We are #LIVE from #Philadelphia covering an apparent public community meeting about new redevelopment plans for FDR Park in South Philly hosted by the authors of the plan. Residents who planned to speak against the redevelopment are not being allowed in. twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
There is a security guard at the door of the Grand Yesha Ballroom in South Philly asking what side people are on before allowing them inside the apparent public comment meeting.
A community member shows the only green space in the area and explains how the redevelopment plan is to replace part of the area with AstroTurf.
Community members are speaking in opposition to the redevelopment plan because they say it will lead to more pollution of the area and may also worsen climate change by depleting the amount of trees and nature with AstroTurf.
About 20 minutes ago, a few residents got pushed out the door of the ballroom after being told they could enter the community meeting.
In September 2022, private contractors destroyed large swaths of the meadows, and Unicorn Riot found indications of intensive herbicide use in large areas of the wetland in #Philly. unicornriot.ninja/2022/south-phi…
The community meeting tonight is the first meeting where Philly residents had an opportunity to share their thoughts on the redevelopment plan of FDR Park.
The lack of transparency in the redevelopment plan has also been brought up by opponents. A resident says the community meeting tonight is "a huge farce, a huge disappointment."
The security guard at the front door did not allow our on-the-ground reporter into the community meeting.
We've been told by people who were able to get inside, that there wasn't much of a dialogue and moreso just showing information about the redevelopment plan. The World Cup coming to the city is also being mentioned as a possible reason for the plan.
"They're claiming there are going to be more meetings, but they're not going to pause the destruction between then and now," said a resident who enjoyed the meadows during the pandemic.
Another resident says the meadows shouldn't be covered with micro plastics aka AstroTurf. They had a sign that read, "This Shit Sucks!"
Another resident says they don't want the city "plowing all the wetlands for soccer fields."
"We want honesty," said a resident who was able to go inside the community meeting. They said how the informative materials inside didn't mention the pollution that will be increased due to the plan.
Our reporter is speaking to Rep. Regina Young (D-185) asking to be let in to the meeting. She said we cannot be let in, but there is another upcoming meeting that will be virtual. She says she doesn't know the plan and didn't help create it.

NEW: Prisoners in Greece: Hunger Strike as a Weapon
Responding to the Greek government’s continuous attack on prisoners’ rights, inmates have waged 7 hunger strikes in prisons across Greece over the last three years—many of which have been successful. 🧵 unicornriot.ninja/2023/prisoners…
According to Greek prisoners and their supporters, authorities target certain incarcerated people and challenge their rights, rewrite laws which they’ve seemingly chosen not to follow themselves, and have made a consistent practice of transferring prisoners vindictively. ↕️
On Jan. 10, 2023, 10 Turkish & Kurdish hunger striking prisoners were released. Before that, the last prisoner to go on a strike in Greece was Thanos Hatziagelou. Others included: Vasilis Dimakis & Kostas Sakkas ['20], Dimitris Koufontinas ['21] & Giannis Michailidis ['22]. ↕️
Unicorn Riot chatted with Kristofer Goldsmith, the founder of a nonprofit called the “Task Force Butler Institute” which is recruiting U.S. military veterans to monitor fascists and far-right hardliner movements around the country.

Memorial for the forest defender killed by police at Findley Plaza in Little Five Points, Atlanta, GA this evening. A small piece of cardboard reading in all caps "DEFEND THE FOREST" leans against a basket near flowers and lit candles. A few people in the foreground kneel.
A "Blue Lives Don't Matter" sticker affixes a city sign and two people light candles at an alter encircling the base of a lamp post at the memorial in Atlanta, #Georgia.
The memorial turned into a march as gatherers decided to hold space for the forest defender in the streets of Atlanta.
#BreakingNews A protester was shot and killed by police Wednesday morning, January 18, in the midst of a multi-jurisdictional raid on the Atlanta Forest, also known as the Weelaunee Forest, in DeKalb County, southeast of Atlanta.

Today a demonstration against the eviction of Lützerath started in Keyenberg, where a group of climate activists have moved their camp. Earlier this morning, climate activists occupied an excavator machine in the nearby Inden open pit coal mine, shutting down operations for hours
A small group of activists with a banner attempted to walk towards the edge of the mine, some 900 feets away. They were quickly turned back by police officers, who walked with the demo in large numbers.
The demo, led by a sound system truck, headed south on the L12 road and ended at a site near the edge of the Garzweiler II coal mine where greenpeace staged a few trailers. An organizer then read solidarity messages over the loud speaker from activist groups in other countries.

#Germany: Occurring last week, the large police operation to evict activists occupying the village of Lützerath lasted several days. The occupiers were seeking to prevent the authorities from destructing the village to expand a coal mine. [Videos] unicornriot.ninja/2023/police-ev…
#EndeGelände: Climate justice activists have been occupying a large coal excavator at RWE's Inden open pit mine for over an hour now.
The Inden mine site is about 145 km (90 miles) from #Lützerath, where coal-mine resistance put the #climatecrisis back in the news last week.
