Activists from SR Africa took action in different countries to demand climate action, specifically 1) to halt new oil & gas projects across the continent, 2) invest in clean energy systems, 3) pay up for losses in ecosystems & culture due to extractivism. ✊ #LossAndDamage (1/13)
This campaign happens in the midst of the development of major oil and gas projects in Africa, such as @EACOP_ and the Morroco-Nigeria pipeline. ☠️ (2/13)
The 'Morocco-Nigeria pipeline' is an extension of the West African Pipeline that would make it the world's longest offshore gas pipeline. It will cost about $25 billion dollars which could be invested in clean energy instead of fueling the #ClimateCrisis, (3/13)
and would be finished no earlier than 2046...when the world should be carbon neutral, and not burning fossil fuels. Natural gas is a fossil fuel, and its use from its extraction, processing and combustion is harming people and ecosystems. #ClimateEmergency (4/13)
This project would bring gas to western African countries but also to Europe: countries in the global North therefore also have responsibility in the development of this project. (5/13)
Similarly, @EACOP_ aims at building a huge oil pipeline across Africa, not only representing a climate bomb but also forcing displacements of people, potentially contaminating water sources and destroying ecosystems. The greediness of @TotalEnergies knows no limit. (6/13)
@EACOP_ would release more CO2 than the united footprint of Uganda and Tanzania. It received a strong resistance (@stopEACOP) and some insurers already dropped the project (theenergymix.com/2022/12/01/two…). (7/13)
The EU parliament also adopted a resolution condemning human rights violations & the risks for ecosystems, yet the project is still ongoing. 💀
And these projects are not the only ones endangering African cultures & ecosystems for capitalist profit... (8/13)
@Shell's Bonga North project, @Equinor and @Shell's LNG oil project in Tanzania, @bp_plc's gas project in Mozambique... many others will start in the next years, years that should be marked by radical shifts in our energy systems. (9/13)
Between the 28th & 30th of January, scientists took high risk action in Uganda, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo to protest against these projects. Taking direct action in Africa may be extremely risky as police and governments are known to be brutal on activists. (10/13)
Other African countries keep mobilizing! People are resisting because the science is clear: fossil fuel must stay in the ground and investments should target clean energy systems. (11/13)
These energy systems should be collectively decided on in order to answer the needs of communities in terms of energy supply but also of protection of local cultures & ecosystems rather than the interest of elites. (12/13)
Greedy corporations and governments must be held accountable for their criminal decisions, imposing a death sentence for future generations & ecosystems. (13/13)

Lützerath Unräumbar!

As a broad alliance we announce actions around the village of Lützerath, in Germany, because the coal under Lützerath must stay in the ground! We stand united behind the activists on site and fight side by side for climate justice worldwide.
Together we call for all activists to make their way to Lützerath to protect the village from eviction.

Every minute the excavator runs and coal is burned, the climate catastrophe continues to heat up. As the Lützerath Unräumbar alliance, we stand in the way of destruction!
We are groups from Fridays For Future to Last Generation to Alle Dörfer Bleiben. We call on everyone to become active with us for climate justice. Our name is program: with diverse actions of civil disobedience, we make Lützerath unräumbar.

A new paper shows that mature trees and woodlands are crucial in locking away carbon. Cutting edge laser scanning suggests previous estimates of carbon storage in woodlands could be significantly underestimated. (1/4) #CarbonCapture #Forests

Forests with older, larger trees appear to be especially effective at storing carbon. Scientists warn that "The value you have in large mature trees is almost incalculable, and so you should avoid losing that at any cost." (2/4) #ClimateChange #Trees
Politicians support the 'One Trillion Trees' campaign and advocate large scale planting programmes. However, new planting initiatives are of limited use in comparison to protecting existing forests. Monoculture planting can negatively impact biodiversity. (3/4) #SustainableForest

Meet our activists in Colombia! The collective
@ciencia_local is our sister group in Colombia.

In November 2022 they held actions in Bogota and Casanare, calling for the release of our activists imprisoned in Germany and denouncing the lies and deceit of politicians at #COP27. Image
Voice of Colombia: "Politicians have to accept that political power is useless in the face of the climate crisis, only if scientific criteria are taken into account in the decisions of the states, it is possible to improve the future of humanity".
More than 200 environmental activists were murdered in Colombia in 2022. A dramatic reality in the global south: The voices of activists are silenced by threats, persecution and death. But this situation does not stop climate activism, because the emergency transcends generations Image

Our own Wolfgang Metzeler is on his 16th day of hunger strike in prison. This is his open letter to Scientists for Future calling them to level with the public. He was put in preventive prison along with other 12 people from @AufstandLastGen .
#ScientistRebellion #LevelWithUs
His hunger strike when the German government either:

1. Recognizes we will miss the 1.5 ºC target;
2. Cancels all financial debt of most affected countries by the climate crisis;
3. Limit highway speed to 100 km/h and extend the 9€ ticket for public transport.
"I am convinced that it is inevitable to state that the world climate is completely out of control and that mankind, if they want to persist, must shift into reverse gear as soon as possible." #ClimateEmergency #LevelWithUs #DebtForClimate #DecarbonizeTransport
