Decades of neuroscience research on the ketogenic diet have shown that it:
- changes neurotransmitter systems
- decreases brain inflammation
- alters calcium channel regulation
- improves mitochondrial function
- increases mitochondrial biogenesis (1/13)
Obviously, this can have powerful healing effects for individuals with mental and neurological disorders. (2/13)
So if you start a ketogenic diet, how long until you see improvements? Well, just like medications, it doesn't generally work overnight. (3/13)
And the first few weeks can be really difficult. Symptoms can get worse before they get better! And that's why you need medical supervision for this powerful metabolic therapy for the brain! (4/13)
Once people get through adaptation, usually within two to four weeks they may begin to notice an antidepressant effect. (5/13)
People start noticing that they have more energy, their mood is improving, and they may lose weight - it's actually restoring brain function. (6/13)
Antipsychotic effects often appear at two to four months if you stay on the diet consistently. You can't cheat every weekend. That would be like taking medication and stopping it every weekend. And then wondering why you don't fee better 🤷(7/13)
If consistent (which is easier to do as your brain function improves, FYI), people will usually notice that hallucinations start to go away, quiet down, or are easier to ignore. (8/13)
In my own clinical practice, I see fewer "sticky thoughts." Thoughts we used to have to work to restructure every single session using #CBT and #DBT that just come back. (9/13)
We would restructure these sticky thoughts again and again. On a ketogenic diet, these often finally go away. (10/13)
So if you choose to do a ketogenic diet with the help of a knowledgeable clinician and a collaborative prescriber, give it a good 3 months of stellar consistency before you decide if it's the intervention for you or not. (11/13)
Brains take some time to heal, even under the best conditions! I am excited for you to learn all the ways you can feel better. And I hope you found this tweet helpful. (12/13)
On this podcast, you can listen to Chris Palmer, MD, discuss his clinical experience using ketogenic diets for serious mental illnesses! It echoes my own experience as a clinician and that of many others. (13/13)

I just want your brain to work well so you can feel amazing. I don't care if you use a ketogenic diet. And for those of you with long-Covid, you may benefit from HBOT treatment. 🧵(1/8)
"Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can improve cognitive function, psychiatric symptoms, pain, and fatigue in patients who have post–COVID-19 conditions. (2/8)
The beneficial effect of the therapy can be attributed to increased brain perfusion and neuroplasticity in regions associated with cognitive and emotional roles." (3/8)

Vitamin B6 is essential as an enzymatic cofactor in over 140 biochemical reactions, including transaminations and replacement reactions. (1/6)
Pyridoxine is the most common form of B6, which also helps reduce oxidative stress caused by Aβ, inhibits plasma levels of Aβ, and prevents grey matter atrophy in Alzheimer's Disease. (2/6)

Depakote, Tegretol, Lamictal, Neurontin,
Gabapentin, Valium, Klonopin, Xanax, Topamax, and Topiramate are often used to treat seizures. Did you know that a ketogenic diet can be used to treat seizures? Without the dependency or side effects of these medications? (1/4)
Seizure #medications are used as "treatments" for mental illness and neurological disorders. (2/4) #neurology #epilepsy #psychiatry
Did you know that you can use a #ketogenic diet to help treat seizures, mental illness, and neurological issues and possibly not need to use these medications? Did you know that was an option you could pursue? (3/4)

Mitochondria are essential to our overall health and well-being. In addition to producing energy, they regulate many critical processes in the body. (1/11) #mitochondria #energy #health
Mitochondria play a key role in the production and regulation of neurotransmitters. They also help produce key hormones like cortisol, estrogen, and testosterone. (2/11) #mitochondria #hormones #neurotransmitters #neurotwitter
Mitochondria are involved in epigenetics, which is the expression of #genes from the nucleus. They send signals to the nucleus that turn genes on or off. (3/11) #epigenetics #genes #mitochondria

Medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, can affect how microglia and astrocytes produce inflammatory molecules. 🧵 (1/19)
Interleukin 8, or IL-8, is a molecule that causes inflammation in the body. It is produced by immune cells in the brain called macrophages, microglia, and astrocytes. (2/19)
IL-8 can either help or hurt the body's response to inflammation, depending on how much is present. IL-8 is complicated. It can have neuroprotective or neurotoxic roles. (3/19)

I educate on ketogenic diets for mental illness & neurological disorders because I want you to know all the ways you (or a loved one) can feel better. 🧵(1/4)
Learning all the ways you can feel better helps you understand that you deserve better treatment options than you are currently being offered. (2/4)
Learning all the ways you can feel better means that you no longer feel like you have to suffer in silence because you are already receiving a standard of care that is not working well for you. (3/4)
