The impact is huge and diverse! People living with PCOS find it challenging to navigate through the bias that distorts research, diagnosis, and treatment. According to research, PCOS is fast becoming a modern epidemic, especially in Asia.
So what is it? PCOS is a common endocrine disorder that affects people with ovaries, with 20-25% womxn in India and around 1 in 10 womxn worldwide affected by it.

I am looking into ways to have my name on the diploma to be 'Abhinav Priyanka Sharma'. My wife @priyankaitkar9 has contributed equally towards this degree emotionally. Without her love & support it would be incredibly hard to find the courage to keep going when I hit rock bottom.
My parents never went to college but made sure I had the best education possible. Even if that meant keeping me in the city away from them since the age of 5. They have invested their entire life emotionally and financially to my education. Hope I can give back as much as I can.

1/Had an awful #toxicmasculinity @lyft experience that exemplified why culture matters so much when building a business and customer loyalty. Driver picked me up and then two other passengers for shared ride. I inquired the order of stops and mine was next destination.
2/Found out destination of other passengers and informed @lyft driver that his route was going in opposite direction of both passenger stops. Asked if he could reroute back to main road which would have been a 7 minute drive direct line on one road to my stop.
3/@lyft driver started complaining of my request and informed me he would not be paid if he veered from exact GPS route. I shared my experience that that policy was only for pickups to ensure no detour and efficiency of all passenger pickups.

Add in a late start to fellowship, and then 2 years of #miscarriage, #recurrentpregnancyloss and secondary #infertility. Those experiences made me a much better person/doctor/leader/human being, but let's be honest, weren't great for my early career leadership development. 2/7
Early #workingmomlife was a blur of hard work, sleep deprivation, disenfranchised grief, and lessons learned. The transformation was happening, but I couldn't see it. Not until I landed in a more supportive environment. #womeninmedicine 3/7

Thanks to #medtwitter for helping me deliver a powerful message at #CombiSIG19 on #genderbias. Here's what I said:

1. It's real. End of story. I gave a slide with tons of references, including from @JulieSilverMD @arghavan_salles @TheLancet ImageImage
But people like stories more than studies, so I also included an anecdote - a peer review of a textbook proposal. It was a rejection. Turns out, the publisher didn't agree with the critiques. #womeninmedicine Image
And I illustrated the potential ripple effect had I lost this opportunity not for lack of academic legitimacy, but for having a new job in a new city with a new baby.
