Bridgen is an irresponsible, bullshit-posting crank. Either he's a fucking idiot, or he's abusing other people's ignorance to fearmonger & spread hateful, divisive, #disinformation. (It could well be both).
This bollocks has been repeatedly debunked for half a century.
Bridgen's post is of a purportedly genuine document, which is typically claimed to have been discovered "in May 1919 at Dusseldorf, Germany, by allied forces" & first printed in the US in the Bartlesville, Oklahoma Examiner-Enterprise.
It's total bollocks.
When columnist Bob Greene checked out the "Communist Rules for Revolution" with leading Russian specialists in the mid-1980s, they said the list was (like Bridgen) "a total fraud," "an obvious fabrication," & "an implausible concoction of American fears & phobias."
When The New York Times ran an article on the "Communist Rules for Revolution" in 1970, it had already been circulating for about 25 years.
The NYT reported that neither the National Archives, the Library of Congress, nor university libraries had a copy of any such document.
Lee Metcalf checked with the FBI, CIA, & the Internal Security Subcommittee: "exhaustive research" proved the rules to be "completely spurious," adding "the extreme right also follows rules, one of which is to make maximum use of false, misleading, & fear-inspiring quotations."
many members of congress have received copies of the Communist "rules" list from alarmed constituents over the years &, believing that nobody else was yet aware of them, have inserted them into the Congressional Record. The fake list has also been reproduced in many newspapers.
The earliest known publication dates from 1946, which coincided with events such as Winston Churchill's famous "Iron Curtain" speech, in which he issued a warning to citizens of the US that "Communist parties constitute a growing challenge & peril to Christian civilization."
The timing & overwhelming evidence suggests it's far more likely this list was compiled by Americans in 1946 than by Russians in 1919.
Circulation of the fake list of 'Communist Rules for Revolution' really took off during the height of the Cold War in 1954.
1954 was the year when bullshitting Florida state attorney George A. Brautigam endorsed the document as genuine, & for many years afterward, printed versions of the list included Brautigam's statement of its authenticity & reproduced his signature at the bottom.
Even though the Soviet Union has long since ceased to be, & the number of Communist countries remaining in the world can be counted on the fingers of one hand, the list is still cited as evidence that the west is experiencing moral & political decay fostered by outside forces.
As folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand wrote of this piece back in 1986:
Andrew Bridgen is now a certifiable basket case conspiracy theorist, & imho, in need of a medical or psychological intervention. MPs are not supposed to spread obviously fake bullshit. So he'll probably end up as a GB "News" presenter.
At the end of 2018, there were 27,256 cases awaiting an initial asylum claim decision.
End of 2020: 77,245 cases.
End of 2021: 81,978 cases.
By the end of 2022, there were 132,182 cases (160,919 if we include family members applying with them).
WHY?
Some people argue that the REAL reason that so many asylum seekers are housed in the UK, & the backlog of asylum claims is so high, is because rather than reducing asylum costs, the @Conservatives DELIBERATELY MANUFACTURED A CRISIS to weaponise this issue as a POLITICAL STRATEGY.
CONTEXT:
Of the 132,182 main applicants awaiting an initial decision at the end of 2022, 67% (around 89,000) had waited for more than six months - hence the rising cost of housing asylum seekers (currently £6million/day).
(The approval rate for asylum claims was 76% in 2022).
#NHS data specialists have warned against the rollout of libertarian billionaire Peter Thiel's #Palantir’s software across the organisation, as the US tech company vies for a £480mn contract to build the UK health service’s operating system.
Palantir, led by chief executive Alex Karp and co-founded by Peter Thiel, the unhinged libertarian tech investor and prominent backer of Donald Trump, became the #NHS’s go-to data analytics provider during the pandemic.
Several data specialists familiar with its software, including three at the #NHS, told the FT they were concerned that #Palantir had become the frontrunner to win the British health service’s lucrative “federated data platform” contract due to be awarded later this year.
Rishi Sunak is being investigated by parliament’s commissioner for standards over a potential breach of rules relating to the declaration of interests, understood to be related to his links to a childcare firm in which his wife is an investor.
Sunak’s billionaire heiress wife is listed as a shareholder in Koru Kids, one of 6 private childcare providers likely to benefit from a pilot scheme proposed in last month’s budget to incentivise people to be childminders - £1,200 is offered to those who train through the agency.
On 28 March, Sunak did not mention his wife’s interest when speaking about the childcare changes before the liaison committee. He was asked by a @UKLabour MP whether he had anything to declare. “No, all my disclosures are declared in the normal way,” he told McKinnell.
From privacy concerns around consumer data to predatory pricing locking out small businesses to the flood of #disinformation on social media, people have become aware of how much market concentration the big four technology companies have achieved.
Big Tech companies like Apple, Amazon, Facebook, and Google have too much power and need to be reined in. Biden has made promoting competition and ending monopolies a cornerstone of his economic agenda, but he can only do so much facing Republican obstructionism in the House.
The tech companies, think tanks, advocates, and Koch network continue to fight these efforts. A far-right founder of the notoriously obstructionist House Freedom Caucus, Jim Jordan is now chair of the powerful Judiciary Committee which oversees antitrust policy.
Unlike #Britain, many countries have strict controls over foreign & overseas-based funding & ownership of news media to help protect their citizens from misinformation & manipulation.
In 2021, just three companies dominated 90% of the UK national newspaper market, & today’s digital giants are some of the most powerful corporations on earth. Investment firms like Legatum invest in news media like GB "News" to further their self-interest. mediareform.org.uk/key-issues/med…
Everyone should know that Cambridge Professor of History, Robert Tombs, is a shit-stirring Brextremist propagandist, famous for his entirely predictable contributions to Briefing For Brexit, the anti-woke History Reclaimed, & the occasional big fat lie. 🤥
I note Robert Tombs is also listed (along with outlier crank & Liz Truss's favourite economist, Patrick Minford) as a 'fellow' of the Brextremist 'Centre For Brexit Policy', Chaired by disgraced Tory Owen Patterson, & YET ANOTHER free-market 'think tank'!
