“Hospital waste comes from areas like food, electronic and paper waste, but the biggest source is clinical care…. a US study found that a single hysterectomy produced 20 pounds of waste in plastic, packaging, drapes...”
The total number of COVID hospitalization bed days in Canada from health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/ is 5,336,151 as of Nov 22 (not people - bed days).
So, we can estimate COVID hospitalizations in Canada have generated
23,585,787 kg of waste --> more than 23,000 tonnes
😱

And that’s not even waste from funerals! Check out @MoriartyLab work.
"By our estimates, as of Nov 18 there have been over 37,000 Omicron deaths in Canada, with 52% of these deaths undetected/unreported."
(Just. Since. Omicron BA.1 hit late 2021!)

And that’s not even considering greenhouse gas emissions:
The average U.S. cremation, for instance, “takes up about the same amount of energy and has the same emissions as about two tanks of gas in an average car,” Menkin says. “So, it’s not nothing.” nationalgeographic.com/science/articl…

Now, to be fair, and macabre, all the people who died from COVID would have died eventually. But perhaps front-loading the environmental impact now is not a good thing? Hopefully, our environmental impact from funerals, etc diminishes over time?

All right so the big question:
What about the waste from masks? Surely, it's better to spread disease during a pandemic, right?
I mean - gasp - the environmental impact from masks!!
Anyway, you get the point. Under no circumstances should anyone be arguing against masks for environmental reasons.
In particular, ID docs generally have zero materials management, life cycle analysis, or related eco-expertise.

If you are interested in eco-friendly masks, you can purchase a reusable elastomeric one e.g. Breathe or FloMask. And, there are even masks made from plant-based materials! (Looks like you should use a mask-brace with them, though.)

Doctors interested in working to address the climate crisis & environmental issues should get in touch with @Melissa_Lem or Cdn Assoc of Physicians for the Environment (@CAPE_ACME) cape.ca

Oh, and if a loved one does die tragically due to the astonishing mass infection experiment aided by so much disinformation regarding masks, and you are interested in greener burial options, you can check out the Green Burial Society of Canada

Please. Wear a mask.
It shows you are a good person...
who cares about the health of your fellow humans, especially tiny or vulnerable ones,
2/ Thank you very much for the invitation. Unfortunately, I am off work for the foreseeable future to the failure of every institution to stand up to public health and put measures in place to reduce COVID-19 transmission, which is proven to transmit via aerosols (airborne).
3/ As an immunocompromised parent of two children for whom I would like to live long enough to see them to adulthood, this has been a harrowing time. Due to unsafe schools, I have no reliable childcare. I have to pull my kids every day to eat lunch outdoors...
1/ Well, here is everything I can share with you regarding my complaint to Engineers & Geoscientists of BC (EGBC) against the Vancouver School Board (VSB).
Thank you to all who helped with legal fees. I will post the final accounting as soon as I receive invoice!
No parent has been able to obtain Authenticated Documents from an Engineer of Record providing the professional assurance of public health & safety to which we are legally entitled.
#COVIDisAirborne. Washing our hands will not help. Mask 'choice' is unscientific - that's not how aerosols work. Mask 'choice' is ableist bs that endangers our high risk family.
Shame @VSB39 for propping up this dangerous nonsense & abdicating your duty of care.
2/ "Staff will continue to remind students of importance of regular hand washing/hand sanitizing and of coughing/sneezing into their elbow or a tissue. We will continue to ensure hand sanitizer is available."
This is NOT going to protect my kids from COVID. It's AIRBORNE. #bced
3/ "Wearing a mask, other than what is recommended by public health, is an important personal health choice for students and families. Some staff and students will choose to wear a mask throughout the day or for certain activities. Others will choose not to wear a mask." 🤬🤬🤬
This post captured my (& many others) frustration. The masks-dont-work crowd feels like arguing with flat-earthers. @CPita3 is right - filters are everywhere!
It occurred to me that, besides ideology, maybe issue is people get solid, liquid, gas BUT don't grasp fluids. Short🧵
"In physics, a fluid is a liquid, gas, or other material that continuously deforms under an applied shear stress, or external force. They have zero shear modulus, or ... are substances which cannot resist any shear force applied to them." Wikipedia
Air moves like a fluid!
So, just like water flowing in a river, air moves all around. It can move around small solid objects, or be 'splashed' off larger ones, changing direction. It swirls like river currents.
Like a leaf in a river, air can move floating objects with it as it moves.
