🚨New paper in @Nature reveals link between #microbiome & #exercise motivation!🧠🐁

👉Provides foundational insight that could lead to dietary practices & supplements to promote exercise motivation

Video:

@hubermanlab
#dopamine

1/ Thread🧵👇
2/ The study in question is a mouse study, as you can really perform these fine mechanistic study in animal models

Data show that genetics variation among mice was a minor contributor and the variations in microbiome composition were more important for physical performance...
3/ To show the microbiome mediates the effects, they knocked out the microbiome with antibiotics in high-performer mice and the result was an impairment physical performance by 50%! (2a)

By contrast, microbiome transplant could enhance performance.
4/ Progressed to test hypothesis that motivation to exercise accounted for effect of microbiome on physical performance

Found that exercise ⬆️ dopamine levels (controls motivational state) AND exercise-induced ⬆️ in DA could be blunted w/ antibiotics to destroy microbiome
5/ Figure shows DA levels are NOT impacted in the basal state w/ antibiotic treatment but that antibiotics do prevent the rise in DA following exercise – consistent with the possibility that microbiome dysfunctioncould impact motivational states related to exercise
@hubermanlab
6/ Zooming fwd so as not to get tedious, by blocking elements of pathways or activating elements, the team demonstrated there is an axis whereby certain bugs produce metabolites that activate neurons that signal to DA motivational centers in the brain to want to exercise
7/ Specifically, the most potent gut derived metabolites were fatty acid amines, such as N-oleoylethanolamide (OEA) (5e), which – for the super nerds out there – is a lipid that acts on the endocannabinoid pathway and is structured based on oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat
8/ The scientists were even able to show that gastric infusions of (OEA) recapitulated the effects of dopamine increase and improved exercise motivation/performance, and that more OEA correlated with more running (5g)
9/ These data spell out a story showing a strong link between the microbiome and exercise motivation

By better understanding these pathways, we could create dietary protocols or probiotics that could make us want to move our bodies more, improving personal and public health
10/ Plug again for 5 min video overview & Happy Saturday!

Is fruit healthy? 🍌🍉🍇🥭🍓

Thread 🧵...

1/ Some argue most fruit has sugar. Sugar is bad. Therefore, fruit is not a health food

Others may argue that fruit is natural; therefore, universally healthy.

Both perspectives are oversimplifications...
2/ IMO, the question of fruits' healthfulness can be assessed based on primarily on 3 principles:

(i) - Nutrient density vs glycemic impact

(ii) - Metabolic profile of the consumer

(iii) - What's the "control?"
3/ Starting w/ nutrient density vs GI (or more properly GL)

Some fruits, e.g.wild blueberries, are quite dense in nutrients, with very mild glycemic impact.

Others, like apples or mango - while delicious - provide less nutrient bang for the buck, so to speak...

🚨Cool New Study!

Omega-3 fats have sex-specific impacts on lipids, LDL, HDL & TG!

Thread + video breakdown...

1/ In this new paper published in the @LipidJournal, researchers performed a Double-Blinded Randomized Crossover to see how EPA & DHA imapct lipids and mean dn women
2/ The study was a has 21 subjects each with at least 1 marker of Metabolic Syndrome

There was a 4 week run-in period, followed by 10w on 3g/d of EPA or DHA, a washout period, and then the other long-chain fatty acid. Again, order was randomized and study was double-blinded...
3/ Researchers found:

(1) EPA and DHA both ⬇️ TG.

(2) EPA and DHA both ⬆️ LDL-C/ApoB ratios, suggesting more large fluffy healthy buoyant LDL-C

1/5) IT WORKED! How I lowered by blood Mercury level by adding a Special Mayo 👇 - Thread 🧵

For background, I eat fish 1-2 times per day.

As such, my blood mercury has been running higher than ideal, usually around 13 mg/dL

#fish #mercury #mediketo #mayo
2/5) My reasons for eating fish frequently are bc I enjoy the taste and as an #ApoE4 homozygote (#Alzheimers risk gene) my understanding of the research is that the more real-food EPA/DHA I can get the better!
Paper: mdpi.com/2072-6643/13/4…
Lecture:
3/5) Front line advice for keep Mercury levels in normal range is to eat fish low on the food chain & to avoid big fish like tuna and swordfish.

For ref, a table of Mercury levels in fish. You can see, swordfish has ~77-times as much mercury as sardines

1/3) Why this headline is a load of🐩💩...

“participants who skip breakfast are more likely to develop fatal cardiovascular diseases, while those who skip lunch or dinner increase their risk of death from all causes”

Don't skip any meals?

I'll call evolution and let it know
2/3) "Those who ate less than three meals a day also tended to have unhealthy habits like smoking or drinking alcohol."

... hmm... seems like the headline could have included" "IF diet (and smoking and drinking) could actually send you to an early grave"
3/3) Then the mike drop... "Jennifer Aniston is among the celebs who practice intermittent fasting."

She's 53 right? Yes... clearly premature aging.

Bring me lunch at noon and save my telomeres! 🧬

Should you EAT BUGS 🐜 🦗🐛?

A thread 🧵! Please read and comment 🙏🏻

1/ The topic of bug eating,
or entomophagy, has arisen more and more on social media in recent weeks & months

It’s unfortunately become a polarized topic that I want to address…
2/ Why do I want to address it?

Bc interestingly, I find that people that r pro animal protein consumption tend to be very anti-bug, whereas those that are more plant-based tend to be more pro-bug

As bugs are animals this would seem a contradiction - and one that is revealing
3/ First, let’s talk nutrients.

Bugs provide a high quality source of protein, on par with other animal proteins like beef. A compare, and contrast is provided below. (And chapulines take the cake for protein density)

1/ At Thanksgiving dinner, a relative who struggles with #obesity -- like too many in this world -- asked my opinion on the Ozempic (Semaglutide), the GLP-1 receptor agonist that's being prescribed more and more for weight loss

My 4-point reply... 🧵👇 Image
2/ Point (1) = Lifestyle > Drugs

#Obesity and #diabetes are lifestyle related diseases ideally treated by targeting the root cause, i.e. lifestyle.

Drugs have their place in treatment, but as the cherry on top of the proverbial sundae, not the sundae itself. Image
3/ This doesn't mean lifestyle change is easy or that it works first time 4every1

Lifestyle change can be difficult bc of the confusing/low-quality nature of standard nutrition advice (e.g. eat less more more)

and bc of our modern food environment & social pressures
