Just before the Tories announced their latest cruel barbaric Immigration Bill, & the Tories, tabloids, & right-wing "news" media once more stoked division & hatred, a 24 nation survey showed the UK has become one of the world’s most ACCEPTING places for foreign workers.
“It was unthinkable a decade ago that the UK would top any international league table for positive views of immigration” - Prof Bobby Duffy, director of the Policy Institute at King’s College London, who shared the survey findings.

theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/f…
“But that’s where we are now, with the UK the least likely, from a wide range of countries, to say we should place strict limits on immigration or prohibit it entirely.”

Many Tories & other extremists have moved seamlessly from demonising migration in general, to "illegals".
The UK ranked fourth out of 24 nations for the belief that immigrants have a 'very or quite good impact on the development of the country' – ahead of Norway, Spain, the US, & Sweden.
One factor in the shift in opinions on the question of “British jobs for British workers” may be that in 2009 the UK was in a deep recession, with high unemployment, whereas today the economy suffers from a worker shortage, with 1.1m vacancies - 300,000 more than pre-pandemic.
“Politicians often misread public opinion on immigration. In the 2000s, Labour government rhetoric & policy on this issue was more relaxed than public preferences, & arguably they paid the price – but the current government is falling into the reverse trap.” - Prof Duffy.
Despite Tory rhetoric, in February people in the UK were the LEAST likely of the 24 countries that participate in the World Values Survey study to think immigration increases unemployment, & second from top in thinking that immigrants fill important job vacancies.
UK voters are are very likely to say immigration boosts cultural diversity, & very unlikely to think immigration comes with crime & safety risks.

The World Values Survey asks the same questions in countries that account for almost half the world’s population.
“We have seen a shift that is quite remarkable in the UK” - 'the findings were in line with decreasing public concern about immigration since the Brexit referendum' - director of the migration observatory at Oxford University.

Hence the firing up of extreme "crisis" rhetoric.
“There is speculation it is about the fact that the end of freedom of movement has created a feeling the UK now has more control”, & there had also been positive media coverage about what migrant workers bring to the economy, especially given worker shortages in some industries.
“I think it potentially creates space for a less polarised debate about immigration. To the extent there is a consensus that immigration can be positive for the country & the question was how to manage it well, you can imagine that would be more a technocratic debate.”
Of course, this was before the entire right-wing media started amplifying the grotesque & dangerously irresponsible 1930s-style immigration rhetoric of Tory ideological extremists like Suella Braverman, Scott Benton, Mark Longhi, Jonathan Gullis, #30pLee, & the ERG.

The UK has joined Hungary, South Africa, & Poland, having been downgraded from ‘narrowed’ to ‘obstructed’, in a new report by the @CIVICUSMonitor, a global research collaboration that rates and tracks fundamental freedoms in 197 countries and territories.

According to the report, People Power Under Attack 2022, the government's introduction of a range of restrictive laws, particularly on protest, & the UK government's attempt to undermine human rights, led to the downgrade.

After a week of discussing @BBC impartiality, ANOTHER appearance from a representative of the opaquely funded ideologically extreme tax-hating #TuftonStreet lobbyists, the IEA.

There are more than 150 UK think tanks, yet the IEA is CONSTANTLY on the BBC.

#PoliticsLive Image
At least the @BBC say which organisation Reem Abrahim is from!

Blah blah blah, 'cut taxes', 'economic growth', 'red tape', 'deregulate', 'Brexit opportunities' - the same old failed mantra the anti-@BBC, anti-#NHS, & anti-Union IEA have pushed for decades. Here's a quote from me from this weekend's Sunday National:

'Scepticism or conspiracy? A discourse analysis of anti-lockdown comments to online newspaper articles'.

This paper addresses responses to news about the imposing of a local lockdown in a UK city.

tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.108…
Rejection of the grounds for taking action against covid comes alongside the devaluing of expertise, resistance to public health responses, a proliferation of conspiracy theories & misinformation and the harm that can be caused by focussing on non-adherence to covid measure.
The research asked how are arguments about the local lockdown discursively formulated in online discussions?

Analysis of online discussions following four newspaper articles identified six arguments used that range from scepticism to conspiratorial.

Given its #BudgetDay2023, it's important for voters to know that the #DWP has recently been ordered to release ‘sensitive’ research, commissioned in 2019, over concerns that sanctions have a NEGATIVE effect both on claimants’ health & finances.

theguardian.com/politics/2023/…
The internal DWP study was commissioned in 2019 after a cross party committee of MPs concluded that while there was NO evidence benefit sanctions incentivised people to get work, they did have a negative effect on claimants’ health & finances.
Benefit sanctions are in effect punishment fines whereby claimants’ benefits are docked for at least a month for supposed infringements, such as failing to search for jobs or missing a meeting with an employment coach.

Pleased to be quoted in this @ScotNational article, discussing Govt pressure on the @BBC, #bbcqt, #BBCBias, Richard Sharp, & the 'tabloidisation' of the BBC.

'BBC 'pro-establishment bias' shown in first six months of Laura Kuenssberg show'.

thenational.scot/news/23377081.…
"Dr Russell Jackson, a senior media lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, penned an open letter to the @BBC in February raising concerns about bias on #bbcqt's panels & from hosts, BBC management's links to the Tories, & a tendency towards platforming dangerous rhetoric."
"Jackson told The Sunday National that the -astonishing response to that letter [which has now been read more than 210,000 times] suggests that a hell of a lot of people are very concerned about what is happening with the broadcaster."

Ideological extremist Suella Braverman, who often uses dangerously irresponsible rhetoric reminiscent of the Nazis, has told MPs she "will not be hectored by out of touch lefties" with "accusations of bigotry" over her unlawful far-right immigration Bill.

"Accusations that this Government's policies... are bigoted, are xenophobic, are dog whistles to racists - it is irresponsible & frankly beneath the dignity of this place."

The Govt's Immigration Bill IS demonstrably bigoted, xenophobic, & an obvious dog whistle to racists.
"Yet, despite our reasonable concerns... I am subject to the most grotesque slurs for saying simple truths about the impact of unlimited & illegal immigration."

'Simple truths' like “There are 100 million people around the world" or even "BILLIONS" who "are coming here”?
