Azerbaijan & Armenia: A brief 🧵 on why the peace has failed
44-day war ends in 2020 & #Azerbaijan immediately offers #Armenia to sign a peace treaty based on, inter alia, mutual recognition of territorial integrity, inviolability of borders & renunciation of terr. claims. 1/8
High-level talks follow, Armenia🇦🇲 accepts Azerbaijan’s🇦🇿 5 principles for a peace treaty.
Talks on delimitation & demarcation of the state border are held. 2/8
On Oct. 7, 2022 🇦🇿 & 🇦🇲 commit to recognizing each other’s territorial integrity for the first time in 30 yrs.
@NikolPashinyan hints at Armenia’s readiness to recognize Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan.
Despite hiccups, the sides are VERY CLOSE to signing the peace treaty. 3/8
Initial contacts between Azerbaijani authorities & reps of ethnic Armenians living in Karabakh are very productive, showing the possibility of 🇦🇿-🇦🇲 peaceful coexistence and reintegration of Armenians as citizens of Azerbaijan with full rights & freedoms. 4/8
ENTER @RubenVardanyan_, an oligarch billionaire sanctioned by #Ukraine, who suddenly renounces his Russian citizenship, moves to Karabakh & is appointed “state minister” of the illegal regime.
Under Vardanyan’s orders all contacts with Azerbaijani authorities are cut off. 5/8
Armenia distances itself from its statements re recognition of Azerbaijan’s🇦🇿 territorial integrity, tries to change the negotiation format & thus disrupts EU-mediated peace process. 6/8
Consequently, peace talks are halted, peace process is stalled.
Meanwhile, Armenia & criminal regime in Karabakh intensify the illegal use of #LachinRoad delivering arms, soldiers & sabotage groups to Karabakh, planting #landmines in 🇦🇿 & smuggling out 🇦🇿 natural resources. 7/8
On Dec. 12, 2022 Azerbaijani environmental activists begin protests on #LachinRoad demanding the end to the illegal exploitation of Azerbaijan’s gold & copper resources by Vardanyan & Co, as well as the illegal, non-humanitarian use of the road. 8/8

Letzte Nacht war es an der Staatsgrenze zwischen Aserbaidschan und Armenien nicht ruhig. Armenien führte großangelegte Provokationen in mehreren Richtungen durch. 1/
Just read the @sfchronicle article by @RepAdamSchiff & @RepSpeier. First, during decades in Congress, these esteemed politicians have never said a single word about illegal occupation of 20% of #Azerbaijan’s lands by #Armenia & 1 million forcibly displaced #Azerbaijanis. 1/13
Invasion, total ethnic cleansing & nearly 30-year-long occupation of #Azerbaijan’s sovereign territory by #Armenia was well-documented, incl. by @UN Security Council resolutions and successive US administrations, starting with #Clinton Administration. 2/13
Brutal massacres against #Azerbaijani civilian population by Armenian troops, incl. the #Khojaly Genocide of 1992, which @HRW called the #largest massacre in the conflict#, are also well documented. 3/13
Thus a 27-year-long illegal occupation of #Kalbajar came to an end. Tens of thousands of forcibly displaced #Azerbaijani residents of Kalbajar will finally be able to return home.
The invasion and total ethnic cleansing of #Kalbajar by #Armenia in early April 1993 was one of the most crucial moments and darkest chapters in the #Armenia-#Azerbaijan conflict.
