In the past 24hrs there's been excitement about #G7 headlines like this

But we need to talk about it 🧵

Past the headline the communiqué is rife with greenwash & inaction

🤔 These countries are still EXPANDING fossil fuels
⏰ No phaseout dates
🤯 There's a huge loophole
& more Image
🤔 These countries are still approving NEW fossil fuels

You're not phasing something out if you're still expanding it...

Despite the spin, G7 members continue to approve, subsidize & finance new fossil fuel projects.

We need a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.
⏰ No phaseout dates

It's not a plan without a timeline.

We need nations that are
a) historically responsible for emissions &
b) in the best position to fund a transition

to not only end proliferation of fossil fuels, but transition away from coal, oil & gas first & fastest.
👨‍⚖️ No focus on equity

These nations are responsible for a huge portion of historical emissions

🇺🇸 is the largest polluter ever, responsible for ~20% of ALL carbon emissions in history

They must support (& finance) a GLOBAL transition away from fossil fuels that is fast & fair.
🤯 There's a huge loophole

The G7 didn't agree to accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels...

They agreed to "accelerate the phase-out of UNABATED fossil fuels"

Unabated = a loophole to allow NEW fossil fuel projects, promising to clean them up with unproven CCS tech.
This loophole was used at #COP26 in Glasgow and #COP27 in Egypt.

The qualifier ‘unabated’ is a loophole big enough to drive a coal truck through.
🔥 the outcome explicitly allows for investment in fossil gas

The G7 has stated that “investment in the gas sector can be appropriate” as long as they’re “consistent with our climate objectives”

This is greenwash.

No new gas projects are compatible with our climate targets.
This outcome blatantly ignores the demands of the G7 Youth Forum which called for countries to support Pacific nations in developing a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

.@TIME has just named @petrogustavo one of 100 Most Influential People of 2023🇨🇴👏🏽

One of the reasons: the Colombian President's forward-thinking climate policy, which paves the way for building fossil fuel free future 🧵⬇️

@GabrielBoric 🇨🇱says of his Colombian counterpart:

“Gustavo dares to speak about complex issues [....] and the imperative to care for the environment in the context of a global climate crisis. He’s a leader who makes difficult decisions and learns fast.”

In Latin American, where the extractivist economy is the rule, @petrogustavo’s proposal to phase-out #FossilFuels is indeed against the tide.

Exactly. So why are false solutions such a big problem? And why don't we need them?

A thread in the context of today's newly published #IPCC report 🧵
In the face of an undeniably changing climate, the fossil fuel industry and other high-emissions industries, as well as the banks, financiers and other actors who prop them up, have had to invent new tactics. For decades, the tactic was simple: lie
The lies run deep + long. New research this year showed that #ExxonKnew. Their scientists predicted global warming with shocking accuracy yet repeatedly exaggerated climate science uncertainties. Read an important thread from report author @GeoffreySupran

.@antonioguterres at #IPCC #ClimateReport press conference sends another clear message :

"The climate time-bomb is ticking.

But today’s IPCC report is a how-to guide to defuse the climate time-bomb."

Here is how 👇🏼
@antonioguterres "1.5oC is achievable. But it takes real climate action on all fronts -- everything, everywhere, all at once.

Humanity should come first and every country and every sector must be part of the solution."

All month, the island nation of Vanuatu has been in a state of emergency as it rebuilds following a brutal 48-hours of two cyclones and an earthquake.

How this is devastating reminder that fossil-fueled climate impacts are here and now... A thread 🧵
bbc.com/news/world-asi…
Cyclones are among the most destructive extreme weather events &, on a warming planet, they're predicted to be more intense & costly due to

📈more storm surges
📈faster wind speeds
📈more rainfall
📈more flooding

A great fact sheet from @climatecouncil climatecouncil.org.au/resources/fact…
The loss and damage from climate change — whether it's these cyclones, flooding that engulfed parts of India and Bangladesh in May, or heat waves that gripped much of the United States and Europe last year - will only escalate with every fraction of warming.
