💡 We have an opportunity to respond to this newly recognised danger to our human rights.
7/ Our commitment to the #UDHR even as originally written can’t be fulfilled without addressing #ageism.
⚠️ Racism, sexism, socioeconomic inequalities, and more – these are all made worse when combined with ageism, particularly when disadvantages accumulate over time.
8/ The importance of addressing #ageism can be identified throughout the #UDHR.
⚠️ For example, Articles 4 – 6: if ageism prevents us from seeing younger or older people as full persons with rights, atrocities such as slavery, torture and abuse could be easier to commit.
9/ #UDHR’s Article 7 states that ‘all are equal before the law’ and ‘entitled without any discrimination to equal protection’.
⚠️ Yet, younger and older people alike face numerous forms of age-based discrimination that are not adequately protected against by law. #AWorld4AllAges
Today is the @UN International Day of Older Persons! #UNIDOP
This year's theme is about the human rights that belong to all of us, no matter what our age.
How do we ensure all older people – now & in the future – can live with meaning & dignity?
Let's unpack it together 🧵⬇️
@UN @UN4Ageing @UNDESA @UNDESASocial @UNHumanRights @IE_OlderPersons @UNGeneva @UNFPA @NgoAgeing @UNandAgeing 1/ The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (#UDHR) is turning 75.
It's a landmark document that sets out our fundamental rights – and a promise to protect them.
But if we were the same age as the UDHR, many of us wouldn't be enjoying the rights it defines.
#UNIDOP #UDHR75
2/ Most of us can expect to live into older age. Something to celebrate!
But we don't all have access to the environments needed to maximise our extra years. 🎥 ⬇️
Protecting our rights helps us build these environments for current & future generations of older people.
1/ Today, we're thinking about data for #HealthyAgeing 💭
In New York, Member States are gathering for the @UN Statistical Commission to discuss all things data.
The @UNDecadeAgeing calls for strengthening data to accelerate its implementation. But what does this mean?
🧵⬇️
2/ To implement initiatives & policies that are effective in fostering #HealthyAgeing, we need a fuller understanding of older people's needs & contexts.
One important way to develop this understanding is by collecting meaningful & representative data about older people. 📈
3/ For example, inequities faced by older people will remain invisible if data on them are not collected.
We also can't challenge ageist assumptions of older age as inevitable decline if data on older people's contributions to society are limited.
@dienekeita (@UNFPA) provides a strong message: we must do for older people now what we want for ourselves when we are older.
#MIPAA, #MIPAA20Rome, and the @UNDecadeAgeing all show there is political will to improve the lives of older people. That will must be backed by action.
Zsuzsanna Jakab (Deputy Director-General, @WHO) is now on screen, introducing the @UNDecadeAgeing and how it supports the implementation of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (#MIPAA) in the @UNECE region.
Abuse of older people can be addressed more effectively by doing research about what causes it, how widespread it is, and what works to reduce and prevent it.
