Oromia PP has lost touch with reality. Despicably corrupt officials have continued to weaken our country's social integrity with apparent impunity. They are cold-bloodedly overseeing the massacre of thousands of citizens across the region, which is largely tumultuous & perilous.
The cover-up of the Borana famine, which has starved over 800,000 people & killed 3.3 million cattle, while the regional politicians feasted on misappropriated public resources, shows how greed & ego animate the myopic & regressive politics of the region.
Their ill-fated attempts to dominate state institutions & commandeer the economy under the guise of following Oromo political interests, as well as forcefully reshaping the civil society structure, particularly in AA and Oromia, are pushing Ethiopia to the brink of civil war.

Can the Conscience of Ethiopia Be Silenced?

We, the people of #Ethiopia, along with other people of faith and conscience, cannot be silent. When freedom of religion and conscience are under attack, the soul of our beloved nation is at risk.

Can the conscience of Ethiopia be silenced?  It is up to all of us to preserve these freedoms. In fact, challenging the conscience of the people will easily backfire; instead, inciting its members to a deeper commitment to its faith and purposes. How will we respond? ImageImage
We Ethiopians are at the edge of a cliff. How the current conflict is resolved between the Government of Ethiopiaand the Orthodox Church, along with other like-minded Ethiopians, will make a crucial difference in whether we tumble over the edge of this cliff; or instead, ImageImage

Thread on #politics and #religion in #Ethiopia 1/14: The country is bracing for a new, nationwide, protest, with possible ensuing widespread violence on Sunday 12. Feb. This time ostensibly over #religion and control of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church #EOTC. #Oromo #Tigray
2/14: The conflict in #EOTC has deep roots, but flared up recently when a group of #Oromo clergy broke with the Church leadership and established a separate Synod, arguing that Oromo representation and culture had been marginalised throughout centuries.
3/14: #Oromo clergy protested that Afaan Oromo was not used in Church, leading to an alienation of the Church from its flock & the decrease of adherents, as well as clergy appointed to #Oromia “don't understand the language and the culture of the people”.

1/12: Analysing politics in #Ethiopia is to try to capture a moving target. Our scholarly approach and understanding have over decades been "blunted" by the incessant fundamental political events happening every so often: large scale conflicts, mass atrocities, revolutions, etc.
2/12: This constant stream of political shocks has become a “normal”, leading to a heedless state of mind and blunting our methodological and analytical approaches and frames in understanding long durée political evolvement in #Ethiopia.
3/12: The developments over the past few years, should however be a wake-up call for us all. Throughout a turbulent history, some core metaphors and narratives have underpinned and projected a notion of this enduring historically imposed or imagined community called #Ethiopia.

#Unheard #facts on #Tension within #EOTC
There is heightened tension b/n the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church (EOTC) led by the Patriarch and a splinter group from Oromia. Here r #facts you might need to consider before jumping to conclusions. 1/14 @althecat
The current tension can have 2 main sources/reasons. First, it can be a result of z ongoing political tension b/n Oromo and Amhara political elite. Second, it can be a manifestation of a growing tension within the Oromia Prosperity Party itself. 2/14 @Qnie_Addis
Tension has been building up between Oromo and Amhara political actors (both inside and outside the ruling party) following the recent signing of agreement between the Federal Government and #TPLF for cessation of hostilities. 3/14 @LaurenBinDC

The saddening details of the disruption of Bishotfu's Demera Celebration

#Thread #EOTC #Ethiopia
Friday 27th/2019: Members of Kidane Mihret Church in Bishoftu on their way to observe Demera procession, were halted in the city for more than 2 hours by provocateurs. Their outfits had the plain green, yellow, and red engraving which incited the incident.
The ministers and churchgoers attempted to go through gently to proceed with their walk and chanting. The provocateurs summoned the police and obstructed their way once again. The churchgoers attempted to clarify and argue however the police were reluctant to hear them out.
