Shortly after the Holy Synod of the the #Ethiopian#Orthodox Tewahedo #Church (EOTC) declared that it has cancelled its protest rally following its meeting with #AbiyAhmed, the government issued street closure statement essentially closing all streets leading to Sidist Kilo, 1/4
Meskel Square & Arat Kilo for vehicles & pedestrians for Sunday Feb 12, the day of cancelled rally. Specifically about Arat Kilo where Abiy Ahmed’s palace is, the statement read “It is forbidden to go to Arat Kilo from any direction.”
The government said the reason for 2/4
the streets closure including parking is the life size military drills to be held by its joint security
forces ahead of the upcoming #AfricanUnion General Assembly the capital is hosting soon. The duration of closure overlaps with the time of the Sunday Holy Mass of the #EOTC 3/4
to which the Holy Synod called upon all its faithful to attend in lieu of the cancelled rally. The vehicle & pedestrian traffic closure radius covers a large area where many of the prominent churches of the EOTC in the capital are located. (center Arat Kilo, top Sidist Kilo) 4/4

THREAD Meles Bisrat has been active for a long time as a very vocal opposition voice of #TPLF. He is from #Tigray from Mai Kadra. His mom still lives there according to one of his posts and he is a vocal and diehard supporter of #AbiyAhmed. He has been supporting the war. 1/6
The gravity of atrocities and cruelty is even pushing people like him to state the obvious, #TigrayGenocide. Here is my verbatim translation of his facebook post above from today. “A heinous act of cruelty history will not forgive is taking place in Mai Kadra.

This is my city where Tigraway (ethnic #Tigray) not only are getting killed but also deprived burial as bodies are condemned to be devoured by dogs and hyenas, a city where extreme abuses are committed as never seen in Ethiopia’s history. More than 60,000 people have been 3/6
A good starting material for those who care about accountability in #Ethiopia: where is the army?. Excerpts from Mulugeta Gebrehiwot's podcast discussion with @WorldPeaceFdtnsites.tufts.edu/reinventingpea…: "It's an effective destruction of Tigray but that’s not the only thing. 1/5
It’s also an effective destruction of Ethiopian defense forces. Ethiopia has remained without an army now. " "they[Eritrean forces] sent the commanders of the Eritrean forces, which they were just using [Ethiopian forces] as cannon fodders, you know, they send them[Ethiopian 2/5
forces] first, and then once they’re [Ethiopian army] finished, they start sending their army [Eritrean army]. So, Ethiopia is effectively without an army now. "
"And the Eritrean forces will remain here. They had a meeting last week, it’s some information we got from 3/5
I was only 23 when I met Dr. Mulugeta Gebrehiwot (nom de guerre Mulugeta Chaltu) in #Mekelle. I was young, ambitious, full of energy, first year after graduating from #AddisAbabaUniversity. I was talking to him on how I could help with the selection of wastewater treatment 1/5
plant technologies to be established as part of Sheba Tannery in #Wukro (now destroyed/looted by #Eritrean forces). He knew I was a novice. He still was glad to see me give it a shot. He handed me the tender document. I cherished it so much (and partly, I am a collector par 2/5
excellence) that it went with me to Bahir Dar, Addis Ababa, #Stockholm and now #Calgary. I still have it in my home office library here. I remember Chaltu as a very positive and encouraging gentleman. Fast forward 25 years, I am now at the foot of the Rocky Mountains of 3/5
