15 yrs after her assassination, today, 27 Dec 2007, I want to come clean on the organized smear campaign that intensified in the lead up to #BenazirBhutto's murder, a campaign in which I inadvertently joined. Which is why she was going to see me at 10 pm that night. /1
I received a call from Dr Asif Khan, #BenazirBhutto's quiet operator in #Islamabad and a friend to ex-PM @RPAPPP around 4 pm to reconfirm a meeting with her at Bilawal House. I was at state-run PTV, in a suit, making cuts to my weekly show, ready to leave for the meet at 10 pm./2
I was in the editing room at around 6:30 pm when a media liaison offcr frm Pres #Musharraf's office dropped by, opened door, & said, 'Did you hear? My info from a source at hospital confirms she's dead.' There was silence. He left. I checked the time, thought about my meeting. /3
My show on PTV, Worldview From Islamabad, became one of the outlets that vilified #BenazirBhutto, encouraged #Musharraf not to make a deal w/ her. That's how I began my monolog one evening just when @Shahidmasooddr was going live on @geonews_urdu w/ her+@AsifAliZardari in DXB. /4
#Musharraf wanted to work with #BenazirBhutto but several strong lobbies in his Govt were deadly opposed. People like me were led to believe that she was returning with a 'foreign agenda.'

In Nov 2007, multiple Pakistani news outlets carried my article, published on my personal website, that revealed #Musharraf and/or #BenazirBhutto faced possible assassination. Here's an excerpt ⤵️. Read but remember that I disagree today with the context I gave here then: /6
On 3 Dec 2007, Robert Novak (of @ValeriePlame fame) wrote a column in @washingtonpost, linking me & my article to #Pakistan's spy agency, which was incorrect. [My analysis quoted by Novak turned out many years later to be inaccurate. But his take on #BenazirBhutto had merit.] /7
On 7 Dec 2007, an honorable judge in the full bench of Lahore High Court, probing a case, referenced my article on the possibility of #Musharraf and/or #BenazirBhutto assassination. This reflected heightened tensions among Pakistanis in the weeks preceeding Bhutto's murder. /8
I was surprised when @RPAPPP's friend Dr Asif Khan called days before the assassination saying #BenazirBhutto wanted to see me despite my criticism & #Musharraf-sympathetic views. She was a visionary who could rise above pettiness and focus on #Pakistan./9
I often think about that meeting with #BenazirBhutto at Bilawal House in #Islamabad at 10 pm on 27 Dec 2007 that never happened, the sudden turn of events, and the smear campaign against her in the days before her assassination, painting her as a "foreign agent." /10
#BenazirBhutto's violent exit from #Pakistan's politics plunged the national discourse, and reduced the quality of leadership and wisdom available to the nation. Takes time to build credible political figures+institutions; can't be replaced overnight.

PM @CMShehbaz congratulations #Pakistan's spy chief for success in #ISI's "most complex intelligence operation" in intelligence service's recent history.
What did the ISI exactly do? Some details are listed in this #thread. /1
#Pakistan's premier spy agency, the #ISI captured wanted #Balochistan terrorism commander Gulzar Imam Shambay in a sophisticated intelligence operation that spanned more than a year and involved cooperation from eleven spy agencies in eleven states. /2
Commander Gulzar Imam Shambay's brother was a suicide bomber in a spectacular attack on two #Pakistan Army bases in #Balochistan in Feb 2022, where terrorists used explosions followed by incursions aiming to taking hostages to create a media spectacle. /3
Evidence reviewed by investigators shows #ImranKhan masterminded organized and preplanned arson & vandalism against state+military buildings across #Pakistan. Khan incited hate against State+Mil for months; #PTI media wing joined; party executed attack. /1 #BlackDay9May2023
On May 12, law enforcement sources I spoke with confirmed they have seen evidences that the arson and vandalism on 9 May 2023 was preplanned and that #PTI preplanned the attacks under direct orders from #ImranKhan.
#Pakistan law enforcement suspected as far back as March 2023 that #ImranKhan is planning street violence using radicalized members of #PTI whom he successfully turned against the state and the military by mixing extremism and anti-West incitement. /3
@MoeedNj Dear Moeed, you're an intelligent man trapped by this mafioso cult under Imran Khan, just like my friend Arshad was. Don't trust them with anything. Stay safe. Pakistani govt & military writings are easy to catch. I never done that. Pakistani CivMil media managers are ... /1
@MoeedNj ..hopeless anyway. This is my information gathering work, as a lifelong investigative journalist. If you read my tweet again, you'll see I'm actually nudging them to share information, bcz they are not. I'm urging them to make info that I referenced public. /2
@MoeedNj I'm a little disappointed that, knowing my work and experience, you'd think I use writings of Info Ministry or ISPR. We both know the limits of our state media. I did not operate under those confines even when I worked for PTV under both civilian & military govts. /3
Authorities in #Pakistan are yet to release the full details of a high-level probe that involved close to a dozen intelligence agencies that uncovered a plan that #ImranKhan approved to storm military buildings, bases, and officer houses after his arrest, which was expected. /1
The plan, allegedly approved by #ImranKhan, was based on ignoring court hearings in corruption cases that would naturally result in arrest, which then will be used to divert national attention against the military, which has refused to help Khan become PM like it did in 2018. /2
The plot links key aides of #ImranKhan in his #PTI party to planning attacks on military installations. If ever investigators' findings are made public, this could emerge as the first plan of its kind to engage #Pakistan Army in a civil war type conflict by a political party. /3
#Pakistan's police and military did not open fire when hundreds of young men stormed and vandalized Army & Govt buildings; a planned bloodbath on #Pakistan streets, a brainchild of #ImranKhan and some of his #PTI party aides. It's not over yet. Khan is pushing for a civil war./1
In a statement, #Pakistan's military patted itself on the back for not falling in #ImranKhan & #PTI's trap. But it faces a bigger challenge: legions of young Pakistanis radicalized by Khan's messaging: that the state is a Western vassal & that Khan is a savior from corruption. /2
#Pakistan urgently needs to end a decade-long free reign of #ImranKhan's messaging: a lethal mixture of conspiracy theories, disinformation, and religion. A generation of Pakistanis require de-radicalization and restoration of faith in the state and the system. /3
#ImranKhan's political story is complex. He is a source of tension since his launch in 2011 in a feat of political engineering to sideline two largest parties #PMLN+#PPP; failed as PM, messed up #Pakistan's economy+foreign policy. Now turns anti-military. wsj.com/articles/forme…

After 2019, #ImranKhan relaunched himself as a religious cult. Clips of his followers comparing Khan to the Prophet and other Islamic figures abound. Fans call him Murshid, a supreme leader. Khan recently referenced his wife receiving instructions from supernatural powers.

Imran Khan was arrested in a real estate corruption case today. But he faces several other cases: sale of state gifts, a tree plantation project, a metro bus project, party foreign funding, and his American daughter's case.
