A new @PolicyPECH study on π¨π³'s π£ fleet reviews its global operations, notably in πΈπ³π²π·π²π¬π²πΊπͺπ¨πΈπ§, and the challenges it poses to competing πͺπΊ fleets.
.@PolicyPECH highlights that π¨π³'s fleet - the world's biggest - operates globally and drives #overfishing, environmental destruction & human rights abuse.
To be credible promoting #transparency globally, πͺπΊ must push not just π¨π³, but its own π£ fleet to be more transparent and accurate in their reporting by:
.@EUAuditors also recently found that import controls are not uniform across the Union.
As a result, fish caught illegally by π¨π³βs vessels ends up on EU plates too easily, outcompeting legal π£ in the πͺπΊ.
To fight #IUU π£, import checks must be consistent & strong across the πͺπΊ
The study by @PolicyPECH aligns with the latest advice of πͺπΊπ£ advisory councils, which call on the EU to step up its engagement with China.
High sustainability standards & transparency must be applied to drive positive changes all along the supply chain. ldac.eu/images/LDAC-MAβ¦
To achieve this, resources dedicated to the implementation of the EUβs policy against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing must be reinforced.
The EU must also be able to count on its strategic allies around the world to enforce strong checks on #IllegalFishing.

Tomorrow the @EUCouncil will adopt a set of conclusions on international ocean governance and #DeepSeaMining.
Their decisions will shape the future of the #DeepSea.
EU Member States must stand against #DeepSeaMining to protect the worldβs last true wilderness from harm.
We welcome @EUCouncil steps to support stronger regulations, higher environmental standards & a precautionary principle on potential future #DeepSeaMining.
But more ambitious targets & proper commitments are needed to #DefendTheDeep from those who want to destroy it for profit.
Surprisingly, the same @EUCouncil called for a more ambitious position on #DeepSeaMining in 2020.
Yet now #EU Member States want to cut back on ambition just as #COP15 talks on new global #biodiversity targets are underway.
