield. There are however some things that make it a very much 21st century war vs just WWI redux. First the
suffering is in some ways worse. The troops from late 1915-18 had become masters of trench warfare. Trenches were deep with duckboards to keep heads below the bullet line and feet above the mud. Dug outs were artillery resistant and could only be hit by happenstance and could
not be individually targeted. The night while full of terrors at least allowed movement behind the trenches and for raiding parties across no man's land. Well crewed and directed artillery in WWI could hit a fairly well-defined area but it had to be an area. It was not going to
be a giant long range squad removal system. Finally, the carnage we get to see was all 2D and still life. None of those truisms holds in Bakhmut. I have faith that deeper trenches with duck boards will be seen soon as a case of convergent evolution, but the rest are all in the
pages of the history books. Artillery and drone delivered ordnance can target individual dug outs and if a drone has thermal vision it makes the night the deadliest part of the day. I just saw some stills of a Russian unit getting massacred by a thermal equipped drone directed
artillery strike. Ukraine has taken the night away from the Russians. It might be true both ways, but we know that the night is now hunting time for thermal drones. Imagine trying to get supplied, evac wounded, mass for an attack, to repel one or even just sleep under such
conditions. No wonder I have also seen at least 2 suicides of Russian troops there recently, both observed by Ukrainian drones. The Russians are being driven mad with despair. The battlefield is Hell and there is no way out. Russian propaganda tells them two things: if you
surrender the Ukrainians will murder and torture you (not true) but if they don't they will give you back (Wagnerites are convicted felons after all) and then we will torture and murder you. Add in starvation to the mix as well. Saw video of some mobliks finding all their food
stashed in a warehouse... Russian commanders are deliberately starving their own troops. No one can last for long under such conditions. As any of the officers you see on @MriyaReport about the importance of food, sleep, dry feet and hope. With none of these and no way out
the Russian Army is going from save your last bullet for yourself to use your next bullet on yourself. Yet despite all this publicly available evidence the Russian trolls are still claiming Bakhmut is about to fall. If any phrase ever rang as hollow I do not know what it is. The
other line of disinfo that is being pushed in part by media organizations that should know better is that Europe is mad at the US for profiteering off the war. Something along the lines of, "the US is making billions off selling weapons to Ukraine" NO! The US is spending billions
sourcing weapons for Ukraine and replenishing US stocks after giving billions to Ukraine. It is money well spent. The US for all its jacked up problems, navel gazing and division has really stepped up in support of a free people trying to stop a #GenocideOfUkrainians. I am a
proud American when it comes to this effort. I have no moral qualms about tagging @JohnBoozman, @SenTomCotton and @RepFrenchHill every day telling them send more, send better, send now. All of which will help the Russian Army shatter faster in front of Bakhmut and bring us closer
to the end of the war. Of course these same publications and dis-info actors can't be found when Russian troops loot and rob banks, when Russia profits billions off of stolen grain and manipulated oil prices. Its all BS, the Free World Stands with Ukraine and we stand together.
speaking of ill gotten gains, time to talk about that elephant sitting over there casting a shadow on those of us who are either/or giving to Ukraine and/or a #FELLA and part of #NAFO. It seems a fair number of people got scammed. Maybe she was also a victim maybe she wasn't.
and the @belwarriors. I also buy merch from @saintjavelin. Additionally @Official_NAFO has a list of trust worthy ways to give that make sure the money you part with lands up where it can help Ukraine. There is a trust worthy outlet for however you feel like giving. Don't be
scared to give, just be smart about it and use the resources you have to discern the legit from the cons. Like I said last night supporting Ukraine is not a hobby its a pledge. We all have a role to play and each thing we do matters. Maybe not much, but it matters. You matter,
There are a lot of different roles one can do as a #FELLA and part of #NAFO. Some people make wicked memes, forge FELLA's, troll Russian diplomats, host spaces... Me I am just an essayist. I give as I can but my gift is writing so that is what I can offer up every day. Many give
more and giving is the mission they self selected when joining NAFO. A few however take on the riskier jobs... fund raising. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. Like I said earlier, I trust @copesint and @WBearpJr and that is good enough for me. If @Pogggio1 is innocent and
herself a victim it will come out in the wash. I don't think all the money she raised was embezzled, something went pear shaped somewhere. Intent matters, but not as much as people think. It is either on the up and up or its not when its time to cut bait. The danger now isn't
Today's essay is for everyone who has to take time out of their bashing Russian dis-info accounts to explain why Ukraine MUST be better than Putin's goon squads running around perpetrating a #GenocideOfUkrainians. This really should not need to be said but here we are anyway.
First the Laws of War prohibit war crimes. Beginning in the mid-to-late 1800's the great powers began to formulate a series of rules and laws that would hopefully lessen the impact of war on the civilians. They were imperfect, often ignored and reflected the views where
imperialism, colonialism and wars of conquest were still acceptable. Still between 1864 and 1907 we had the First Geneva Conventions covering the sick and wounded in war and the Hauge Conventions. This is what took us into WWI and even then during that horrible war the High
Its a drab dreary morning in Arkansas, most of us are still bloated from yesterday. To my non-American friends yesterday was Thanksgiving in the US and it is our biggest feast day of the year. A people already known for over eating and indulgence go all out for this one. However
what follows that Thursday of Gluttony is a Friday of miserly yet riotous shopping. Right now at 7AM local time there are people who were running as if zombies were chasing them to be the first to lay hands on the gigazised TV hours ago. Black Friday store shopping horror stories
are epic. Thankfully now we have Amazon so that shoppers who don't want to throw elbows to buy their grandkid a toy can still throw dollars at consumerism like a lotto winner at a strip club. <--- Thats me by the way. Not the Lotto winner the person who doesn't want to throw
Today I am going to piggy back off both yesterday's essay and two people I respect but in this case disagree with. Both are probably smarter than me and at least one of them operated at the heights of military power so this essay may well be hubris on my part. I'll let you be the
judge. Yesterday was of course a brief thumbnail history of why strategic bombing doesn't work. Not working is however not the same as not killing, destroying, and causing untold misery which is why this tweet exists:
I did not hear @general_ben's actual words but I am going to proceed as the tweet is a faithful accounting. First I don't have any moral qualms about #Ukraine hitting naval facilities or airfields where missile launching platforms are located. In fact having weapons able to sink
In the 1920's and 30's there was a massive debate going on. An Italian Giullio Douhet had theorized that future wars would be won by strategic bombing. His theories gained a lot of traction. Famously Billy Mitchell and Hugh Trenchard (father of the RAF) were converts to his ideas
on the future of war. Mitchell went so far as to sink an old German battleship to "prove" the concept. Though he was accused of cheating (opening doors, no crews to do damage control etc) the ship did sink.
in that era they really thought they were on to something. Bombers of the same generation as fighters tended to be faster, could fly higher and at least on paper could defend themselves. Of course, each new generation of bomber sparked a new generation of fighter that took
You might have seen the word #Holodomor going around. It is what the world calls the last #GenocideOfUkrainians by #Russia. A quick break down. Stalin needed cash to pay for a rapid industrialization of the Soviet economy. Grain sales were a major source of foreign currency.
Outwardly facing and using useful idiots like the @nytimes' Walter Duranty played up the idea of a workers and peasants paradise all the while knowing that starvation was occurring. Inwardly, the #Russian public was shown agit prop films and propaganda portraying the Ukrainian's
as evil counter-revolutionaries who were hoarding food and deserved to be punished. There were further problems stemming from collectivization leading to poorer yields and the whole was something between 3-7 million dead. If the upper number is true it represents a greater number
