Pervaiz Musharraf made some choices in the beginning that contrasted sharply with the Zia era. He opened up cellular phones and TV channels. He made a point about highlighting his Turkey experience, met with politicians like Ajmal Khattak and referenced Faiz. By contrast later on Image
His early cabinet, with the exception of the KP belt, made some surprising choices from the NGO sector with appointing Zubeida Jalal and the late Omer Asghar Khan.
His other appointments from Balochistan included Dr. Malik Kasi and as Governor CJ Amir ul Mulk Mengal
In Punjab and Sindh he co-opted people like Shahid Kardar and Hamida Khuhro. Behind the scenes power was with the army monitoring teams and the agencies that were primarily targeting PMLN. In KP, which had PMLN was either the 1st or 2nd biggest party was shattered as Q was formed

Aman ki Asha brigade and Congressis like Shashi Tharoor are more upset with #PervezMusharraf death than ordinary Pakistanis most of whom hate him. That guy was a bloody butcher who has the blood of 500 Indian Soldiers on his hand courtesy Kargil.
Musharraf was openly proud of the fact that Pakistan became a terror adda during his reign, and sheltered Osama Bin Laden, but yeah he praised Dhoni's locks during some cricket match, oh so cute. This Aman Ki Asha brigade are the biggest bunch of jokers ever.
It's ok Mushy loved Dhoni's long locks, visited Taj Mahal, we miss him so much.

15 yrs after her assassination, today, 27 Dec 2007, I want to come clean on the organized smear campaign that intensified in the lead up to #BenazirBhutto's murder, a campaign in which I inadvertently joined. Which is why she was going to see me at 10 pm that night. /1
I received a call from Dr Asif Khan, #BenazirBhutto's quiet operator in #Islamabad and a friend to ex-PM @RPAPPP around 4 pm to reconfirm a meeting with her at Bilawal House. I was at state-run PTV, in a suit, making cuts to my weekly show, ready to leave for the meet at 10 pm./2
I was in the editing room at around 6:30 pm when a media liaison offcr frm Pres #Musharraf's office dropped by, opened door, & said, 'Did you hear? My info from a source at hospital confirms she's dead.' There was silence. He left. I checked the time, thought about my meeting. /3

We often think the military is one big brain that thinks collectively. The fact is that there are always different groups within the Army that voice dissent but the nature of the institution means that once the Chief takes a decision, everyone falls behind it. However, when 1/n
the appointment of a new chief is around the corner, things become as political as you would expect in a Pakistani setting. Lobbying the political govt through connections is often at play in these times. #Musharraf was known to have lobbied for himself through Gen Iftikhar, 2/n
brother of Ch Nisar Ali Khan. In recent times when Bajwa was in the run for Chief, a few of his colleagues ran a smear campaign against him on social media highlighting his Ahmedi faith, and even releasing questionable videos with a similar looking dude. 3/n

The tragic and historic floods have created immense challenges for the state and the nation. But they have also created an opportunity for #Pakistan to adjust parts of its foreign policy to focus on prosperity and opportunities for Pakistani citizens. /1
The intl response to the tragic flooding helped #Pakistan re-strengthen ties with key economic+security partners, esp in Mideast+West; states that stepped up again to help in difficulty. Time to expand on this; avoid policy overthink that leads 🇵🇰 to miss opportunities, like.. /2

For history, let me set the record straight on this interview I did in 2012 for a news website with ex-#ISI chief late LtGen Retd Hameed Gul. He personally liked me but also knew that I supported many of the political ideas of former President Gen. #Musharraf. /1 @MAbdullahGul
When LtGen. Gul in this clip said to me, "Why don't you understand?", I stopped recording a couple of minutes later and asked him bluntly, "Was Gen. Musharraf a traitor?" based on what LtGen. Hameed Gul was saying here. He took a long few seconds, gazing at the floor. /2
LtGen Hameed Gul took his time thinking, expressionless. It was a long silence. Then he raised his head and firmly said, "No." Calmer now, he then went on to explain, off-record, that he disagreed politically with President Musharraf but that Gen. Musharraf was not a traitor. /3

#Pakistan bans an Islamist party behind violent anti-#France protests that crippled normal life in major cities this week. Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan #TLP demanded expulsion of #French ambassador. Bold and unexpected move by PM #ImranKhan government.

#TLPNationWideProtest
The story, first reported by @AzazSyed, represents a welcome departure for PM #ImranKhan's #Pakistan government. Blacklisting #TLP will also help improve his govt's ties with #France which deteriorated last year:

#Pakistan's welcome decision to blacklist #TLP after violent anti-#France riots should lead to some introspection among Pakistani politicians & the public (yet to happen), starting with: Why is it that Pakistan is the *only* Muslim nation seeing this type of violence?

#Kuwait's young foreign minister @anmas71 is back in #Pakistan for the first time in 16 yrs (I met him back then). This interesting relationship spans military+strategic issues (#Afghanistan #Iran #Iraq #oil), & a forgotten attempt to save a Pakistani premier from execution. /1
#Kuwait helped #Pakistan withstand international sanctions after the 1998 nuclear tests (with KSA+UAE); was one of top 5 aid givers (with #SaudiArabia #UAE #US #EU) after #Kashmir earthquake 2005. And remains a key oil supplier (along with #KSA). /2

In 2007 during #Musharraf’s #Emergency I was invited by my alma mater in US to come & speak about it. This was a time when Musharraf Govt sent a delegation with Kashmala Tariq as part of it to promote it’s stance. My talk went well. There was a clear divide between US Govt’s 1/
& US academia’s stance towards Musharraf & his travesties. As it turned out I was then invited by several other universities/other platforms to speak & did my best to push back against Musharraf’s illegal policies. A day or so before my departure back home some lawyer friends 2/
urgently got in contact/advised that I stay back as an FIR had been lodged against me/3 fellow #LUMS profs for inciting students against govt. This was the initial stage of Emergency when civil society protestors were being actively clamped down on. The FIR made for hilarious 3/

A special court in Pakistan sentenced the former ruler #Musharraf to death for high treason. In this thread, I will recall history and will try to figure out the contributions of a leader who ruled this country for like 10 years. #DGISPR #Musharraf
#Musharraf and #NawazSharif presided over Pakistan's nuclear tests in May 1998, conducted in response to similar Indian tests.
Pakistan's economic stability was presided by #Musharraf and brought up lines of foreign credit that fueled a bankrupt economy.

Slow afternoon.
Let me pass this time by doing a short photo thread on my new favourite hashtag - #RunawayPakArmy!
Apparently, two majors have been removed from Pak Army for 'misconduct'.
Timing of removal is rather unfortunate, though - when they're getting pounded on the LoC!

Two mistakes:

1) When you blame the military for every vice & problem in #Pakistan, you are hands down the worst analyst/political commentator in the world.

It’s like you don’t know abt the corruption & extra-judicial killings of the 80s & 90s.
During the 80s & 90s, #journalists, #police, & #bureaucrats were bought and sold at the behest of #NawazSharif & #BenazirBhutto.

#ShehbazSharif maintained his own killing squad to take out political rivals.

What rank in the military did they hold?
During the 80s & 90s, judges were removed because the political leadership didn’t like their decisions.

CJP Sajjad Ali Shah was removed, even though he asked the military to help him. #PMLN stormed the #SupremeCourt.

Which General ordered this?
