Shortly after the Holy Synod of the the #Ethiopian #Orthodox Tewahedo #Church (EOTC) declared that it has cancelled its protest rally following its meeting with #AbiyAhmed, the government issued street closure statement essentially closing all streets leading to Sidist Kilo, 1/4
Meskel Square & Arat Kilo for vehicles & pedestrians for Sunday Feb 12, the day of cancelled rally. Specifically about Arat Kilo where Abiy Ahmedโ€™s palace is, the statement read โ€œIt is forbidden to go to Arat Kilo from any direction.โ€
The government said the reason for 2/4
the streets closure including parking is the life size military drills to be held by its joint security
forces ahead of the upcoming #AfricanUnion General Assembly the capital is hosting soon. The duration of closure overlaps with the time of the Sunday Holy Mass of the #EOTC 3/4

Thread on #politics and #religion in #Ethiopia 1/14: The country is bracing for a new, nationwide, protest, with possible ensuing widespread violence on Sunday 12. Feb. This time ostensibly over #religion and control of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church #EOTC. #Oromo #Tigray
2/14: The conflict in #EOTC has deep roots, but flared up recently when a group of #Oromo clergy broke with the Church leadership and established a separate Synod, arguing that Oromo representation and culture had been marginalised throughout centuries.
3/14: #Oromo clergy protested that Afaan Oromo was not used in Church, leading to an alienation of the Church from its flock & the decrease of adherents, as well as clergy appointed to #Oromia โ€œdon't understand the language and the culture of the peopleโ€.

CEASEFIRE???
============
The negotiation with #AbiyAhmed's regime is a futile exercise, a total waste of time. 1/n
Although they haven't formally stated what they want from the negotiation,it is obvious from what their officials, their supporters,& soc media activists repeatedly say, that what they want is for TPLF surrender& disarm its army.Sbdy should wake them up from their delusion. 2/n
What the mediators expect is a ceasefire. But ceasfire can happen only if Abiy agrees to stop the war (i.e., if he can actually convince Isayyas to do so). Obviously, Abiy can't and won't. 3/n

1/: The worldยดs biggest ongoing armed conflict is not #Russia ยดs attack on #Ukraine, but #Ethiopia and #Eritreaยดs massive offensives on #Tigray. Reliable estimate is that up to 1 mil. troops are engaged in the war theater.
2/: The ongoing combined #Eritrea / #Ethiopia offensives on #Tigray use WW1 tactics of ordering massive human wave attacks on Tigray defense lines. The carnage is horrendous. Likely as many as 100.000 have been slaughtered over the last weeks.
3/: #Ethiopia & #Eritrea are continuously shelling & bombing #Tigray towns, indiscriminately killing droves of civilians. The perpetuation of #Warcrimes is standard operating procedure.

Prime Minister #AbiyAhmed is convening two urgent meetings of the countryโ€™s leadership for today, Sunday, Sept 18. According to a source who cited military and political leaders taking part in the meetings, the first meeting is with military leaders, 1/5
and a second one with political leaders including cabinet members. The agenda of the meetings is not clear. #US Special Envoy for the #Horn of #Africa @MikeHammerUSA who was originally scheduled to be in the region between Sept 4-15 is reportedly remains in the region. In a 2/5
recent presser by @StateDept, the Special Envoyโ€™s meetings in #AddisAbaba were listed with no mention of whether he met Abiy Ahmed or not. His #European counterpart @EUSR_Weber met Deputy PM #DemekeMekonnen after #Tigrayโ€™s widely lauded public statement on its readiness for 3/5

If some in the international community still harbor the illusion that #AbiyAhmed would respond affirmatively to GoTโ€™s call for a mutually agreed cessation of hostilities agreement once he secures โ€˜a position of strengthโ€™ in the disastrous campaign he did launch three weeks ago,
they definitely are in for disappointment for at least two reasons. For one, by not exerting enough pressure on these repeat offenders, they are allowing the regime and its Eritrean allies to shed more blood in pursuit of a genocidal goal. More importantly, a position of strength
is hard to come by if you are trying to defeat & annihilate the people of Tigray. The series of offensives #Abiy & #Isaias did launch has hit a brick wall. Their forces are in disarray in many fronts with tens of 1000s rendered out of action. So much for a position of strength!

Just because some Ethiopians don't appreciate people until it is too late #NoMore #AbiyAhmed๐Ÿ‘‘

Here are just some of the note-worthy works of @AbiyAhmedAli in the past 3 yrs

1/ Eritrea-Ethiopia peace deal!!!!
2/ Press freedom, even though it faced a lot of challenges with rising ethnic killings and civil war, it is still remarkable improvement which was unimaginable during the 27yrs of TPLF rule.
3/ Grand mega project completed in a short period of time. This marvelous building was hidden, neglected, and deteriorating because of hate towards the an ethnicity.

Some of projects finished in short time: Unity Park, Friendship Park, Entoto Park, Meskel Square, & so on

Why I #RejectTheJointInvestigation
THREAD

The joint investigation into human rights abuses in #Tigray that @UNHumanRights & @EthioHRC conducted is fraught with serious limitations; does not satisfy the minimum standards, and as such should be rejected.
Here is why: 1 /24
1. The involvement of a national body to investigate a situation, which is marked by gross violations of human rights & humanitarian norms; and committed in a politically polarized society as current #Ethiopia is unprecedented, including in @UNHumanRights 's experience 2/24
2. There was no good reason to involve the @EthioHRC in this endeavor. In fact, it was the sheer insistence of the #Ethiopian regime that forced the @UNHumanRights to accept the arrangement as a last resort. No other explanation is provided on z matter. This is suspicious. 3/24

I don't know much about #PresidentErdogan of Turkey's commitment to help out #AbiyAhmed's genocidal campaign against Tigray. We know #IsaiasAfewerki still thinks he can come to #Abiy's rescue &is sending more forces to #Afar& #WesternTigray. And more desperate moves, I guess.
But we know one thing for certain: there is little left #AbiyAhmed's regime is beyond the pale. No missiles, no drones from Turkey or otherwise; no peasant recruits, nor airborne units from Eritrea or Ethiopia are going to prevent his total defeat. Unilateral acceptance of
our conditions is the only way out of this quagmire he has landed the country in. The international community needs to get its acts together bring its pressure on the #twin-tyrants of the Horn of Africa and their gullible enablers wherever they are from.

#AbiyAhmed's war machine is,essentially, destroyed. What was little left of his regular army has been destroyed or in disarray in engagements in #Afar, NorthernWollo and #NorthernGondar yesterday&today. The last strongholds in Qobo& AdiArqay, Chawber have been broken. Period!
Quite simply, there is nothing that could stop our advance and #Abiy&his cronies know it. Sadly though, they are in a farcical recruiting drive. Ill trained/equipped peasants are being sent to Afar & Amhara as cannon fodders. We will continue to send them back home.
#Abiy is instigating a genocide of colossal proportions against our people&we won't stop@nothing to make sure he has no Kalanshikov left to kill a single child. We call on all Ethiopians to tell #Abiy&Co that they cannot lie their way out of the crisis Ethiopia is in. Enough!

A relative traveled from #Adwa to #Mekelle today. He told my family that many people are dying from starvation.

As banks don't work, people cannot withdraw their money and save their lives and those with some grain need to line up for up to two weeks to have it milled. 1/4
There're few mills running on diesel.

Some families are desperately trying to send food from #Mekelle and other parts with access to cash. However:
1. They're impoverished and without income themselves.
2. It costs 500 birr to transport a quintal, Ex, from #Mekelle to #Adwa
3. It is risky. Friends in #Mekelle know of confiscated money and food destined to needy families, particularly in areas manned by savage #Eritrean soldiers.

The situation is catastrophic.

#AbiyAhmed is killing my people in masses by denying humanitarian relief.

Thread: What do we know so far about the #war on #Tigray in #Ethiopia, which has been running for nearly 2 months now? In this thread I will sum up some of the key developments.
First, the so-called โ€œlaw and orderโ€ operation, which @PMAbiyAhmed declared completed one month ago, has not yet reached its basic objectives, and it is doubtful that it ever will. Hence, the war in #Tigray will continue indefinitely, or until a political settlement is reached.
#Tigrayan forces, under the command of the elected reg. gov. of #TPLF, are still waging an active resistance war. Over the last few days, Tigray forces seem to be on the offensive, challenging #ENDF military control of the main routes (Mekelle-Wukro-Adigrat; Mekelle-Alamata).

PEOPLE ARE DYING IN #TIGRAY: #HumanitarianReliefNow
A Thread

Itโ€™s almost 2 months since #WarOnTigray was waged. Since then, much of #Tigray has been under a complete blockade of all life supporting services, including medicine, food, & access to cash. 1/17
Itโ€™s also almost a month into an agreement for โ€˜unimpededโ€™ humanitarian access to #Tigray the #AbiyAhmed regime signed with the @UN. Yet, even a needs assessment is not conducted to date. 2/17

news.un.org/en/story/2020/โ€ฆ
In the meantime, people are actually dying of hunger in #Tigray. These past 2 days, I had calls with some people that made it to #Mekelle from Wukro, Edagahamus, Abi-Adi & Hagereselam and environs. The stories are similar and harrowing. Words cannot express the desperation. 3/17

#WarOnTigray #UNSC โ€˜s #R2P
A THREAD

The #WarOnTigray is into its 41 days now, with military engagements taking place every single day. Involving hundreds of thousands of forces and all kinds of weaponry, it qualifies as a major war the region has seen in decades. 1/16
Heavy involvement of #Eritrea in the conflict is now confirmed. There is also a strong indication that #UAE drones are in use. The #Sudan is already feeling the hit, as desperate #Tigrians, currently standing at 61,000, are trekking to its eastern villages for safety. 2/16
Uncharacteristic of modern conflict of this magnitude, however, war footages are rare. This has been deliberately effected by the regime. Not only did it render #Tigray off limits to the media and rights organs, it also deployed a systemic campaign of misinformation. 3/16

Today #Ethiopia is entering civil war territory as federal troops deploy to take on #Tigray (TPLF) forces after what Addis said was an attack by the northern region against a federal military base. This is a disaster for the region, for Africa, for the world. Thread -->
Many Ethiopians on all sides hoped it would never get to this, although it has been like watching a train crash in slow motion for months. At each step of the way it has been possible for each side to de-escalate but everyone has chosen to press ahead with hardline positions.
Great hopes awaited Ethiopia when prime minister #AbiyAhmed took office in 2018. He took credit for continuing the policy of releasing political prisoners, and forging a peace deal with #Eritrea, winning the #NobelPeacePrize @NobelPrize as a result.
