THREAD: If we analyze declassified documents from the Central Intelligence Agency, we can learn quite a bit about the US role in the historical development of Ukrainian Nationalism.
The current #Ukraine/#Russia warstarted here — a long, long time ago.
In a declassified CIA document outlining the details of Operation Belladonna, we can see the US had already made contact with #NazisInUkraine who were keen to ally with the US against the #USSR, primarily through development of the Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council (UHVR).
Later on in the document, we can see the known affiliations of the UHVR that the CIA was aware of, specifically the #Bandera & #Melnyk factions of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), in addition to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA).
The document goes on to outline the scale of the UHVR apparatus, noting how many countries its members are stationed in and the extent of suggested reports.
Note the last paragraph: this CIA project involved #Canada as well — a hotbed of Banderite immigrants after WW II.
As the CIA expanded its operations in #Ukraine, additional projects came to light:
Project AERODYNAMIC (formerly CARTEL, ANDROGEN, AECARTHAGE), which operated 1949-1970 before being reclassified under Project named QRDYNAMIC in 1970 and finally QRDYNAMIC/QRPLUMB until 1991.
There are thousands of declassified CIA documents that contain sensitive information regarding these project names and the activities involved.
A treasure trove of United States history that seems to have gone under the radar of the mainstream media. (Hmm, wonder why?)
Just to start, here’s 25 pages of formerly secret CIA docs on #Ukraine operations from the 1950’s:
These operations were coordinated via Washington, Vienna, and Munich, using the remnants of #Nazi German intelligence (with a mighty assist from Britain’s MI6).
As these reports reveal, the CIA was well aware these Ukrainian militias were #Nazis, war criminals, murderers, and traitors to their country (#USSR) — and the CIA DID NOT CARE.
The document has a detailed analysis of the crazy-quilt patchwork of Ukrainian resistance organizations, names and positions of leadership, locations, and contacts (mostly in former #Nazi Germany):
The CIA was rather surprised to discover the Ukrainian resistance movement had quite a global network!
Notice that this document from the early 1950’s, the CIA had no Ukrainian nationalist operatives in the United States— but that would soon change.
The Agency started bringing them into the US around 1953, starting with Allen Dulles’ personally recruiting Mykola Lebed.
Although they certainly had no friends in Soviet #Russia, the Ukrainian #Nazi nationalists did have friends in high places at the Vatican.
From the very start of the US/#Ukraine love affair in 1945, the Ukrainian nationalists were begging for funding, arms, and support in their quest to overthrow the government of the #SovietUnion.
At the time, the US was hesitant. the Soviets had proven a formidable force in WWII
In the 21st Century, however, the US and its Western allies seem to think that regime change in #Russia is an idea who’s time has finally come.
The CIA admits in this plan memo that they placed secret agents undercover in the International Red Cross and other humanitarian aid orgs in the war-torn regions of #USSR.
These were very high risk missions. Agents were given suicide pills 💊 to take if caught by the #Soviets.
The CIA brought #Nazi war criminal Mykola Lebed to the US and set him up running the “Prolog Publishing Company” in NYC, an Agency front.
Soviet intelligence was not fooled by this ruse. KGB knew exactly what was going on…
Even though these CIA documents were declassified nearly 20 years ago, certain parts are still redacted in regards to funding, making it difficult for historians to follow the money… 🧐
The CIA had a variety of cryptonyms for their Ukrainian operatives. For example:
Although this thread 🧵 only covers a miniscule portion of declassified documents from the CIA, it is important to note that these projects define half a century of support for Ukrainian nationalism, and there are still thousands more to analyze.
The documents referenced in this thread were declassified under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act of 1998, and were not made available to the public until the early 2000’s.
On February 22, 1972 the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine hijacked Lufthansa flight 649, demanding a $5 million ransom for the release of 192 onboard.
The skyjackers also had a celebrity hostage: 19 year-old Joseph Kennedy, son of #RFK — their human bargaining chip.
Young Kennedy had been touring India with his uncle and aunt, Senator and Mrs. Edward M. Kennedy.
The Senator's wife, Joan, had accompanied Joseph to New Delhi while her husband returned to the United States, but left India ahead of her nephew.
Joe boarded the plane alone.
The PFLP hijackers seized the plane about an hour after it took off from New Delhi, around 1 a.m.
Bombay air control authorities said they received this message from the plane: “Call us victorious Jidda. If you call us Lufthansa, we won't answer you.” ✈️
When he was arrested after the #RFK assassination, one of Sirhan’s appellate lawyers says there was a newspaper clipping in Sirhan’s pocket that discussed the incongruity of Kennedy’s advocacy for the oppressed while also supporting Israel over Palestine. bentley.umich.edu/news-events/ma…
Sirhan’s friend and appellate attorney says he cannot be certain there was not some sort of conspiracy, but has little doubt Sirhan shot Kennedy. “Sirhan never said there was somebody else,” Jabara insists.
The official motive for Sirhan’s murder of #RFK was “anti-#Zionism.”
Sirhan blamed his murderous rage on trauma he had suffered as a child in Palestine.
At age 4 he witnessed the bombing of Damascus Gate, the death of his older brother, a man disemboweled by a bomb and the family was forced to relocate after Israel was created in 1948.
Nazi Germany waged an extensive propaganda campaign to spread Nazi ideology in the Arab world.
University of Maryland Prof. Jeffrey Herf and American University Prof. Richard Breitman discuss how Nazi ideology still lingers in the 21st Century.
Prof. Breitman served as director of historical research for the Nazi War Criminal Records Interagency Working Group, which helped to bring about declassification of more than eight million pages of U.S. government records under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act.
If some of these talking points sound familiar today, now you know where they originated…
According to an April 25, 1966 Tom Wicker article in the New York Times (“CIA: Maker of Policy, or Tool?), President #Kennedy vowed privately to an aide after the Bay of Pigs incident in Cuba, that he would “splinter the CIA in 1000 pieces and scatter it to the winds.”
#JFK didn’t complete his mission to fully destroy the CIA (some believe the Agency got him first) — but here’s what he DID do.
In June 1961, two months after the Bay of Pigs — he issued National Security Action Memos (NSAM) 55 and 57.
NSAM 55 called for the Joint Chiefs of Staff, not the CIA, to be his primary military advisors.
NSAM 57 declared “any large paramilitary operation wholly or partly covert… is properly the primary responsibility of the Department of Defense with the CIA in a supporting role.”
#RFKJr grew up in a family that strongly supported #Israel. He says he was “shocked” when his kids came home from college with views of Israel as an evil, apartheid state.
No matter what side you take, I hope you’ll listen to RFK argue his position.
It is important to understand the history of why generations of Democrats (and Republicans) have supported Israel.
It all started in 1944, when both parties adopted planks in their platforms advocating for a Jewish state in Palestine.
A fascinating story that Benjamin Netanyahu’s father played a key role in. Read this thread 🧵…
