🧵Mysore Maharaja on the role of 'Guru' in one's life & their Guru Bhakti towards Sringeri Guru Parampara.
(Heartening to read that our ErstwhileRulers set aside their time for #AtmaVidya inspite of having umpteen things to do,while we mere mortals forever appear to be busy!) 1/n
H. H. Sri Jayachamaraja Wadiyar Bahadur
(The below was written when HH was the Governor Of Madras)
I remember that while I was yet a novice in spiritual learning, I read #Sureswaracharya's "Manasollasa", the commentary on the #Dakshinamurti Stotra, and what impressed me was
2/n
a quotation found in it, which is contained in the Swetaswatara Upanishad :
यस्य देवे परा भक्तिः यथा..
This sloka has had a salutary effect on me so much that it has remained ever fresh in my mind. Its significance is that they who have as much reverence for the Guru as
3/n
for God, they attain the greatest good and they are the real Mahatmas. The scriptures say that the Guru is one who removes the darkness of ignorance in the Sishya and bestows illumination.
गुशब्दस्त्वन्धकारः स्यात् ..
This is the very essence of the Vedas. It is the Guru
4/n
who illumines the mind and acts as a proper guide. In this age of spiritual bankruptcy in which we live, it is such Mahatmas who alone guide the destinies of mankind, and show the way to salvation. The Guru takes us from the clutches of ignorance or "Avidya", interprets the
5/n
many problems of life, and teaches us what is real and what is not. From times eternal, man has identified himself with his body and is ignorant of his real self. With his attachment to the body, he experiences untold miseries in the chain of births and deaths which is a
6/n
continuous process. To be liberated and to cross the ocean of Samsara, the Guru has to be relied upon. He alone can dispel this Avidya, which acts as a deterrent in the path of the realisation of the Self. One has to meditate on the teachings of the Guru, and to cultivate
7/n
the power to differentiate what is unreal from the real Self. Thus, the Guru guides him to search within himself leaving out all external objects which are unreal and realise the Atman in him, which is a part of the Supreme Brahman.
With this realisation, the Guru inculcates
8/n
the Truth of "Tat Tvam Asi", wherein is the quintessence of all the Upanishads-that the Atma in us, is Brahman. This final realisation can come only through the grace of the Guru. In this, we have to win a struggle. The Guru will set us right. He is the physician who imparts
9/11
the great truths, like sugar-coated pills. This भिषक् cures the maladies of ignorance & gives us the health of salvation.
I am what I am today because of the blessings of my Guru. It is fortunate that since I became the #Governor of this great State, my Guru also has been
10/11
touring in this State, and this has enabled me to have his Darshan on several occasions. In the history of the Mysore Kingdom, my ancestors have all been Sishyas of the Sri Sringeri Math and have received the Blessings of the subsequent #Jagadguru#Shankaracharyas. #sanatandharma

Brahmasri Sri Virupaksha Sastrigal was appointed to complete the study of the Sastras (for the new Guru). Sri Virupaksha Sastrigal, who was famous in those days for his erudition in Nyaya and Vedanta, was astonished at the intellectual power of the Sri Guru. The study which

took others three years to complete was finished by the guru in one year. Greatly surprised, Sri Sastrigal used to share his gratification with those around him.
The extent of scholarship acquired by the guru could be measured by the commentary which he wrote on

Profound words of Scholar, Congress Leader Late Prof. Siddheshwar Prasad Ji:
"Unfortunately, the books on Indian philosophy, culture, history and literature, written by Indian and foreign writers, have miserably failed to underline the importance of the sound formulation,

the metaphysical and sociological foundation of the #Bharatiya#Samskṛti. This has led them to present it in a very distorted manner. Therefore, they have also failed to see its positive features.
There are weak points and there have been lapses also. After all why #Bharat

was almost always defeated at the hands of the foreign invaders? But how and why it not only still survives but is rejuvenated? Why the #Egyptian, the #Greek, the #Babylonian, the #Asyrian and some other ancient civilizations and cultures disappeared? The simple answer is,

Amongst the valued possessions and hallowed objects of worship in a devout Hindu's home, are the Salagramas, those pebble-like objects, smooth to the touch, 1/n
spheroid in shape, and black, red, or mixed in colour. That they are, for the most part, a hereditary possession of the family, handed down from generation to generation, is sufficient testimony to the veneration bestowed upon them by our ancients. Not to be bought or sold,

it is a prized gift or dana, and it is given as a valued gift in some places to the bridegrooms along with the bride. The #salagramasila is considered the embodiment of #Vishnu. Its mantra has Shri #Bhagvan for #Rishi or Drashta, and #Narayana as Devata or the object of

Generally people think that: Vishnu was already there & Brahma-Rudra arise later without having been in the beginning. By that, both of them are considered to be in the Jiva category.
we know that this idea is not based on firm foundation:

When Atri Maharishi

prays to the Supreme Cause, Jagatkarana, to bless him with a child, the Trimurthys together appear before him. Then what Atri Maharshi says about those three is as follows:

🧵Invaluable gem from the pen of #Jagadguru#SriSri Sacchidananda Shivabhinava NrisimhaBharati:
In the Siva-gita of the Padma Purana,it is said that Rama asked Siva: "How does immaculate knowledge about You, the Lord, arise in a man? O Hara,if you are gracious to Me, tell me

the means to it." On being asked thus, the Lord replied:
"Having become detached towards everything inclusive of the state of Brahma & disinclined towards everybody inclusive of one's sons and friends, possessed of faith in the scriptures dealing with liberation and desirous

of the knowledge revealed by the Upanishad-s, one should, with an offering in one's hand, approach a Guru who has realised Brahman."
"Being attentive, one should please one's Guru through services rendered for long. One should then listen with intense concentration to the
