Having trouble saying no & creating boundaries?

Excellent webinar w/ @LRWeingart co-author of @thenoclub

🚺more likely to be asked to do Non-Promotable Tasks
➡️Every YES is a no to something else
➡️Be strategic when deciding

#WomenInMedicine #MedTwitter #MedEd
1/
What to take into consideration when deciding:

➡️What is the ask?
➡️Who is asking you?
➡️Can you drop something else to make room for this?
➡️Are there adequate resources to succeed?
➡️Does this align w/your goals?

2/
Why does this matter?
➡️Women do more non-promotable tasks than men
➡️Women can be penalized for declining compared to men bc it goes against societal expectations
➡️Can lead to ⬆️stress/burnout, unappreciated, withdrawn
3/
How can we be more equitable?

➡️Awareness of 🚺 getting asked to do more service tasks

✅Fix the system
➡️Don’t overburden underrepresented groups
➡️Reassign/redistribute
➡️Assign tasks strategically/equitably
➡️Recognize value of all work

Spent the evening facilitating a virtual bookclub meeting with @WUSTLmed student AMWA group. Their chosen book below

Really thoughtful discussion about the #genderbias patterns and strategies

Some key takeaways below
#WomenInMedicine #MedEd #MedTwitter
1/4
Gender bias patterns

➡️Prove it again
🚺 judged on accomplishments
🚹 judged on potential
🔑⬇️stretch roles

🚺don’t apply until meet 100% qualifications
🚹apply if meet 60%
🔑 Missed opportunities

🎯Keep list of accomplishments, take a leap, form group to celebrate wins
2/
Gender bias patterns cont’d

➡️Tightrope
Too nice-> not respected
Too assertive-> not liked

Words matter
Pushy-> Persuasive
Aggressive -> Assertive
Emotional -> Passionate
🔑Check your biases

Written words matter in LOR
🔑Focus on accomplishments not only personality

#Tweetorial on best practices for #residency interviews

⭐️This year there will be some nuanced challenges of virtual interviewing⭐️

So it will be even more important to be intentional about #interview practices

#MedEd #MedTwitter #MedStudentTwitter
1/
Since the pros/cons of virtual interviews has been written extensively by others including @jbcarmody in his blog post below, I won’t cover it here
2/
What do we hope to learn about applicants during interviews?

🎯Get to know the applicant beyond what’s in the file
🎯Part of the holistic review
⭐️Communication skills
⭐️Professional interests
⭐️Goals, values, aspirations

AND give them a chance to learn about the program
